It must be nice walking through life believing that the paradise the founders built here in North America is the natural state of man, and that we can therefore forgo the difficult and dangerous tasks associated with defending it. But some of us don’t have the luxury of illusions. We know that peace and civilization are not the natural state of man, and that the black swan events that we have somehow convinced ourselves could never happen do happen with startling regularity. And this is why you should buy guns and ammunition.

In Alaska, guns have more rights than people do. A bill to tip the balance more toward people died in a legislative committee this spring.

But a new power has entered the gun debate: students. Some of the teens who helped mount protests and school walkouts over the last few months now are pondering a ballot initiative to keep guns out of the hands of people with psychological or emotional disturbances that make them a threat.

A recent poll by Ivan Moore Research showed 84 percent of Alaskans support using a process like domestic violence restraining orders to temporarily seize guns from family members in crisis. But Republican legislators killed a much more modest bill at the behest of the National Rifle Association.

The New Jersey Second Amendment Society is offering a free firearms safety and gun training day to interested students in the Lacey Township school district. The offer comes after two tumultuous Lacey Board of Education meeting where angry audience members slammed school administrators and board members over the apparent in-school suspension of two advanced placement students, who some say were punished because they posted photos of firearms taken at a gun range on a social media page.

Larry Lopata and some friends were sitting around the campfire on a hunting trip when they came up with an idea for a new firearms product: an adjustable-length trigger, so people with different sized hands can comfortably share the same gun. The four business partners put $150,000 into development until last December when they were ready to seek more funds from investors. Crowdfunding sites such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo would have been perfect, but they prohibit users from raising money for weapons projects.

About two dozen people - including two Republican candidates for governor - appeared outside Fallin's office in the Oklahoma Capitol and presented members of her staff with signed cards expressing support for the "constitutional carry" bill that is already in effect in a dozen other states.

Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs may be heading toward a change of heart on background-check waiting periods for the purchase of guns in her county, and on Tuesday the rest of the Orange County Commission will consider a new ordinance to require such checks. Jacobs has called for a public hearing on what will essentially be the proposed reinstatement of an ordinance the county repealed under her leadership in 2011. It’s a required three-day waiting period so that background checks can be made on people purchasing firearms in the county.

The settlement follows an investigation by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), which found that the NRA’s “Carry Guard” insurance program “unlawfully provided liability insurance to gun owners for acts of intentional wrongdoing,” the regulator said in a statement.

Inmates at California’s San Quentin State Prison may not have been debating gun control advocates when KPIX-TV interviewed them recently, but most said the guns they used to commit violent crimes were acquired illegally. In short, gun control didn’t stop them. Rahsaan Thomas — convicted of second-degree murder at the age of 29 — told the station he got his gun from the “back of a truck” for “600 bucks.”

When hearing or reading the word “guns,” many people still form a mental picture of men enjoying their Second Amendment rights. Guns are not just part of a boys club today, however. The number of women hunters, target shooters and gun owners has increased dramatically since the start of the new millennium. The National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms industry, says that 10 percent of hunters were women in 2001. That number increased to 19 percent in 2013 (the most recent statistics available).

Then there’s the mysterious virtual form that’s even sneakier when it comes to measurement. How can self-defense enthusiasts accurately compare light output? As some 70,000 people attended the NRA’s annual convention last week, nearly three months after the horrific school shooting in Parkland, Fla., the reignited national debate on guns seems to be at a stalemate. But the discussion lacks some basic facts about guns in the United States. For example, how many people in the United States own a firearm? As with most gun issues, the answer is hotly disputed. Perhaps just as important, what do Americans believe to be the percentage of their fellow citizens who own guns — and will that increase or decrease in the coming years?
