A pair of Illinois lawmakers have introduced national licensing and registration legislation that, according to rights activists, clearly illustrates how anti-gunners view the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms as a government-regulated privilege.
Congressman Bobby Rush – known for being escorted out of the House Chambers a few years ago for wearing a hoodie – and U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, both Democrats, last week introduced the “Blair Holt Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2018.” Holt was a teen gunned down in Chicago several years ago while trying to protect a friend from a shooting on a transit bus. |

A Wyoming Game and Fish investigation into the May 31 shooting of a grizzly female who charged a dog and then faced a group of hikers determined it to be “self-defense.” Pinedale Regional Supervisor John Lund said the grizzly sow’s killing was justified under the circumstances. The incident occurred in the Boulder Basin area while four people were walking on a hillside with a dog that startled the female. They were not on a trail or road and not close to any buildings, he added. |

An Illinois circuit court judge on Tuesday blocked enactment of a ban on so-called “assault weapons” in the Chicago suburb of Deerfield, Illinois literally hours before the ban was to take effect.
The Second Amendment Foundation, Illinois State Rifle Association and a private citizen named Daniel Easterday had filed suit against the town immediately after the council there had adopted the ban ordinance two months ago. Other gun rights groups also sued to block the ban. |

The only amendment in the Bill of Rights that literally includes the word "regulated" within its very text is the Second. Yet strangely, the NRA and other gun extremists think the right to bear arms is the only one among the Bill of Rights, adopted in 1791, that should be totally un-regulated. A fellow journalist whose work I admire recently educated me about 18th-century usage of the word "regulated." According to him, the words "well regulated" in the Second Amendment are a reference to supply. In that context, he explained, the Framers were saying that militias should be “well supplied” with guns and ammunition.

A rash of firearm thefts from unlocked vehicles and garages has at least one Sioux Falls official toying with the idea of establishing penalties for the victims. Sioux Falls police this week alerted media that four handguns had been stolen since Thursday from four different unlocked cars, and a total of eight firearms have been stolen from unlocked cars in Sioux Falls and the surrounding area since May 29. At least one of those firearms was used in the commission of a crime.

When Maine Democrats gathered last month for their state convention, most of the party’s gubernatorial hopefuls wanted to talk about gun control. Progressive activist Betsy Sweet outlined her specific plan of action, telling the crowd gathered at an ice rink in the city of Lewiston that she’d work to ban assault weapons and enforce universal background checks. Attorney and National Guard veteran Adam Cote leaned on his experience as an Army officer to assure the crowd that he “would be a leader on this issue from day one.” |

Mothers, students and educators packed a room at the Texas Capitol on Tuesday to voice their opposition to arming teachers and school personnel, while experts invited to testify touted the state's school marshal program. The second day of hearings for a Senate select committee on school safety addressed the marshal plan the Legislature passed in 2013, which allows licensed school employees to carry firearms after taking an 80-hour course run by law enforcement. The Texas Association of School Boards reports that 217 districts have adopted some form of a program to allow school employees to carry firearms. |
