What if I have no probable cause for a search warrant, but I don’t want to let the Fourth Amendment get in my way any more than the Second does in NYC? Why not just call in the tip myself, and enjoy a toll-free bypass around the Constitution?"

"Every year, many more extensive numbers are hurt by knifings, rapes, robberies, beatings, chokings, multi-assailant attacks and, of course, heartbreaking child abductions. All of these continue without guns on the part of the thug or the victim. For all of Helmke's efforts, he will never succeed in writing a law that stops handgun violence as his non-profit’s purpose, since many crimes are . . well, gunless, and because most gun homicides [roughly 32,000 out of 45,000 annually] are crime-on-crime. "At weekends in Switzerland, the quiet of the countryside is punctuated by the sound of gunfire. At first, this is surprising for the visitor who thinks of Switzerland as a nation of bankers and cuckoo clock makers, a pacific nation that managed to stay neutral through the two world wars that affected the rest of Europe. But the Swiss readily explain that the reason they have not been occupied by foreign armies is that every able-bodied Swiss male is trained as a citizen soldier and can at a moment's notice take to the mountains ... Every Swiss village and town has a local firing range and almost every household has a gun, as members of the militia keep their weapons and ammunition at home, as do most militia veterans." ... |

The Alabama House gave final approval Tuesday to a bill that would allow gun and ammunition dealers in Alabama to sell to residents of any state where gun sales are legal.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. David Grimes, R-Montgomery, was approved by the House on a 90-3 vote. With the regular session of the Legislature more than half over, the measure was only the fourth bill to receive final passage this session because of a dispute over rules that has stalled most action in the Senate.
The bill now goes to Gov. Bob Riley for his signature.
Grimes said the bill, which was supported by the National Rifle Association, would allow hunters from other states to buy weapons and ammunition in Alabama. |

A grand jury will hear charges against a Norfolk man charged in a shootout on Jamaica Avenue in March that left one person dead and two others injured, a judge ruled today.
Terry Privott is charged with malicious wounding, shooting into an occupied dwelling and use of a firearm. Privott's brother, Tremaine, was shot and killed by another man involved in the dispute.
A witness said the dispute started over a lawn chair. Terry Privott spit at a man who was at his neighbor's house in the Moton Circle public housing complex, then guns were drawn.
The man who shot Tremaine Privott has not been charged, police said, because he appeared to be acting in self-defense. [emphasis added] |
