In a story headlined “Fearing Supreme Court Loss, New York Tries to Make Gun Case Vanish,” the city’s dilemma was spelled out. |

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr describes the gun control movement as his movement. He is quoted in an op-ed in the Hill saying, “My movement is the gun control and gun safety measures.” He then claimed that “over 90 percent of Americans want universal background checks,” a move which would criminalize a citizen for selling a 5-shot revolver to his lifelong neighbor, unless that neighbor receives government permission via a background check. |

In early 2018, while survivors of the deadly Parkland school shooting in Florida were leading a renewed push for gun control across the country, a counter-movement was brewing in Illinois. Officials in rural Effingham County, a few hours downstate from Chicago, were looking to protest a spate of proposed firearm restrictions being considered by state lawmakers, and came up with a provocative resolution: The county declared itself a “Second Amendment Sanctuary” and threatened not to enforce new laws it viewed as a violation of Americans’ gun rights. |

Early Saturday morning two men shot 10 people, five men and five women, in a drive-by outside a bar and liquor store in Trenton. Two days later, five people were wounded and one died in another shooting in the capitol city. By coincidence, Gov. Phil Murphy had a gun control roundtable scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Around the table sat urban mayors, legislators and gun control activists. The governor pledged state and federal assets to assist the city and bemoaned the lax laws in other states that allow a flood of handguns into New Jersey.

Twenty years after Columbine, the United States is still looking for how to stop mass public shootings. The rest of the world, where mass public shootings are actually much more common, is also looking for solutions. Russia, France, Finland, and Norway are among the European countries that have experienced far more deaths per capita from these attacks.

A controversial gun permit bill signed into law by Gov. Bill Lee last week has drawn criticism across the state, with some opponents saying it either makes it too easy to obtain a carry permit or not easy enough. The law, which will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2020, creates a new concealed handgun carry permit and redesignates the existing permit as an enhanced handgun carry permit, which allows residents to openly carry. There are 631,430 adult men and women ages 21 and older who now have state-issued permits that allow them to carry handguns either openly or concealed in public under the existing law.

The right side has Gen. Omar Bradley and Adm. Alan Kirk, and an Army crest is engraved on both stocks. |

A legislative committee endorsed a bill Tuesday to require background checks on all private firearm sales in Maine, whether they are made at a gun show or in response to a classified ad. But the committee’s divided vote raises questions about the bill’s fate in the full Legislature. Meanwhile, there is growing optimism at the State House about a bipartisan compromise on a controversial “red flag” bill that aims to keep guns out of the hands of individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others.
