Two congressional Democrats have reintroduced legislation to prohibit Americans convicted of misdemeanor hate crimes at the state and local level from purchasing or possessing guns, ahead of the anniversaries of the Pulse nightclub and Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church mass shootings. Under current federal law, a violent or threatening misdemeanor hate crime conviction doesn’t prohibit a citizen from buying or having a gun. Hate crime laws vary by state. In most, citizens convicted of misdemeanor hate crimes can still legally purchase guns.

Plans to use conservation wardens instead of state parks rangers to enforce laws in campgrounds and recreation areas run the risk of delays in handling disruptive people, the Legislature’s nonpartisan fiscal bureau says. The changes are already taking place in state parks and forests as part of a reorganization the Department of Natural Resources announced in November. The fiscal bureau analyzed the plans because they are included in Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed 2017-19 budget. |

We’ve lived with guns for several centuries. Despite those years of cultural and personal familiarity, some people talk about guns as if they had been invented yesterday. I’m going to try and shift the discussion about guns so we can hear this stale bigotry with fresh ears. More people die each year in car accidents than in gun accidents. How do these anti-gun arguments sound to you when we substitute word for word? This is the everyday bigotry directed against gun owners. These sentiments are both shocking and shockingly familiar. |

In 2015, Kansas renewed the constitutional right to lawfully carry a firearm for self-defense purposes, and soon it will extend to university campuses. I’m not a Republican, Democrat, conservative or liberal in this discussion, because it doesn’t matter. I’m an American citizen who believes we have the right to make our own choices. No matter your political views, we are all proud Americans who love our country. |

While sentencing Idahoan Logan John Urrizaga to 15 years in prison, Fifth District Judge Randy Stoker said he would have shot Urrizaga dead if he had broken into his house. Urrizaga’s sentencing stemmed from September 2016 charges of beating a victim with a baseball bat. KSL reports the sentence will “run concurrent to a November burglary charge” and will be served in Idaho’s “retained jurisdiction program.” |

Jordan Klepper may take on the posture of an “East Coast elitist” — his words — in his field pieces for The Daily Show. But as we learn in tonight’s hour-long special on Comedy Central, ironically titled Jordan Klepper Solves Guns, he actually grew up going on hunting trips with his grandfather in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was relatively early in his Daily Show correspondent tenure that Klepper broke through with a hilariously insightful field piece that aimed to debunk the “good guy with a gun” theory that became a prominent NRA talking point following the Sandy Hook massacre in December 2012. |

An active police investigation was compromised and a dozen handguns stolen from a home in Hamburg made their way to the streets of Paterson because borough police officers were denied overtime by Police Director Wayne Yahm. That is the conclusion reached in a May 22 letter from the Sussex County Prosecutor's Office to borough officials, which ordered Yahm not to be involved in any future decisions on whether officers in the department get overtime when working on active criminal investigations. |

Florida Governor Rick Scott signed amended current “stand your ground” legislation on Friday, making it easier for defendants in the state to successfully claim they were engaged in responsible self-defense when protecting themselves or others. In spite of opposition from gun-control advocacy groups and virtually all Democrats, the bill supporting the Second Amendment rights of Florida citizens has been gaining support as it worked its way through the legislature. On Friday Governor Scott signed the constitutionally sound bill into law. |

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission wants to enroll private landowners in the Open Fields and Waters Program. The program pays landowners for allowing walk-in hunting or fishing access on their properties. Last year, the commission enrolled more than 230,000 acres in the program. Game and Parks biologists will post boundary signs, and enrolled property locations are published annually in the Nebraska Public Access Atlas. Participating landowners also receive protection from liability under the Nebraska Recreation Liability Act. |
