The Mysterious Jacob Rifle

Some rifles are so obscure and so out of reach, they haunt you for a lifetime — the Jacob has haunted me for a lifetime. Lyman’s 1958 release of their Handbook of Cast Bullets started it all. There on page 52 was the picture of a short, stocky, rifled, percussion double rifle with a caption reading, “The Jacob’s rifle fired a four-ribbed, elongated bullet, either solid or hollow-point with an explosive charge, with astonishing accuracy. This is the type (invented by Brigadier General John Jacob) that Jacob used in blowing-up an ammunition wagon at a range of about 2,000 yards.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott pulled no punches in his reaction to demands by anti-gunners, including Democrat New York Sen. Charles Schumer, that Texas toughen its gun laws.

According to Fox News, Abbott was blunt.

“I know that people like to try to oversimplify this,” Abbott stated during a Wednesday press event. “Let’s talk about some real facts, and that is, there are ‘real’ gun laws in Chicago. There are ‘real’ gun laws in New York. There are ‘real’ gun laws in California.

President Biden faced a new round of backlash on Twitter for his comments on gun control legislation and 9mm ammo on Memorial Day. Speaking with reporters outside the White House, Biden told about his efforts to work on gun control legislation with Republicans in Congress following the deadly Uvalde school shooting. While Biden admitted that his executive options are limited, he suggested that 9mm bullets have no "rational basis" to be used for self-defense.

NBC Sports’ Peter King used his Memorial Day Football Morning in America column to criticize U.S. gun laws and to call for a ban on the sales of AR-15 rifles. King opened his column by taking time to “mourn those lost in service to our country.” Then he segued to the people who have been killed by the criminal use of guns in recent weeks.

How is it that we have some congressional Republicans who simply do not get it? Pile those sandbags high, fix bayonets, and wait for the word—that’s the protocol with these sorts of stories. I’m talking about the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas at Robb Elementary School. Nineteen kids were shot along with two teachers by Salvador Ramos. It’s sparked another wave of anti-gun activism and hysteria. It’s rehashed the Left’s same old talking points. The response is to dig in because there is no shredding of the Bill of Rights that should be on the action item list for Republicans. Not one step backward, guys. Any Republican who thinks the Second Amendment or the Bill of Rights is negotiable is not a friend. And yet, here we are again.

Quite possibly the most iconic cartridge in the United States, the .45 Colt was developed by gunmaker Samuel Colt as a black powder cartridge in 1872, for the Colt Single Action Army (aka the Peacemaker) revolver. This cartridge features a .454-inch bullet inside a rimmed, straight-walled case that measures 1.285 inches in length. Commonly called the .45 Long Colt (LC), the overall length of the round is 1.6 inches. It features a large pistol primer and is pressurized to 14,000 pounds per square inch (psi).

Deer harvests in New York State were down 17% this past hunting season compared to the previous year, according to a recent report by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The NYSDEC estimated hunters harvested about 211,269 deer during the 2021-2022 hunting seasons. The state agency points to a few factors that may have caused such a large dip, including the resurgence of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease in certain regions of the state and fewer Deer Management Permits allocated.

Like this year, May 25, 1977, kicked off Memorial Day weekend and crowds lined up for the most epic space western ever made, "Star Wars." Although set in "a galaxy far, far away," most of the blasters in the intergalactic blockbuster were based on very real firearms.

Gone are the days of putting up with spent hulls flying in front of the face of left-handed shooters or struggling with odd palm swells and backwards controls. Though several companies offered left-handed variants for many years, they were few and far between, often requiring special order. While this is far from a complete list, the following choices represent current-production southpaw-friendly shotguns that are readily accessible, including pumps, repeaters, single shots, and doubles.

Unfazed by the Second Amendment, Democrats Want To Ban Gun Purchases by Young Adults

The perpetrators of the recent mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas, both passed background checks when they bought the rifles they used in those attacks. That's because neither had a disqualifying criminal or psychiatric record, which is typically true of mass shooters. Given those facts, it was puzzling that politicians responded to the massacres by demanding an expanded federal background-check requirement for gun buyers.

The National Rifle Association on Monday announced that its board of directors had re-elected Wayne LaPierre as CEO and executive vice president, despite the organization being hit by financial woes and allegations over its spending. LaPierre had faced a challenge from Lt. Col. Allen West, but the organization said that West had ultimately only received one vote -- and that the vote was preceded by a resolution declaring support "past, present and future" for LaPierre.

Starting Wednesday, it will be illegal in Maryland to buy or sell so-called ghost guns, which are firearms that don't have serial numbers. The new legislation becomes law as the rise in ghost guns is becoming a growing problem for the D.C. region. A Fairmont Heights High School student was arrested Thursday and charged with bringing ghost gun parts to the school.

The dots are easy to connect, because they’re so close together, and because they’re the entry and exit wounds inflicted on US society by the subculture whose sacrament is the gun. Texas, while tightening restrictions on abortion, has steadily loosened them on guns. These weapons are symbols of a peculiar version of masculinity made up of unlimited freedom, power, domination, of a soldier identity in which every gunslinger is the commander and anyone is a potential target, in which fear drives belligerence, and the gun owners rights extend so far no one has the right to be safe from him. Right now it’s part of a white-supremacist war cult.

In the wake of the Robb Elementary School mass shooting, many are claiming that school shootings in the U.S. are widespread. Two organizations refute this claim, arguing they are exceedingly rare. “School shootings are so rare that in the United States in 2021 there was one school-shooting death for every twenty-three million Americans,” Ryan McMaken at the Mises Institute reports. “By comparison, approximately one in 350,000 Americans drown each year.”
