"Congress is moving steadily toward re-enactment of the USA Patriot Act, which gave the federal government extensive search and surveillance powers to fight terrorism."

"But there are a few surprises."

"An unlikely coalition of groups including civil libertarians and gun owners want changes, Republican senators are asking tough questions, and a former top legal adviser in the FBI told Knight Ridder that some of the Patriot Act's powers are too broadly defined."

"Scientists from Japan and the United States have figured out how to read a person's mind by remotely measuring brain activity, extracting information of which the subject is not even aware. Science fiction? No. It's real."

"So far it's pretty rudimentary stuff in that the mind-reading machine can only identify visual patterns a volunteer can see or has chosen to look at. But the researchers are hopeful that the approach will eventually probe into a person's awareness, focus of attention, memory, and movement intention, report New Scientist and Scientific American."

"Solving a single murder -- even if the murder could not have been solved by other means -- is surely a modest threshold for The Post's pronouncement that Maryland's ballistics database makes sense ["Bullet Proof," editorial, April 16]."

"By all means, let's continue with 'ballistics imaging' to link multiple shootings (e.g., the D.C. sniper case) or tie a recovered gun to a particular crime. But that's quite different from a database on all guns, or even all new guns. Among the obvious problems: A database is not reliable because ballistics markings change over time; markings can be easily altered; an effective database that covers resales, thefts and existing guns -- in short, the guns used by criminals -- would be too costly; and a database is equivalent to a registry, a slippery slope toward prohibition, which is the acknowledged goal of many anti-gun advocates."

"Even the Fraternal Order of Police has concluded that a ballistics database is unwise and unnecessary..."

"All of the facts are available to any journalist wanting to report the truth of what happened last week in the Tennessee legislature when House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh broke House rules in order to kill HB 0887, a gun-rights bill he opposes. The video of the April 27 and April 28 sessions are online, as are numerous facts about the case brought out by several enterprising bloggers and other citizens seeking the truth."

"So, then, WSMV's story last night on the controversy was in every way it could be a complete failure to commit responsible, honest journalism. ..."

"Just to be safe, police probably also ought to post signs warning panhandlers, substance abusers and any mentally ill residents given to angry outbursts that a new state law gives Floridians the right to use deadly force against anyone when they fear for their lives outside their homes, in their cars or businesses, or on the street."

"Back off, squeegee man. This ain't no foolin' around. The new Florida law, the first of its kind in the nation, expands the 'castle doctrine' ...to include one's car and one's body. It extends the right to 'stand your ground' and defend your castle to virtually any location where you might experience reasonable fear that a person's aggressive actions could lead to your injury or death."
