Allyson, is a Verify viewer from North Richland Hills who is politically conservative. On this Verify Road Trip going to see what I see, ask her own questions and reach her own conclusion.

“I feel like people should have the right to own guns,” Allyson says, when we first meet.

But as mom with four little kids, the AR-15 scares her.

“We have all of these other avenues for hunting and for sport. So why does it have to be the AR-15?” Allyson wants to know.

A National Rifle Association-branded insurance program unlawfully provided liability coverage to gun owners in the event they were charged with a crime involving their firearms, according to New York state regulators.

Lockton Cos., which administered the insurance, and an affiliate were fined $7 million by New York’s Department of Financial Services and will no longer participate in the NRA’s “Carry Guard” program in the state of New York, the agency said in a statement Wednesday.

A 21-year-old Clearlake resident was shot and wounded Monday night after he allegedly banged on windows and tried to get inside an occupied mobile home in Clearlake.

A husband in the home told police he shot in self-defense at Mayfield Herbert Montes as he tried to enter the residence in the Southshore Mobile Home Park, 5725 Old Highway 53, according to a police press release issued Tuesday night.

...

The husband and his wife, who was also in the home during the shooting, suffered no injuries. Police didn’t name the couple and said both physical evidence and statements by other witnesses supported the husband’s claim of self-defense.

Parents, grandparents and others who have concealed carry permits would be able to bring their guns onto school and university campuses in a bill that won House approval here Wednesday.

House Bill 602 by Rep. Blake Miguez, R-Erath, was the first such bill to clear the House in the wake of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting.

Two other bills — one that would allow students to be armed and another that would allow armed teachers — were defeated.

Siwatu-Salama Ra is a young Detroit activist who was sentenced to two years in prison for brandishing a licensed and unloaded firearm in what she claims was an act of self-defense. Her conviction has raised questions about the nature of black gun ownership in the United States.

A 26-year-old, pregnant environmental activist is serving a two-year sentence at Michigan’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility right now.

But Siwatu-Salama Ra says she acted in self-defense when she pulled a gun on another woman last summer during an altercation outside her mother’s Detroit home.

Ra is a licensed gun owner, and she never fired a shot. Her supporters believe her case highlights a disparity in how the justice system treats black gun owners who use their weapons in self-defense — and question whether she would be behind bars if she was white.

Students at schools across the nation walked out of classrooms Wednesday to show their support for the Second Amendment.

The rallies, dubbed "Stand for the Second," were started by New Mexico high schooler Will Riley to show that not every young person is on board with the gun-control movement created after the Valentine's Day high school shooting in Florida.

This comes just over a month after students around the country staged walkouts to take a stance against gun violence.

Fox Valley students walked out of class Wednesday morning in support of Second Amendment rights, taking part in a nationwide effort that comes after months of student marches and walkouts.

About 200 students walked out of St. Charles North High School at 10 a.m., St. Charles School District 303 spokeswoman Carol Smith said. They gathered in the back of the high school, sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” and chanted, “U-S-A.” She said a student spoke about Second Amendment rights, saying they are a privilege in this country.

Students from nearly 300 schools across the country were expected to walk out in a different kind of protest Wednesday.

Rather than calling for gun control reforms, Wednesday’s efforts were meant to show support for the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms.

The planned “Stand For the Second” walkouts fell on the opposite side of the political spectrum from the March for Our Lives, the national walkouts that were held on March 14 in response to the deadly Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting a month prior.

Common-sense regulations such as a uniform background check administered by law enforcement — the people we depend on to protect us 24/7 — are needed. This would not be taking your guns away but it would be a step toward keeping them out of the hands of persons guilty of crimes and those found mentally unstable by the medical profession.

Please help me send Mike Boeck, a life-long, sensible gun owner, to Boise to represent everyone in District I.

From the time its creator sketched it on a napkin, the Ideal Conceal handgun has had a complicated birth. It's small enough to tuck into a pocket and folds up to look like a cellphone.

Critics slammed the idea because police have shot people holding cellphones and toy guns they mistook for real guns.

With the gun almost ready to be shipped to retailers, the derringer-style pistol will be a "featured product" this week at the annual National Rifle Association meeting in Dallas.

"The Cellphone Pistol offers a great option for self-defense along with max concealment. The shape will not print as a pistol, yet can be drawn and fired quickly," says a description on the NRA's website.

