"Anyone who wishes to debate how our basic rights should be limited or otherwise controlled should first read the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights ['Register that computer, you subversive!' April 24]."

"From there, read the Federalist Papers and the Anti-Federalist Papers."

"Only then will you begin to be able to rationally debate the rights, without doing so from a position of historical ignorance."

"The debates before the ratification of the Constitution and the many other writings of the Founders further clarify the thoughts and intents of those learned visionaries and will make critics' arguments issue from knowledge instead of inept conjecture and misinformed opinion."

"The best of arguments against the Second Amendment involve exaggerated statistics and illiberal interpretations made from positions of willful ignorance by those opposed to armed self-defense." ...

... "As any hunter or target shooter will tell you, accuracy is obviously important. Most hunters and shooters feel that a gun off the shelf has all the accuracy they need. Unfortunately, that is not necessarily the case."

"Rob Cantz is one of the gunsmiths at Williams Gunsight, and he told us a little about blueprinting the action of a bolt action firearm. 'Most of the time, when you buy a gun right off the shelf the accuracy is pretty good, but for the person who is shooting long range at small targets like varmints, most guns can't shoot four or five hundred yards.'"

"Blueprinting the action, primarily a new barrel job, will enhance your barrel to the extent that you will get those ranges as well." ...

"Of the cartridge repeating rifles used in the American Civil War the best known today is the colorful Henry with its yellow receiver. Total production of Henry rifles was tiny compared to quantity Spencer rifles and carbines purchased by the US Army. Total production of Henry rifles was only about 12,000 with sales to the Federal Government only about 2,000 rifles. Some states purchased Henry Rifles for their militias and other rifles were purchased by individual soldiers or their families. If a soldier had a Henry rifle the Army would issue him cartridges to use in his rifle. ... The Henry Rifle had another advantage that unlike a muzzle loader it could be rapidly loaded by a soldier crouched down behind something ..." ...

"Thursday evening Mike Dayem was in a battle for his life. A masked man entered Mike's Food Market on Cleveland's east-side with a gun and demanded money. When Mike's 19 year-old son, Abe, who also works at the store, gave the robber everything in the cash register, the robber said it wasn't enough and demanded more. Then the robber shot Abe in the head."

"That is when Mike grabbed his own gun and returned fire, striking the robber in the neck and chest. The robber fled from the store, leaving the money. Cleveland Police found the robber on the sidewalk about a block away. He was declared dead about 30 minutes later. Police and the Cuyahoga County Coroner's office are still trying to determine the robber's identity." ...

"It also will create an incentive for more violence in an already violent society."

"Current law allows people to use deadly force if someone is breaking into their home. Cornish ... would expand that to include their car or bicycle."

"In the first state to pass the so-called 'Stand Your Ground' law last year, it is expected to be a defense so far to three people: A tow truck driver who shot an unarmed man, a suspected gang member who shot another suspected gang member, and someone involved in a suspected felony drug deal."

"That's been Florida's experience with legislation some Minnesota legislators want to pass here. And Sarah Brady and local citizen activists are urging Minnesotans to fight it."

"'Let me be clear: People are dead because of this law elsewhere, and the people who killed them are using the law to try to get away with murder,' said Brady ... 'This law encourages the most aggressive people in society to act more aggressively than is necessary. ...'" ...

"Would you rather be shot or stabbed? It's the kind of morbid hypothetical you might hear kids discussing in the bunkhouse after lights out at summer camp. Now our federal government has weighed in. For reasons not entirely clear, the people in charge in Ottawa would rather you were stabbed than shot."

"The federal preference for stabbing is reflected in proposed changes to the Criminal Code. The governing Conservatives want a minimum, five-year sentence imposed on criminals who use guns. Criminals who use knives, however, would face no such minimum. It figures that criminals' choice of weaponry will come to reflect this federal preference for stabbing. It figures, too, that this will tilt the odds more in favour of Canadians being stabbed than shot." ...
