A local women’s-only conceal-to-carry gun course uses a real hands-on method to instill confidence in each student’s ability to handle confrontation, by keeping in mind a weapon is a the last resort. Dr. Lisa Orick-Martinez, communication studies professor and faculty advisor at Central New Mexico Community College, said she began instructing this course as a way to teach women the correct way to handle a weapon. “When I was younger, my older brother said, ‘You’ve got to have a handgun, you have to know how to shoot it, and you got to know how to protect yourself,’” Orick-Martinez said.

Lucy McBath is afraid many more people will die if Florida Gov. Rick Scott signs a bill making it harder to prosecute when people claim they commit violence in self-defense. She already lost her son, an unarmed black teenager, when a white man angry over loud music and claiming self-defense fired 10 times at an SUV filled with teenagers. The measure before Scott would effectively require a trial-before-a-trial whenever someone invokes self-defense, making prosecutors prove the suspect doesn’t deserve immunity. |

With titles like ‘G-Man’ and ‘Shooter,’ it’s apparent that Stephen Hunter is no stranger to guns.
In a world of seeming ignorance about everything guns, bestselling novelist Stephen Hunter stands out as a beacon of hope as he discusses the fact that there are now more voices than there have ever been. A fact that troubles many old school journalists, but breathes new hope into the “gun screwballedness” than ever before. |

Sojourn Community Church in Louisville, Kentucky, is urging members and Facebook fans to attend the June 2 gun control rally sponsored by Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety. The rally is designed to pressure Congress to pass more gun control, and especially to expand background checks so that private gun sales are treated like retail gun sales. Everytown has pushed for this expansion for years and has been joined by Gabby Giffords, who was shot and wounded by an attacker who passed a background check to acquire his gun. |

A bill to extend criminal background checks to all purchases of firearms was formally unveiled on Tuesday in Harrisburg. The measure introduced by state Rep. Jamie Santora, R-163 of Upper Darby, would add a paragraph to section 6111 of the state code, sale or transfer of firearms, to include a background check for the sale of all guns. Current state law requires a background check for the purchase of handguns with a barrel less than 15 inches. The bill will also offer a multi-day background check approval for use at lawful gun shows in the state. The bill was presented on the House floor May 18 and referred to the Judiciary Committee. |

Troublemakers in Houston probably thought they wouldn’t have a problem breaking into cars parked at a gun range after working hours. But two employees, who were staying at the range overnight because of recent burglaries in the area, had other ideas. After hearing the cars drive up around midnight, the employees grabbed a couple of guns and went outside to investigate. The armed workers saw several thugs scoping out cars and persuaded two of the suspects to give up and stand still. The others turned to flee, but once they got in their car one fired at the range employees, one of whom returned fire with an AR-15, striking one of the hooligans.

The Illinois House approved tougher penalties for second-time gun crimes late Monday. Chicago’s top cop claims it could help cut violence by 50 percent. Some African-American legislators argued longer prison sentences for two-time gun offenders would not reduce violence. They want more opportunity and jobs in black neighborhoods. “The problem isn't really the guns. The problem is the segregated the city of Chicago,” said Rep. Mary Flowers.

We don’t train the way we want to fight. When it comes to self-defense, there is always a trade-off between realism and safety. That balance is changing as technology goes up and prices come down to let civilians afford more realism in their self-defense training. For a long time we set aside realism as we made training safer. This affects even the new student who is working on basic skills. This may be true now, but it is changing for the better each day. |

Throughout our country and on little pieces of ground all around the world where Americans have fought, American flags are placed on the graves of those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Memorial Day, as is any day, an opportunity to thank a veteran. To look him or her in the eye, to shake their hands and thank them for their service. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd. — Alexis de Tocqueville |
