"What happens when tens of millions of non-gun owners and 80-million gun owners suddenly find themselves with something in common? In 2009, the gun owners and the non-gun owners are no longer disparate groups of the same country. I'm speaking of voting age adults. More than 100 million of them. What happens when the non-gun owner millions begin to experience precisely what the liberty purists have been predicting? Now it is here with banking scandals, taking of trillions of dollars, taking ownership and control of major industries, and on top of it, slamming fellow Americans for their political opinions of recognizing it all. ..." ...

"Wait a minute--they have the guns all neatly stored in a warehouse, inventoried, cataloged...if this is such a huge problem, we can't just get a printout? Mexican bureaucracy (if you buy into that being the real reason) won't allow it? So the easier solution is to adjust your and my rights accordingly?"

"Recent national polls by CNN, NBC News and the Wall Street Journal have revealed that support for new gun control measures is declining in the United States, despite efforts by the Obama administration and its media cheerleaders to demonize guns by sensationalizing recent shooting incidents, and the bloody drug war in northern Mexico."

"In April, CNN polling found that 46 percent of Americans say existing gun laws are adequate, and another 15 percent believe they ought to be relaxed, while only 39 percent of those responding want stricter gun laws."

"Also last month, an NBC News/WSJ poll revealed that support for restrictions on so-called 'assault weapons' had dropped from 75 percent in 1991 to 53 percent today ..." ...

"For those of us that hoped the Lesson of '94 was still on the minds of the Democrats, giving us some time before the next citizen disarmament attempt would be launched: we were wrong."

"Carolyn McCarthy just announced her campaign to close-the-(so-called)-gunshow-loophole."

"For those who have only heard the nightly news version, the real story on the gun show loophole is:"

"There is no 'gunshow loophole'"

"While it has become cliche to note that with great power comes great responsibility, there is a lot of truth to that statement. For new gun owners, there is a responsibility to learn how to use that firearm safely and to know the laws covering its use. The latter responsibility is a daunting one, as there are over 20,000 gun laws on the books in this country. So, what is a new gun owner to do?" ...

"With more workers getting laid off or forced into furloughs -- to say nothing of the stress from home over unpaid bills and rising health care -- it's no wonder that workplace violence is a growing concern of employers. Many are offering more counseling and at a minimum, they want workers to leave their guns at home. Too bad that in several states, that rule is against the law."

"Today, with the U.S. Capitol in the background, Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE) and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) kicked-off a campaign to pass The Gun Show Loophole Closing Act, legislation to require background checks on all firearm sales at gun shows. Every year there are thousands of gun shows across the country and [the ATF] has estimated that at least 25% of the gun-sellers at these events are unlicensed. Requiring background checks on all gun sales at gun shows, not just transactions with licensed dealers, will help ensure that firearms do not fall into the hands of criminals, terrorists or the mentally ill." ...
-------

KABA Note: If they really want to get rid of the 'loophole' (as opposed to shutting down gun shows), they should drop the price of a FFL to $5, remove criminal penalties for paperwork mistakes and let anyone who wants get one. Better yet, go back to the good old days, when you could plumk down your cash on the counter at the corner hardware store and walk out two minutes later with your new gun. No paperwork, no questions, no hassles.

"Nevada ranks fifth among states in gun-related deaths per capita, according to the Violence Policy Center, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C."

"The group said states at the top of the list have per capita gun death rates far exceeding the national rate of 10.3 per 100,000 population." ...

KABA Note: That might have something to do with the fact that Nevada's suicide rate with a firearm exceeds 10.3. And numerous studies have shown that suicide rates are unchanged by changes in gun availability.
