A police officer assigned to a county prosecutor's office in New Jersey has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter for allegedly shooting a man to death in Maryland in what police describe as an incident of road rage. Joseph Walker, 40, was being held on $1 million bond on the charges stemming from the shooting on Saturday night, Maryland State Police said. He lives in Eastampton, New Jersey, and works for the Hudson County, New Jersey, prosecutor's office. Walker is accused of killing Maryland resident Joseph Harvey Jr., 36, in a confrontation on the shoulder of Route 3 northbound near the intersection with Interstate 97, south of Baltimore, police said. |

Strobridge Elementary Principal Charles Hill has a brilliant idea: he’s holding a toy gun exchange next Saturday in which students of the Hayward, CA school can turn in a toy gun to receive a book and a raffle ticket to win one of four bicycles. Really. ... Hill, defending his take-away program, asserted that police are justifiably afraid when they face armed suspects, and toy guns have been mistaken for real ones. But Yih-Chau Chang, spokesman for Responsible Citizens of California, said, ”Having a group of children playing cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians is a normal part of growing up.” |

The U.S. government has given the embattled Afghan National Army (ANA) more than $1 billion in taxpayer-funded ammunition, according to the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction’s (SIGAR) latest oversight report. This is in addition to $288 million that has been spent on ammunition for the troubled Afghan National Police (ANP), which has been cited by SIGAR for its widespread corruption. ... The final accounting of U.S. ammo purchases in Afghanistan also comes as lawmakers on Capitol Hill hotly debate domestic ammunitions purchases at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other related agencies. |

Jim Shepherd challenged me by saying, "As the author of The Ultimate Man's Survival Guide (http://www.amazon.com/The-Ultimate-Mans-Survival-Guide/dp/1596988045/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1302664767&sr=8-1)-my favorite book on how to be a man-I'd like you to write an essay on what America's gun owners should be doing now to defend freedom." Then he told me about MyTime2Stand.com and his road trip for freedom.
I thought on all this a while and wondered when a person has a moral obligation to stand up. Even harder, in a civil society, what can a person do besides voting, joining gun-rights organizations and calling and writing their legislators? |

Why is it that millions will buy a software operating system with over 10,0o0 known bugs in it but bitch about the rattling of the transfer bar in a Ruger revolver or a minor scratch in a gun?
Somewhere along the way, having a cool looking gun took precedence over its gun fighting ability.
As far as I can remember, when my group of shooting buddies, competitors and gun club brothers, talked about grips, we discussed either how well they held your hand in place or their thickness. These days it seems that looking pretty is more important. You can see that when some take off recoil absorbing grips from a bruiser of a gun and replace them with polished wooden ones that look good. Read More…

Inhofe believes the Obama administration will do anything to push its gun control agenda and back in April, he told Laura Ingraham “We just denied everything that this president and the vice president are trying to do. So what are they going to do if they want to, if they want to violate our Second Amendment rights? Do it with ammo.”

Here is the key evidence that could support an acquittal.
1. No true eyewitness other than Zimmerman. The most significant evidence supporting the defense’s case is that the only living eyewitness to the entire incident is George Zimmerman. Ultimately, the burden of proof is on the prosecution to prove that Zimmerman was not acting in self-defense. Zimmerman, of course, says that his head was being pounded on the concrete and he had to shoot Trayvon Martin to save his own life. The prosecution will have to completely discredit Zimmerman’s version of the events without any eyewitness testimony supporting their petition. |

On Thursday, Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons announced that he won't be waiting on Quinn to take action on the issue. Effective immediately, people can begin carrying concealed weapons while in Madison County as long as they meet certain requirements.
Among the requirements is that the person must have been issued and possess a valid F.O.I.D card or, if they are not an Illinois resident, a valid concealed carry permit from a state that performs a background check prior to issuance of the permit. And they must be carrying the firearm for self-defense. |

As the Trayvon Martin trial gets underway in Florida, Memphis police are investigating several recent self-defense shootings.
Memphis police are investigating a weekend shooting that occurred on James Street in south Memphis.
Police say a man broke in and pointed a gun at the victim inside. He demanded cash, but the victim didn’t give it to him.
Instead, the man grabbed a gun, then shot and killed the suspect.
“This is human nature. People in any society are going to try to protect their families at any cost,” said Robert Flowers. |

The commissioners have other beefs, of course, including a few modest gun control laws that will stop no law-abiding citizens in Colorado from arming themselves for self-defense. And there is also the prospect — the prospect, mind you — of oil and gas legislation that might impact high-intensity drilling areas but which in fact failed this year.
Indeed, the commissioners' list of "injuries and usurpations," to adopt the ringing language of the Declaration of Independence (whose authors could in fact catalog an impressive list of offenses by the British king), is so thin and pallid compared to what one would expect from a genuine secessionist movement that we can't help wondering, Can these fellows even be serious? |

As country music played in the background, Jason Neusch, branch manager of Central Defense Security, examined the assault rifles in the Elite Sports Express Smith and Wesson display truck at Damron’s Jewelry, Guns and Pawn.
He already has a Smith and Wesson 9 mm, but he’s considering bringing an assault rifle into the fold.
“(President Barack Obama) is trying to take them away, and if he succeeds, we can’t buy them, and it would put people out of business,” Neusch said. |

And there will also be a couple of other issues on trial in Orlando, right along with Zimmerman:
The right of self-defense. The defense hasn't said for sure whether they will use Florida's controversial Stand Your Ground law as a defense, as Zimmerman waived his right to use the law for pre-trial immunity. The law could still be brought up during the trial.
Democrats in the Florida Legislature tried to change the law during the past session, but those attempts were defeated by the Republican majority.
In addition to Stand Your Ground, there surely will be plenty of debate over when and whether a person rightfully fears for his life, and what actions can legitimately be taken in self-defense. |

Police Sgt. Brandon Bonney said Monday that it didn't appear that the tenant - James Williams, 26 - knew Thomas and his son would be visiting or had enough time to secure the weapon before they arrived. No children lived in the house.
Bonney said Williams was asleep when Thomas sent him a text message to say he was coming over, but Williams didn't read it until authorities showed up to investigate the shooting.
...
Bonney said no charges were expected in the case, and that Williams kept the weapon for self-defense. He said Williams was in a back bedroom when Thomas and his son arrived, and the gun went off within a minute. |
