"It wasn't supposed to happen in England, with all its very strict gun control laws. And yet last week Derrick Bird shot and killed 12 people and wounded 11 others. A headline in The Times of London read: 'Toughest laws in the world could not stop Cumbria tragedy.'"
"Multiple victim public shootings were assumed to be an American thing for it is here the guns are, right? No, not at all. Contrary to public perception, Western Europe, where most countries have much tougher gun laws, has experienced many of the worst multiple victim public shootings. Particularly telling, all the multiple victim public shootings in Europe occurred where guns are banned. ..." ...

"The VPC's main function, as best I can determine, is to make the Brady Campaign look 'moderate' ...
"A Sugarmann opinion piece in the Salt Lake Tribune yesterday, about political rallies at which attendees legally, peaceably, and even 'politely,' bear unconcealed firearms, provides an excellent example."
"Are armed mobs becoming socially acceptable? Watching television coverage of gun owners eager to brandish their firearms in public spaces, that appears to be the desired goal of 'open-carry' advocates."

"As the American public increasingly turns away from the gun control agenda, the leading gun control group has been forced to sell its membership list to raise money."
"While NRA membership nears 4 million members, the flagship gun control group, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, has been revealed to have just over 50,000 members."
"The once-secret Brady Campaign membership numbers were discovered when gun rights activist and blogger Joe Huffman found that the Brady Campaign was selling its membership list for direct mail marketing."
"As Huffman points out, 50,000 members is far below the 'about half a million members' that Michael D. Barnes, then Brady president, claimed in a 2004 interview." ...

"But for its own bureaucratic incompetence, Massachusetts would have joined Maryland, New Jersey, California and Virginia in restricting gun buyers to one weapon per month. For what possible reason? To stop so-called 'straw purchases': legal buyers re-selling guns to people whose criminal past disqualifies them from buying a firearm. On the face of it, the limitation seems like a good idea. In practice, it doesn’t make one iota of difference to the flow of illegal guns to n'er-do-wells (and annoys more civic-minded citizens who like/need to buy guns). Case in point: centraljersey.com reports that the cops have nabbed a New Jersey gun runner purchasing weapons from . . . wait for it . . . Virginia . . ." ...

"America has a tradition of national gun ownership and use dating to the nation's origins. Yet the true nature of that tradition has been often romanticized, exaggerated, or distorted. Even though modern American culture includes groups that support gun traditions and use, only some Americans share these beliefs."
"Americans own about 270 million guns, nearly one for every person in the country ... Gun owners are found throughout the country, but are concentrated in rural areas and in the South. Long guns ... outnumber handguns by a ratio of 2-to-1. ... Nationwide, gun ownership has gradually declined: In the 1960s, about half of American homes had at least one gun; today, guns are found only in about one-third of homes." ...

"It may be of little historic relevance to many people, but the 2008 Supreme Court ruling in District of Columbia v. Dick Anthony Heller was issued on June 26, the closing day of the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn, popularly identified as 'Custer’s Last Stand.'" ...
"While the 2008 Heller ruling that defined the Second Amendment as protective of an individual civil right to keep and bear arms regardless of service in a militia was a devastating loss for gun prohibitionists, the impending Supreme Court ruling in another case – argued by the same attorney who represented Mr. Heller – could have far greater implications. The anticipated ruling could come, again, at about the same time history marks Custer's defeat." ...

"Wikipedia: 'Grendel is one of three antagonists, along with Grendel's mother and the dragon, in the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf (AD 700–1000). ... "People who practice situational awareness can often spot this planning process as it unfolds and then take appropriate steps to avoid the dangerous situation or prevent it from happening altogether. Because of this, situational awareness is one of the key building blocks of effective personal security — and when exercised by large numbers of people, it can also be an important facet of national security. Since situational awareness is so important, and because we discuss situational awareness so frequently in our analyses, we thought it would be helpful to discuss the subject in detail and provide a primer that can be used by people in all sorts of situations." ...

