Millions of Americans watched Philando Castile die in his car. The 32-year-old was driving in a Minneapolis suburb last July with his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and Dae'Anna, their four-year-old daughter, when they were pulled over for a broken taillight. Castile told the officer that he had a legally permitted firearm, but when he reached for his wallet, his girlfriend said, the officer panicked and opened fire. Demonstrating remarkable composure, Reynolds livestreamed the aftermath on Facebook, capturing Castile's final moments, as the cop screamed, "I told him not to reach for it! I told him to get his head up!" |

A firearms dealer isn’t completely off the hook after it sold a gun that later was used against a police officer, but it has avoided paying compensation to an injured police officer, the Indiana Supreme Court ruled on April 24. The case stems from a 2011 incident where Demetrious Martin, a felon who couldn’t legally purchase or own a firearm went into KS&E Sports with Tarus Blackburn. Martin and Blackburn looked at the firearm available for purchase, and Martin identified for Blackburn at Smith & Wesson handgun he liked. Later that same day, Blackburn returned to the store, alone, and purchased the gun Martin had identified for $325. |

The study, titled “Handgun Acquisitions in California After Two Mass Shootings,” appeared coincidentally on the day after the National Rifle Association’s convention in Atlanta drew a reported 81,836 people, the second-largest convention turnout in the association’s history. |

People deemed at “imminent risk” of killing themselves or injuring others could have their guns taken away under a bill the Oregon Senate passed Monday. Senate Bill 719, which goes to the House, was approved largely along party lines, 17-11. But 16 Democrats were joined in support by Republican Brian Boquist of Dallas, who lost his oldest son and Navy veteran to suicide more than a year ago — and three soldiers under his Army command to suicide after they returned from the Iraq War more than a decade ago.

For an M1911 enthusiast, happiness often comes 230 grains at a time, buzzing down the lane at 830 fps. and hell bent on perforating a freshly hung target. At times, there is nothing more satisfying than evaporating the small A-zone of an IPSC target with a trusty .45, and feeling the mechanical “chunk-chunk-chunk” of the slide as it feeds shot after shot without fail, just as its John Browning-designed kin have been doing for more than 100 years. |

A credit to Mr. Craffey and Mr. Moran in their recent Advocate op-ed, “Log Cabin Republicans: We Resist the #Resist March.” They got at least one fact right. They correctly noted that the June 12, 2016 Pulse shooting was the deadliest shooting in American history. Unfortunately, it’s all downhill from there. The writers seem more horrified about LGBTQ Americans peacefully assembling to exercise their First Amendment rights than they are about the epidemic of gun violence in our country. |