America’s oldest civil rights organization always opposes laws that violate civil rights. For doing so, the NRA has been denounced as a “terrorist organization” by Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy and other gun prohibitionists. Those are harsh words, but ones that resonate with many among the increasing number of Americans who get all their news from one-sided media.

They wonder: Who can be for “assault weapons”? Why can children who can’t buy a beer buy a rifle? Why shouldn’t there be background checks on all gun sales?

Gays Against Guns is a national nonprofit dedicated to promoting stronger regulation of firearms. GAGers, as they call themselves, take the position that “fewer guns equal fewer deaths,” and statistics largely bear that out.

A second group, called Pink Pistols, is an international LGBTQ nonprofit made up of people who meet monthly at firing ranges to support one another and advance their marksmanship skills. Pink Pistols members believe that the statistics are stacked against people who don’t own a gun. “Get a gun and give yourselves a fighting chance,” they say.

On a 33-8 vote, the Oklahoma Senate Wednesday night passed the controversial "constitutional carry" bill.

The Senate went into session Wednesday night and passed Senate Bill 1212, which would recognize the rights of law-abiding Oklahoma residents to carry a firearm for self defense without having to first obtain a government mandated license.

The bill would no longer require Oklahomans over the age of 21, who can legally own a gun, to get a permit before carrying a loaded handgun in public in some places.

...

The bill now heads to the governor's desk.

A new study shows gun homicides cost New Jersey more than $220 million a year in lost business opportunity, between 2010 and 2014. It also figures each additional homicide in a city causes an annual loss of between $293,000 and $732,000 because people are afraid to work evenings and at night. Those stunning statistics come from the Giffords Law Center, named for the Arizona congresswoman who was shot while meeting with constituents.

“And two things if you’re going to date one of my daughters?” Kemp asks the young man. “Respect,” Jake responds, and “a healthy appreciation for the Second Amendment, sir.”

Kemp then closes the gun, as if it was ready to fire, pointing it toward the teenager.

“We’re going to get along just fine,” Kemp says, as the young man grins anxiously.

To Kemp’s supporters, the campaign ad is a lighthearted portrayal of a protective, gun-wielding Southern father vetting a potential suitor for one of his daughters. But to many viewers, the ad for a Georgia gubernatorial candidate came across as intimidating and a particularly bad example of how to handle a shotgun safely.

A man who has been reported walking around in Philadelphia's northern suburbs with an assault rifle slung over his shoulder has a right to do so, police said.

The man may be attempting to draw officers into an encounter over his Second Amendment right to carry the weapon in public, Chief Patrick Molloy of Abington Township, Pa., said in a letter to township residents released Monday.

"All of our officers are well aware of this passive-aggressive tactic as they have been videotaped during at least one encounter with him," Molloy said.

In March, Collin Thorup was one of three students who stayed in his classroom while most of his peers from West Valley City’s Hunter High School walked out to show their support for gun-control legislation. On Wednesday morning, about 40 students joined Thorup in a demonstration of their own: Standing for the Second Amendment.

“I stated my opinions a few times and got a lot of hate,” Thorup, 16, told reporters from local media in an impromptu press conference held a few feet from Hunter High’s campus. (Journalists were not allowed to enter school grounds.)

A year ago, the nation's most powerful gun lobby was riding high: The millions the National Rifle Association had spent to help elect Donald Trump, one of the nation's most gun-friendly presidents, had paid off, and members were hopeful that more firearms restrictions would soon be eased.

Oh, how things have changed.

Broward County is leading the state in enforcement of the new gun restrictions Gov. Rick Scott signed into law in March.

The Red Flag gun law, passed March 5, was written to allow local law enforcement to confiscate weapons from those displaying emotional problems, or posing a direct danger to others. This made Florida one of the select-few states to have such a law.

British citizens stood by and watched the erosion of their personal liberties and allowed themselves to come to a place where the government is able to dictate what parents are allowed to do when seeking to better the well being of their child.

A record-high number of California voters support more restrictions on gun ownership compared to those who support protecting Second Amendment rights, according to a just-released Berkeley IGS Poll.

In addition, two out of three registered voters in the state endorse a national ban on assault weapons and six out of 10 oppose enabling school personnel to carry firearms into public schools.
