"In August 2002, the Justice Department advised the White House that torturing al-Qaida terrorists in captivity abroad 'may be justified,' and that international laws against torture 'may be unconstitutional if applied to interrogations' conducted in President Bush's war on terrorism, according to a newly obtained memo."
If a government employee were to torture a suspect in captivity, 'he would be doing so in order to prevent further attacks on the United States by the al-Qaida terrorist network,' said the memo, from the Justice Department's office of legal counsel, written in response to a CIA request for legal guidance. It added that arguments centering on 'necessity and self-defense could provide justifications that would eliminate any criminal liability' later." -------
So how long before they determine that the Constitutional prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment doesn't apply to interrogations? |

"OPPOSITION Leader Basdeo Panday has called for every man in the country to have a gun to protect his rights, liberty and property since the Government has failed to do so."
"Speaking at the St Helena Hindu School at the UNC's Monday evening people's forum, Panday told the hundreds gathered that the PNM government had failed in its first and basic function of any government to protect the rights, liberty and property of its citizens."
"Panday said: 'If Manning and PNM cannot perform the first and basic function then they must pull up their pants and go home.'"
"Using the political theories of philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes, Jean Jacques Rousseau and John Locke to make his point, Panday said in a civilised society man had handed over the powers of self-defence to the government and so there was a social contract between the people and the State." -------
He is almost correct. Self-defense is a power that the people delegate to governments, but individuals still retain that right. |

"CAITLIN KELLY asks me if I have ever fired a gun. I regretfully answer 'no.' 'Regretfully' because of the rage I feel at being a statistic, among the three out of four women in this country who have been or will be victimized during their lifetime. But in many places, including New York City, we cannot legally arm ourselves for protection."
"In Blown Away, Kelly describes herself and the estimated 17 million American women who carry guns as 'transgressive and frightening.' A journalist and a four-time crime victim, Kelly found herself excited by the sense of power and freedom she experienced during a defensive weapons class at the Smith & Wesson Academy in Springfield, MA. She was also put at ease by the emphasis on safety measures and responsible care of firearms—points that instructors and gun owners make over and over in her book."
"Kelly's experience triggered a desire to explore how American women, usually portrayed as the vanguard of the antigun movement in this country, really feel. ..." ... |

... "I can tell you firsthand that the power of the gun lobby is more perception than reality. After all, there are 80 million gun owners in America; only 4 million are NRA members. And many of these join only to get the gun magazines or insurance. They believe in the Second Amendment but understand that an AK-47 isn't a hunting rifle."
"Even more interesting is the fact that the NRA doesn't speak for even its most diehard members. NRA leaders such as Wayne LaPierre and Kayne Robinson are pragmatists. Others, such as NRA board member and former Georgia congressman Bob Barr, are pure right-wing partisans who care more about electing Republicans than protecting gun rights."
"The tension between pragmatic NRA leaders and the minuscule number of diehard right-wing board members played itself out in the debate over the immunity bill. According to insiders, LaPierre was willing to accept a renewed assault weapons ban in exchange for passage of gun industry immunity. But when the far-right factions of the NRA found out, Wayne's world came crashing down. The NRA was forced to issue a statement denying any deal and ultimately had to oppose final passage of the immunity bill with the assault weapons ban and gun show amendments attached." ... |
