Democrats are hoping to push through new restrictions on carrying and selling guns before the legislative session ends this week. One bill would ban people from buying a gun and selling it to someone else. Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Tom Mahoney said gang members often bought guns that way, with tragic outcomes. Democrats also pushed for tougher restrictions on carrying cases and manufacturing semi-automatic weapons.
Republicans uniformly opposed the measures in committee. They say the restrictions will limit the rights of people who want to buy and use gun legally. Nonetheless, the bills are on their way to the House floor. They'll still have to be approved by the Senate before going to the Governor's desk. |

FULL TEXT BELOW:
A Philadelphia police officer is facing murder charges in connection with a shooting Sunday evening in South Philadelphia.
26-year-old police officer Rudolph Gary was off-duty when police say he shot and killed his former brother-in-law, 22-year-old Howard Williams.
It happened on the 1800 block of Hoffman Street, when neighbors say Gary's girlfriend was shot with a water gun.
Witnesses say Gary then began arguing with Williams. They say he went to his truck, got his gun and shot Williams several times.
Two other people were also injured.
Gary has been suspended with intent to dismiss by the police department. And the district attorney's office has formally charged Gary with murder and other related offenses. |

"Thing is, and the reason this is an 'Only Ones' story: Good luck to anyone without connections in SoCal being 'permitted' to carry the most effective means of said persuasion."

"To The Editor: This is a response to Paula Bakule's letter of April 27. Unfortunately, it is indicative of a misunderstanding regarding the issue of the Second Amendment versus 'gun control.' Gun control would only take guns from law-abiding citizens, exposing us to more crime."
"Statistics show violent crime has decreased while gun ownership has increased. Guns aren't made to shoot people — people shoot people. Guns are enjoyed by sports enthusiasts, hunters and to protect ourselves and our homes against criminals."
"Every citizen has the right to protect himself against harm from others. There are those who want to steal from, assault or rape the vulnerable of society. ..." ... |

"Because one person made a mistake with a handgun in the West Park Hospital emergency room the hospital has now put up signs banning firearms in the hospital."
"This is basically the same type of situation the Brady anti-gun people use to try to disarm the public. WPH has no armed security personnel so the honest armed public is to their benefit should some nut cause a problem with a handgun."
