"When Saddam Hussein was rousted from his spider hole in Dawr, a town near Tikrit, by U.S. soldiers last December, Iraq's fallen dictator was clutching a pistol. He is now in detention at an undisclosed location, being questioned by American authorities and awaiting charges for war atrocities and crimes against humanity. But what ever happened to the pistol?"

"The sidearm has made its way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Sources say that the military had the pistol mounted after the soldiers seized it from Saddam and that it was then presented to the President privately by some of the troops who played a key role in ferreting out the old tyrant. ..." ...

On Sunday May 30th, 2004, the Libertarian Party in its National Convention nominated Michael Badnarik as its candidate for US President. Aaron Russo concedes that Michael Badnarik has won the nomination.

Aaron thanks all of his supporters and volunteers and urges all Libertarians to come together to support Michael Badnarik as the LP nominee.

The web site of the Badnarik campaign is Badnarik.org.
-------

Poster's Note: I don't know what to say. Badnarik is hands down the best when it comes to the gun issue. But I think Russo has the media experience, charisma, and savvy to get the party noticed.

"Conservative Party deputy leader Peter MacKay wants to scrap the costly federal gun registry system, and says the money spent to register firearms could go towards better police protection."

"'A sex offender registry would have a far greater impact of protecting communities, particularly children,' he said on the campaign trail in Nova Scotia Sunday."

"MacKay points to the registry's price tag, now in excess of $1 billion. 'The CPIC (Canadian Police Information Centre) system itself could have been upgraded. Twelve-thousand new police officers could have been hired.'"

"While the Liberal government has admitted that cost of launching the gun control registry was excessive, it maintains the program is an important element of public safety. In order to combat rising costs the Liberals have announced an annual funding cap of $25-million starting next year." ...

"Authorities have unearthed the bullet-ridden remains of 15 peasants murdered by soldiers after a lone survivor of the massacre came forward following 21 years of silence, officials said Saturday."

"The witness led a prosecutor and a forensic team to the bodies last month near the village of Totos, 198 miles (320 kilometers) southeast of the capital, Lima, chief forensic investigator Luis Castillejo told The Associated Press."

"He said the survivor, whose identity was withheld, told authorities he was one of 16 people brought to a nearby military post on May 28, 1983, for questioning amid reports that Maoist Shining Path rebels were in the area."

"The group was returning to Totos, 37 miles (60 kilometers) southwest of this provincial capital, when they were seized by soldiers."

"The witness escaped and watched from a hiding place as his companions were forced to dig their own graves before being gunned down, said Castillejo, adding that the witness kept quiet for 21 years, fearing reprisals if he talked."

"The bodies showed signs of torture before death."

Refusing to participate in non-violent marches that they considered unmanly and dishonorable, and in pursuit of issues such as voter registration, which they believed had little impact on their daily lives, men like Yates had seen enough, suffered enough, and had enough. "Massachusetts' gun laws and regulations are confusing, contradictory and full of legal loopholes squeezing licensed business owners. They also appear to be ineffective, as the state's gun violence has steadily risen since 1998, when it was heralded for passing the 'toughest' firearms laws in the country." [emphasis added]

Yet there remains a serious push by lawmakers and other elected officials to maintain the status quo, to uphold the current guidelines without addressing the effects those policies have had on crime, gun-related accidents, and the hundreds of mom-and-pop businesses that sell firearms. The issue alarms the state's legally licensed gun owners and dealers, whose numbers have dropped significantly during what they say is an 'assault on their constitutional rights.'" ...

The group, which calls itself the West Virginia Rifle Endowment Team, hopes to raise between $3 million and $4 million for the effort. The rifle club was formed after WVU’s rifle team, the most successful rifle program in NCAA history, was dropped by the university last April. The elimination of the rifle team, along with men’s tennis, indoor and outdoor track, and cross country, was a cost-cutting move.
