"I’m generally pretty pleased with the results that Gallup comes up with. They do a fairly good job of asking accurate questions and properly analyzing the results, and as such I try to use their numbers if at all possible. So when Gallup released the above image, they no longer had just my interest — they had my undivided attention. The map comes from a recent survey of Americans asking them if they liked living in their current state, and if they would leave given the opportunity. The results were pretty clear: those states that scored highest on the Brady Campaign’s rankings of gun control fealty also scored the worst in terms of driving the people who live there to leave . . ." ... |

"The April 27 slaying in Montana of a German exchange student, whose funeral yesterday in Hamburg drew hundreds of people, has ignited a new battle over self-defense and the so-called 'castle doctrine' in the Big Sky Country, and a Missoula man stands charged with deliberate homicide in the case."
"The story has played out in the pages of the Missoulian and Ravalli Republic newspapers, and has become an international tragedy. The father of 17-year-old Diren Dede was in Missoula last week to take his son’s body home, and he was critical of America’s 'gun culture.'" ... |

"... [T]he more interesting (and consequential) decision issued today was the Court’s denial of review in Drake v. Jerejian ... In Drake, the lower federal courts upheld an outrageous New Jersey law that denies the right to bear arms outside the home for self-defense ... and today the Supreme Court let them get away with it."
"... Although the Supreme Court in Heller declared that the Second Amendment protects an individual constitutional right, lower federal courts with jurisdiction over states like Maryland and New York have been 'willfully confused' about the scope of that right, declining to protect it outside Heller’s particular facts (a complete ban on functional firearms in the home). ..." ... |

"My mom is 90 years old. The chances that I’ll take her to the range for some quality trigger time are about as good as the chances that I’ll take Erin Heatherton to Schmidt Family Barbecue for 1/4 pound of lean. Actually less. (The chances not the brisket. No one can eat less than 1/4 pound of Schmidt’s barbecue.) My Mom is an anti-gunner. “How’s your thing going?” is about as close as we get to discussing firearms. I’m glad that Kirsten’s Mom doesn’t share my mother’s antipathy to ballistic excellence. From what I’ve heard of Mrs. Weiss, she’s a wonderful woman who’s pleased as punch about her daughter’s vocation. ..." |

"Don Kates is a catalyst in the chemical reaction of criminology and Second Amendment constitutional law scholarship."
"More than most people, Kates efforts were responsible for the reconfirmation of that individual right by the United States Supreme Court."
"Kates is the intersection of a stereotypical college professor (which he is) and a rabid activist (which he might deny). Yet his intelligent perspective on the relationship between humans and government shows that the two are not mutually exclusive and that, in the area of arms, they are positively united." ... |

"My native state of New York is a beautiful place. I spent my summers in the Adirondack mountains during my high school years working as a counselor at a summer camp, and the beaches on Long Island are pretty nice too. But the politics and the politicians are ugly as sin. Not satisfied with their existing 'assault weapons' ban they decided to take it up to 11, mandating that any semi-automatic firearm with more than one 'evil' feature are now illegal. Black Rain Ordnance took that as a challenge, and has successfully neutered an AR-15 rifle to the point where it is still 100% legal for sale in the Empire State. They call it the BRO-PG5-NY. But the question is whether the result is still a usable rifle . . ." ... |

Charting every misstep in her endless campaign of civilian disarmament is fun, educational, politically important and, yes, profitable. "There’s a saying in the Second Amendment world: Outlaw guns, and only outlaws will have guns."
"It's a clever slogan, to be sure. But it only works if the gun rights community doesn’t diminish its credibility by undermining its professed role as a bunch of law-abiding citizens determined to use firearms only to protect themselves and their homes. Which means it might not be so good for public relations to threaten someone with murder if he chooses to sell a gun that has extra security attachments." ... |

The Senate's original vote on the bill, after all, was 46-2. Failure to obtain the 32 votes for the required 2/3 majority would thus mean that 15 senators would have to decide to submit to Governor Fallin's little temper tantrum."

"The U.S. Supreme Court this morning denied certiorari in a case challenging the arbitrary nature of New Jersey’s concealed carry permitting scheme, leaving gun rights activists fuming and convinced the high court is afraid to address the issue of carrying firearms outside the home for personal protection."
"The court does not give a reason for the denial, but this leaves a gaping hole in the Second Amendment’s affirmation and protection of the right to keep and bear arms, activists argue. It is the third time the high court has turned down an opportunity to review a concealed carry case, thus leaving open the question about how restrictive a state’s regulation on bearing arms can be." ... |

"The US Supreme Court on Monday declined to take up a case that many analysts believed might have delivered another landmark Second Amendment decision expanding gun rights in the United States."
"The court took the action in a one-line order without further comment. It affirms lower court decisions upholding a New Jersey gun permit statute that critics say is too restrictive."
"The question in the case was whether the New Jersey gun regulation violated a fundamental right to carry a firearm in public for self-defense."

"The recent Supreme Court gun rights decision is seen by analysts as a major loss for gun rights activists who argue that the Second Amendment of the Constitution, the right to keep and bear arms, supersedes any state or local law. On Monday, The [AP] explained that the Supreme Court let stand New Jersey's requirement that gun owners demonstrate a justifiable need in order to carry firearms in public, turning away another case over whether Americans have a constitutional right to be armed outside the home."
