"'By the rude bridge that arched the flood, their flag to April's breeze unfurled, here once the embattled farmers stood, and fired the shot heard round the world.'"

"This shot in April 1775 is described in Ralph Waldo Emerson's 'Concord Hymn.'"

"Around 1933, I fired a shot that in every sense of the word determined my future. Here's what happened." ...

"That particular shot was not heard round the world, but it did light a flame in me that has never gone out. ..."

"Insignificant as it is, it started me on a lifetime venture of varmint hunting that led to gun writing, and today I share many of those experiences with varmint hunters across the nation and ... literally around the world." ...

"WHY DO PEOPLE FAIL TO PRESERVE LIBERTY?"

"WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE SUCH A DIFFICULT TIME RECOGNIZING ITS LOSS?"

"In response to these difficult questions regarding the loss of liberty, I have felt compelled to author this booklet. ..."

"The primal importance of this work lies in its fundamental premise: that there exists certain fundamental rights (life, liberty, ownership, and self-defense) that all men possess by virtue of their God-given standing as free-agents here on earth, which are superior to any government, constitution, or law which may be enacted by man to the contrary. While this idea is certainly not unique among the annals of jurisprudence, it has always been a rather nebulous idea ..." ...

"National voter turnout during mid-term elections is only about 35-40%. Voter turnout in presidential elections averages approximately 55%. And yet, voting is the easiest form of activism. A little research (made oh, so easy by the internet), a couple of phone calls, and show up to vote -- twice. Once for the Primary Election and once for the General Election."

"Compare that to the effort involved in fighting for your rights in Dianne Feinstein's district."

"Many people complain during the General Election that they just can't choose between two evils. Or that no candidate closely matches their values. And yet, the Primary Elections offer a variety of choices from a variety of parties. It is perhaps even more important than the General Election." ...

"There was a boy in my algebra class in 9th grade who I'll never forget. Everyday, he put a bullet on his desk. The teacher didn't know. One day, when my teacher wasn't there, some knuckleheads came to the class and were messing with the guy, making fun of him. He calmly pulled out a gun and started polishing it. There were about ten of us around. We were shocked and kinda scared. He told us that someone was out to get him and he was using it as protection."

"Three days later, security guards and a cop came to our class. ... They found two pistols on him - loaded, with two extra clips. ... " ...

"The guy who played with bullets in 9th grade is in juvenile hall now ... I'm sure he regrets having a gun at school, because in the end it didn't protect him at all."

Submitter's Note: Except from 'some knuckleheads', and anyone else who (like you) knew that he had the means to protect himself, and so didn't start anything.

"ABC News has obtained a chilling catalog of the concealed weapons collected by America's police officers as they walked their beats. Among the items the cops had to face down are shotguns disguised as a very popular flash light and 'Killer Kitty key chains.'" ...

"The entire array of weapons and other criminal paraphernalia is more than 90 pages long. It includes razor headbands, flare guns converted into .38 caliber pistols, cigarette pack guns and guns concealed in the handles of $1600 brief cases."

"Name recognition certainly counts for something in a competitive marketplace, but it can't make up for incompetent leadership. That's a business-school truism that Smith & Wesson learned the hard way in 1998, when the 154-year-old gun-maker was supplanted by the less-celebrated Sturm, Ruger and Co. Inc. as America's No. 1 handgun manufacturer. While Smith & Wesson's British owner, Tomkins plc., was making numerous strategic misstepssticking with steel, for example, rather than switching to lightweight polymersRuger sold boatloads of its .22-caliber revolvers to protective homeowners and security guards." ...

"It seems About.com has a 'News & Issues' section with page(s) having their own versions concerning our 'Civil Liberties'. A particularly interesting aspect about this is that they have references to the ACLU on the page(s). One of these pages is evidently devoted to their version of the Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights attached to the United States Constitution. And we all know what champions the American Civil Liberties Union is, (Communist liberties, perhaps), on the individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms." ...

"In June of 2003, I was lucky enough to attend the Glock Tactical Pistol Course ... For that school I used my Glock Model 23 in .40S&W, but I was surrounded by shooters using their 9mm Glocks. In fact, the instructional staff at Blackwater voiced the opinion that the Glock 9mm pistol was probably the best pistol to have in today's world. Why? Because the 9mm round is so prevalent worldwide and the Glock pistols are just so reliable."

"I've owned a Glock Model 19 (2nd generation) since the early 1990s. Recently I purchased a G19 3rd generation gun and enjoy it just as much. The cosmetic differences between the two ... are the addition of accessory rails under the barrel and finger grooves on the front of the grip. ..." ...

Charges were dropped for now, a legal term called nol prossed, against 19-year-old Corey Benton, according to 13News' partners at the Virginian Pilot, because it's not against the law to have an unloaded and secured gun on school property.

Officials at Lake Taylor High found the rifle when they searched his car. The investigation began, according to police, when security officers said Benton and another student smelled like marijuana.

"Having secured the right of most Minnesotans to carry firearms in public, gun-rights advocates began moving Thursday to expand the legal freedom to shoot in self-defense."

"A bill introduced in the Legislature by Republicans and backed by the National Rifle Association would allow the use of deadly force against an attacker anywhere citizens have a legal right to be, if they reasonably believe they face imminent danger of death or substantial bodily harm."

"The legislation would codify and extend court decisions that already authorize deadly force against an intruder in one's own home. It would eliminate a legal duty to retreat as a first line of self-defense and allow the use of 'superior force' ... 'so long as the individual's objective is defense.'" ...

"An editorial in the Monitor summarized deadly force as 'shoot to kill.' A letter called supporters 'shoot-'em-up lawmakers.'"

"While the use of a gun is certainly deadly force, this bill provides broader protection than that. A young girl using a softball bat to defend herself from an attacker, an elderly person using a tire iron on the side of the road or a wife using her martial-arts training could be considered deadly force."

A federal jury found a former Shelby police officer guilty on several firearms violations Thursday, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District Office of North Carolina.

Prosecutors say Michael Lee Drake operated two pawn shops in Shelby and knowingly provided an AK-47 rifle and ammunition to a person under indictment. Another firearm in Drake's possession had an obliterated serial number, which also violates federal law, the release stated.

A federal jury deliberated for more than an hour before finding Drake guilty on seven counts.

Observer archives show Drake was fired from the Shelby Police Department in 1992 after he was charged with selling alcohol to a minor while working at his off-duty job as a convenience store clerk. Drake is awaiting sentencing.
