"Everyone who has legally acquired a handgun in New York state knows the law is already stringent. You cannot buy a handgun without first getting a permit from the state to possess one. Once you have taken the required course and passed a local background check to get the permit, you cannot simply go to a gun shop and walk out with a pistol. First, you must undergo another background check— the national instant criminal background check — or present a certificate to the gun dealer showing that you have already have done so. You have to show proof to the gun dealer that you possess a permit as well. Then you have to take a note from the gun dealer to the local permitting agency — in our case, the Sheriff’s Department — to have the gun you propose buying registered. Then you have to take a note back to the gun dealer as proof that the gun is legally registered. The dealer, meanwhile, has to keep records of all of this."
"Will those 1 percent of dealers who don’t do any of this record-keeping and paperwork when they put guns on the illegal market obey a new law that requires even more record-keeping?"
"Please." |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She well knows that by one enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. — JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1821) |