"A Government Accountability Office study quietly released Thursday has bolstered a Republican senator’s efforts to force Amtrak's rail service to accommodate gun toting riders or face shutdown, Raw Story has found."
[Submitter's Note: If by toting they mean packed unloaded and secured in checked baggage then yes, gun-toting customers will be allowed.]
"The GAO ruled Thursday that an amendment inserted into a transportation funding bill by Republican Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) was permanent law, erasing doubts that Amtrak would have to comply. The mandate would force Amtrak to reverse a longstanding rule banning passengers from bringing guns onto trains instituted after 9/11." ... -------
Submitter's Note: "Longstanding"? As opposed to the "short term policy" of allowing guns in checked luggage for the previous thirty years?!?.

"As Elena Kagan's nomination wends its way through the Senate, Republicans have been scouring her record for ways to paint her as a knee-jerk gun control fanatic. The NRA is expected to point their formidable weaponry in her direction, too."
"But I've obtained a Clinton-era document that appears to undercut this case. In it, Kagan, then in the White House counsel's office, aggressively argues against a Clinton administration effort to ban the importation of 'large capacity feeding ammunition devices' ..."
"The document ... s likely to be central to Dem efforts to undercut the conservative argument that she's an ideologue on gun control. It may irk gun control advocates, but it's unlikely to provoke real opposition from them." ... -------
Submitter's Note: Of course if you actually read the .pdf document in question you will see that Kagan's objection was not the principled objection of a supporter of the Second Amendment (or any other part of the Constitution), it was instead the simple fact that the ATF rule was not supported by the language of the law.

"Eating the meat of animals hunted using lead ammunition can be more dangerous for health than was previously thought, especially for children and people who consume large quantities. ..."
"A team of scientists from the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT), along with researchers from other British institutions and from the Spanish Research Institute on Cynegetic Resources (IREC in Spanish), has proven that the levels of lead in some game meat that has already been cooked exceed the maximum allowances set by the European Union, due to the presence of remains of ammunition." ... -------
KABA Note: Interestingly the authors fail to mention the study showing that people who regularly eat this "contaminated" meat have blood lead levels far below the threshold of concern.

... "A problem with the criminal justice system is that it brings criminals to justice, but only after the crime has occurred. And in Tennessee, before you can go forth armed for defense, you must first purchase permission from the state. This makes our streets Gun Free Zones for many the average Joe."
"In most surrounding states, citizens are allowed by law to carry a defensive firearm in their car, without first being required to get a permit from the state. Tennessee, on the other hand, puts the ordinary citizen in the same position as ante-bellum slaves, who were not allowed to carry a gun unless they first got written permission from their master. ..." ...

"According to news reports this week, two United Dairy Farmer's stores in Dayton (Wyoming Street and North Main Street ) were robbed within 24 hours. Apparently the thugs missed the little 'no guns' sign on the door UDF corporate put there to keep him out. The crook was certainly smart enough to seek out someplace where he knew his victims would not be armed and thus would be at his mercy." ...

Four Providence police officers and 20 other people have been indicted in a wide-ranging Rhode Island cocaine investigation.
Three of the officers had been arrested previously. A fourth, Detective Robert Enright, turned himself in Wednesday.
Enright was arraigned in Providence Superior Court on charges of harboring a criminal and conspiracy. He pleaded not guilty and was released.
State Police Supt. Brendan Doherty says the case shows that no one is above the law. He says it concludes a wiretap investigation that began last year.
The three other officers were arrested in March. They include a narcotics detective and a former police driver for Providence Mayor David Cicilline (sis-uh-LEE’-nee).

A Billerica gun case that rose to the state's highest court and reaffirmed gun owners' responsibilities is expected to be dropped by prosecutors today after a judge ruled Billerica police illegally searched a home to find an unsecured shotgun.

"Some readers may recall back in February I had contacted the ranger's office at the Buffalo National River to inquire how the park would enforce some of Arkansas's gun laws; specifically open carry while on a journey.
