Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has signed legislation that would prohibit gun possession by people subject to a temporary restraining order. The bill, one of several signed in recent days, was celebrated by domestic violence groups who said it would help protect victims during a critical time – the days between when an order is filed and the parties appear in court. But gun right supporters said it was an overreach by the government and that guns would be taken away with no probable cause. |

Bang, bang, bang, bang. Inside the darkened Moore Theatre on May 23, veteran Seattle Police Department SWAT officer Jeff Geoghagan was taking out victims with a finger gun. Three more: bang, bang, bang. Geoghagan lowered his arm. "It happens pretty quick, doesn't it?" he asked the crowd in the auditorium. Before he started "shooting," Geoghagan asked the audience to time him. The seven shots took less than 30 seconds. The lesson: The cops won't make it in time to help you. |

Four people -- two adults and two juveniles -- were arrested in connection with the killing of a Richmond resident here last week, but none will face criminal charges. According to the deputy district attorney who reviewed the case, there were "issues with self-defense" that prevented the Contra Costa County District Attorney's office from bringing charges against any of the four arrested on suspicion of murdering 21-year-old Joseph Spencer. |

A few police agencies in the U.S. have begun rewarding officers for showing restraint in the line of duty, putting the tactic on par with bravery. More than 40 Philadelphia officers have received awards since December for defusing conflicts without shooting, clubbing or otherwise using maximum force against anyone. The Los Angeles Police Department recently created a Preservation of Life award. And later this year, the U.S. Justice Department's new Community Policing Awards will recognize officers who prevent tense situations from spinning out of control. |

On May 31, the New York Times ran an opinion column which suggested that now is the time to register every gun and fingerprint and photograph every gun owner. The author of the column — Alan Berlow — cited the National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA) as precedent for such sweeping controls and suggested the NRA and other Second Amendment proponents have no ready defense against registering, fingerprinting, and photographing gun owners. |

The state Senate worked past midnight Wednesday, after Sen. Marlon Kimpson began his attempt to block the advancement of a bill that lets South Carolina recognize Georgia’s concealed weapons permits. Kimpson, D-Charleston, was forced to start his filibuster against the bill when several attempts to end the day’s session late Tuesday failed. The bill ultimately cleared another hurdle, but senators voted to delay debate on the amendments to the third and final vote. |

Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones seems to be within his rights in issuing concealed weapons permits to law-abiding county residents essentially for the asking. But taxpayers shouldn’t be asked to foot the bill for his politically popular perk, and that’s what’s happening. State law dictates the amount that sheriffs can charge to issue concealed weapons permits, essentially $100, plus the cost of fingerprinting. The law also allows local officials to raise fees by no more than the Consumer Price Index. Sacramento County hasn’t done so, and at the very least, it should do that.

Kitsap Rifle and Revolver Club must obtain a permit under Kitsap County's shooting range ordinance to legally operate its range on Seabeck Highway, according to the latest court ruling in the ongoing legal battle. Judge Pro Tem Jay Roof of Kitsap County Superior Court rejected the club's contention that the ordinance — known as Kitsap County Code 10.25 — violates state law. "Despite the club's insistence to the contrary, KCC 10.25 is enforceable against KRRC's shooting range facility," states the ruling issued Tuesday, "and operation of the shooting facility without an operating permit is a violation of KCC 10.25." |

State Rep. Charles McBurney has felt the wrath of the National Rifle Association’s fiery email blast sent out last week, and he’s working overtime to put the kibosh on any opposition that might hinder his chances at becoming a circuit judge. The National Rifle Association criticized McBurney for his refusal to hear legislation which would have shifted the Burden of Proof in Stand Your Ground cases. McBurney, who served as the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, refused to take up the bill in his committee, a decision which the NRA did not take lightly. |
