But Carol Anderson’s new book, “The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America,” changed everything for me. This week on the podcast, Anderson and I talked about the real history of the Second Amendment and I realized we’ve been having the wrong debate.
The question isn’t what the Second Amendment protects, it’s who. From the very beginning, the Second Amendment was about protecting white Americans from Black people. The formation of local militias was to prevent slave uprisings, not government tyranny.
This discussion won’t offer any easy answers about what should be done about guns now. But it will at least give us a better sense of how we got to this point. |

Utah’s 29 sheriffs have signed onto a lengthy statement which promises to protect residents’ Second Amendment rights and warns Utah to be wary of federal legislation that could infringe on constitutional rights.
“Importantly, the Second Amendment of our divinely inspired constitution clearly states ... ‘the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed,’” reads the statement. “We hereby recognize a significant principle underlying the Second Amendment: the right to keep and bear arms is indispensable to the existence of a free people.” |

California governors, legislators and voters have been imposing additional restrictions on guns and ammunition, one atop another, for more than a half-century on the theory that they save lives.
California now has the nation’s most restrictive gun laws but gun owners contend that they violate the U.S. Constitution’s “right to bear arms,” and the issue could land in the Supreme Court after three decisions by one federal judge supporting that contention. |

NICS numbers for May broke the string of record setting National Instant background Check System (NICS) checks which started in August of 2019. The number of NICS checks broke records for each month starting August of 2019 until May of this year, 2021, for 21 months of record gun sales!
Such a string could not continue forever. There are only so many resources, so many people to buy guns and be checked for carry permits. It has been the carry permits and permit rechecks that have driven the NICS system checks so high.
In May of 2021, only 41.3 percent of background checks were for firearm sales. 58.8% of the checks were for permits and permit rechecks. |

Three young adults have filed a federal lawsuit alleging Minnesota’s minimum age of 21 to carry a gun is unconstitutional.
Kristin Worth, Austin Dye and Axel Anderson filed the action on Monday. Three gun groups — the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, Second Amendment Foundation and the Firearms Policy Coalition — joined them on the complaint.
They argue that minimum carry age of 21 is discriminatory since anyone at least 18 years old is considered an adult for most purposes. |

FPC and our counsel presented the Court with the largest record ever compiled in any challenge to a ban on so-called “assault weapons,” including many expert witnesses testifying on a wide variety of relevant matters ranging from U.S. history, constitutional law, and firearms history and technology, to self-defense and use of force and the unorganized militia. In doing so, FPC prevailed against the State following a trial. |

By now you’ve heard that a federal judge nuked what should have never been, California’s “assault weapon” ban. Did you also hear about the “award-winning” guntard blathering on about how the 2nd Amendment is now suddenly “racist”? The news I really didn’t see coming was Country Music Television (CMT) caving to the wokesters and asking its viewers to wear orange in honor of “Gun Violence Awareness Day.” Do they not know who their crowd is? That’s like going to a prison and asking the inmates to wear pink ribbons in honor of “No Shiv November.” |

Mike Taylor owns San Antonio Concealed Handgun. He teaches classes for license to carry. He worried about those who may carry a weapon without proper training and vetting.
"License to carry in Texas, you have to take a class, learn about the laws, regulations, but most importantly, you need to qualify and show that you can operate a handgun safely and be accurate," he said.
"And that's where the problem is with constitutional carry," he explained. "There's no vetting whatsoever. None at all."
Taylor said courses like his are not designed to specifically train people to shoot a weapon. Some knowledge of shooting is required before customers start the class. |

Macomb County is taking a strong stance on guns as the board of commissioners voted to make it a Second Amendment Sanctuary county.
Under the resolution, a Macomb County sheriff or deputy would not have to follow the law and arrest someone if they openly carried a gun in places like schools.
The resolution passed early June and allows the county prosecutor and sheriff to ignore laws if they felt they violated the Second Amendment. |

California’s attorney general has filed an appeal challenging a judge’s decision to strike down California’s assault weapons ban, calling last week’s ruling “unconstitutional.”
In his decision to overturn the decades-old ban, U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez described the AR-15 rifle as “good for both home and battle.”
“Like the Swiss Army Knife, the popular AR-15 rifle is a perfect combination of home defense weapon and homeland defense equipment,” Benitez wrote in his opinion last Friday. |

In three weeks, permit less carry goes into effect in Tennessee.
And is it impacting gun sales? The folks at Royal Range in Nashville say they’re not seeing much of an impact on sales due to the Permitless carry law. But, the gun range store says recently they’ve seen a new trend with women.
“So far not a giant impact,” Bob Allen, the Director of Training at Royal Range said. “We’re kind of steady, maybe just a little bit above right now. And really about the same with ammo,” Allen said. |

After a long winter and a rainy spring, it’s finally feeling like summer, which means it’s time to get out to the gun range. While many of you readers may have been to the range before, a lot of you haven’t or perhaps it’s been a while since you’ve gone. Today, I’ll walk you through what it’s like to go to the range.
The first step to hitting the range is to pack. I like to use a small duffel bag as my range bag but there are many types of bags that work well. The essential things to pack are guns, ammunition, ear protection, and eye protection. Some other useful things to pack are a magazine loader, first aid kit, cleaning kit, extra set of clothes, and a training log. |

Since Ermiya Fanaeian re-launched the Salt Lake City-based chapter of Pink Pistols in July 2020, an LGBTQ gun rights group, the response from local residents has been "incredible."
"Folks are reaching out to us every day wanting to join — we're getting new members on a weekly basis. It's so exciting to see how many folks are engaging with what we're organizing for them," says Fanaeian.
Reasons for joining this inclusive gun group are varied, with some people seeking a welcoming community and others simply wanting to take up a new hobby. But, according to Fanaeian, there's one unifying motive that brings new members into the fold. |
