The .357 SIG cartridge was introduced in 1994, as a combination of efforts from the Swiss-German company SIG SAUER and the American munitions manufacturing company Federal Premium Ammunitions. With a rimless, bottlenecked case, the .357 SIG was made to mimic the velocity and stopping power of the .357 Magnum, but was designed to be fired from a semi-automatic pistol.
While the original bullet size was .357 inch, it was quickly phased down to .355 inch for ease of use. It was the first bottleneck commercial handgun cartridge since the early 1960s, with the standard form of the ammunition featuring a bullet weighing in at 125 grain (gr), the same average weight of a .357 Mag bullet.

On the last night of his life, Philando Castile, a Black man, was driving with his girlfriend and her young daughter when a police officer pulled him over in a suburb of St. Paul, Minn., in 2016. Castile complied with the cop’s orders and informed him that he was carrying a firearm. Within seconds, the officer shot Castile five times. His killing seemed primed for a textbook National Rifle Association diatribe — a cop’s lethal violation of a licensed citizen’s Second Amendment rights. Instead, NRA officials mostly stayed quiet.

Reacting swiftly to the mass shooting in San Jose by an apparent “disgruntled employee” who had legally purchased three guns allegedly used in the incident, President Joe Biden called on Congress to pass tougher gun control laws, even though it was immediately obvious California’s already-strict laws hadn’t prevented the carnage.
“Once again,” Biden said in a statement, “I urge Congress to take immediate action and heed the call of the American people, including the vast majority of gun owners, to help end this epidemic of gun violence in America. |

The pandemic somewhat quieted debates over guns, but Republican resistance to Democrats’ new firearm-regulation efforts has blossomed once more — even after a pair of high-profile mass shootings in Colorado this year that left 16 people dead. This week, Douglas County commissioners passed a resolution stating their opposition to SB 21-256, a proposal in the state legislature that would let local governments create stronger gun laws than those set out in state law. The commissioners affirmed in the resolution their support of citizens’ “rights to due process, to bear arms and to defend themselves from evil.” |

On Friday afternoon, the Texas Senate concurred with House amendments and gave final approval to two pro-Second Amendment bills strongly supported by NRA-ILA and prioritized by Lt. Governor Dan Patrick. Senate Bill 19, by Sen. Charles Schwertner (R-Georgetown), discourages banks, payment processors, insurers, and other financial services providers from discriminating against members of the firearm and ammunition industries. The legislation prohibits businesses that engage in this practice from contracting with governmental entities in the Lone Star State. Taxpayer dollars should not be used to benefit the bottom-line of corporations that are actively working to erode the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Texans. |

With just two more days left before their scheduled adjournment for the summer, Illinois lawmakers advanced a variety of measures Saturday on hot-button issues. But the fate of the biggest pieces of legislation remains up in the air. Lawmakers are still debating an energy package and ethics reforms. They also haven’t passed a state budget or addressed whether to allow an elected Chicago school board. That leaves those issues to be taken up — or not — in the final 48 hours of the spring legislative session. |

Bradford Knives is not the biggest name in the cutlery world but those in the know will tell you they build some beastly knives. Their G-Necker is a prime example. While most neck knives are thin and lightweight for back-up duty, this brute of a necker eschews the norm and comes loaded for bear. While most knives made to dangle around the neck typically have steel in the 0.10″ to 0.12″ range, Bradford’s G-Necker more than doubles the ante, showing up at the party with over twice the thickness. |

Being bitten by the at-home gun project bug is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, getting your fingers greasy assembling the gun you want is a truly a satisfying hobby. On the other hand, it's not uncommon for a build or modification to quickly grow into an excessively expensive proposition. But I recently discovered an easy and affordable do-it-yourself project while evaluating a Heritage Manufacturing, Inc. Rough Rider .22 LR six-shot revolver outfitted with a birdshead grip frame and a second .22 Mag. cylinder.
