It must be nice walking through life believing that the paradise the founders built here in North America is the natural state of man, and that we can therefore forgo the difficult and dangerous tasks associated with defending it. But some of us don’t have the luxury of illusions. We know that peace and civilization are not the natural state of man, and that the black swan events that we have somehow convinced ourselves could never happen do happen with startling regularity. And this is why you should buy guns and ammunition. |

In Alaska, guns have more rights than people do. A bill to tip the balance more toward people died in a legislative committee this spring.
But a new power has entered the gun debate: students. Some of the teens who helped mount protests and school walkouts over the last few months now are pondering a ballot initiative to keep guns out of the hands of people with psychological or emotional disturbances that make them a threat.
A recent poll by Ivan Moore Research showed 84 percent of Alaskans support using a process like domestic violence restraining orders to temporarily seize guns from family members in crisis. But Republican legislators killed a much more modest bill at the behest of the National Rifle Association.

Larry Lopata and some friends were sitting around the campfire on a hunting trip when they came up with an idea for a new firearms product: an adjustable-length trigger, so people with different sized hands can comfortably share the same gun. The four business partners put $150,000 into development until last December when they were ready to seek more funds from investors. Crowdfunding sites such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo would have been perfect, but they prohibit users from raising money for weapons projects.

A small group of gun rights supporters rallied outside Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin's office Monday and urged her to sign legislation allowing adults to carry handguns without a permit amid growing opposition from some of the state's top law enforcement officials. About two dozen people - including two Republican candidates for governor - appeared outside Fallin's office in the Oklahoma Capitol and presented members of her staff with signed cards expressing support for the "constitutional carry" bill that is already in effect in a dozen other states. |

Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs may be heading toward a change of heart on background-check waiting periods for the purchase of guns in her county, and on Tuesday the rest of the Orange County Commission will consider a new ordinance to require such checks. Jacobs has called for a public hearing on what will essentially be the proposed reinstatement of an ordinance the county repealed under her leadership in 2011. It’s a required three-day waiting period so that background checks can be made on people purchasing firearms in the county. |

When hearing or reading the word “guns,” many people still form a mental picture of men enjoying their Second Amendment rights. Guns are not just part of a boys club today, however. The number of women hunters, target shooters and gun owners has increased dramatically since the start of the new millennium. The National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms industry, says that 10 percent of hunters were women in 2001. That number increased to 19 percent in 2013 (the most recent statistics available). |

As some 70,000 people attended the NRA’s annual convention last week, nearly three months after the horrific school shooting in Parkland, Fla., the reignited national debate on guns seems to be at a stalemate. But the discussion lacks some basic facts about guns in the United States. For example, how many people in the United States own a firearm? As with most gun issues, the answer is hotly disputed. Perhaps just as important, what do Americans believe to be the percentage of their fellow citizens who own guns — and will that increase or decrease in the coming years? |
