The South Porte Bank in Marion, Illinois, is not only allowing its employees to carry concealed handguns, they are letting everyone know they always have.
After a series of armed robberies in the area, including one at a nearby retail store, the bank is making the fact that they have had armed staff in the facility since it opened in 2011, become public knowledge.
In doing so, they have even hung signs on the institution’s entrances that proudly state, “This property protected by Smith and Wesson.”
...
Bank employees are reportedly pleased with the policy, which also allows customers with permits to carry in the facility as well. |

Since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, theoretically there have been 74 school shootings. This statistic had been willingly used by the media, until CNN decided to dig a little deeper. According to CNN, only 15 actually are school shootings, similar to the recent shooting in Oregon.
The higher statistic was provided by Everytown For Gun Safety — former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s pet project. Numbers matter, and so do circumstances. The problem with the inflated figures is that they include domestic and drug violence in the vicinity of schools. It’s disingenuous at best, and if anything adds ammunition to something pro-gun advocates have been saying. |

Ladies and gentlemen, perhaps the stupidest thing that gun nuts do—that would be aside from all the phenomenally stupid things that leave thousands and thousands of Americans dead every year from murder by gun, suicide by gun, accidental shooting by gun—is believing that their numbers are anything beyond a small, small fraction of the nation’s population.
Take, for instance, last weekend, when two gun nuts shot down three people in Las Vegas…

Weigel said much of the town has been on edge after police said Robert Dillon entered the CVS Pharmacy in Lawrenceburg and held a pharmacist hostage at gunpoint.
"This is something you do not see in rural southern Tennessee. You just don't see armed hostages," said Weigel.
He said after the attempted robbery and standoff, he posted on his gun shop's Facebook page a plan to name July 19 "Arm Lawrence County Day." He said he would offer a discount on carry permits and the response has been overwhelming.
"The phones were ringing first thing in the morning with people signing up for that carry permit class," said Weigel. "It's already halfway full and we've only been open six hours now." |

Two more people were killed in an Oregon school Tuesday morning. How many more must die before our Congress sees fit to develop meaningful regulation of gun ownership in the U.S.? How many more, Mr. LaPierre, must die before you will allow legislators to react to the will of the majority of people and not be cowered by National Rifle Association? |

“This is how bright I am — I didn’t think it was going to be that controversial,” he said. “Republicans said, ‘Folks aren’t stupid. … Why the heck are you making us spend $10 and wait around when we’re just trying to buy a hunting rifle?’ There were a thousand things going on and other issues we were dealing with, I guess I didn’t get it.”
By the time he became aware of the criticism, he said it was too late, as he had already signed the legislation.

Americans own so many guns that it’s causing sales to decline.
Since Barack Obama’s re-election, gun sales have spiked dramatically after he made comments calling for stricter gun laws. But two years later, American gun sales are declining, CNBC reports.
Analysts from KeyBanc reported an almost 10 percent decrease in gun sales during the previous year. Some analysts are saying this is proof those worried about gun bans have quelled that fear, but some, including Makshim Soshkin of IBISWorld, think it is simply the market returning to stability. |

The U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals this month found that Walgreens properly exercised its rights when it fired an employee for using his handgun in defense during a robbery.
At the center of the case is Jeremy Hoven, a pharmacist employed at-will by the drug store chain in Michigan. Hoven is a lawful concealed-carry permit holder who was fired by the company in 2011 after he exchanged gunfire with an armed robber while at work. |

The only substantial data I could find was from the Centers for Disease Control, and it shows that on a national level, firearms accidents have been on a steady downward trend for decades. Also, the National Shooting Sports Foundation has data showing that accidents have been trending downward since these types of records began being kept in 1903…and is currently at its lowest point ever.
But data connecting training and accident rates? It isn’t there. Never mind proof of causation, I couldn’t even correlate the two. If you can, share it with me.
Ed.: +1 to the author for knowing the difference between correlation and causation. |

When deputies arrived, they had to put out an active fire on the kitchen stove using a fire extinguisher supplied by the Santee man. The caller’s son was on the floor in a pool of blood.
The man said that his son was drunk when he turned on the stove while tearing up the kitchen. As the young man rampaged through the kitchen, items fell onto the now hot stove, setting it on fire.
He said his son had been drinking and tearing up the house. When the younger man came at him, he shot him in the leg with a .45-caliber pistol.
The investigation was turned over to detectives. No charges have been filed. |

Maybe for somebody else it’s a Taser or something else, but that’s the way I could relate to it personally.” |

I will admit that not all guns go into the right hands. This is not only proved by the slayings of the two Metro Police officers and other citizens recently, but also by the thousands of criminals who have continued to break the law by using them to rob, rape, assault and kill innocent people. This is illustrated all the time in the media. But what doesn’t get the same “air time” is the crimes that have been prevented by law-abiding people who own and use guns legally and responsibly. |

An armed intruder narrowly escaped an early morning break-in after a homeowner shot him in the neck on Wednesday, and he had to rely others in the neighborhood for help.
A Union Township man woke up around 2:30 a.m. to find three people, two armed men and a woman, inside his home, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The homeowner armed himself with a gun and shot one of the suspects, Demetrius Robinson, 24, in the neck, at which point all three fled.
“The homeowner woke up to a tussle, to sounds of a disturbance, and he defended himself by firing a shot and injuring one of the suspects,” Union Township Police Sgt. Jeff Brown said. |

Those who survived the incident unharmed instinctively followed the advice begin by experts at Texas State University’s Active Shooter first responder training program — a program that has now been adopted by the FBI. The instructors at Texas State advise anyone who finds themselves in the midst of an active shooter situation to flee the area if at all possible.
That’s right. RUN! If you cannot make a safe exit, HIDE! Lock and barricade any door you can put between yourself and the suspect. Turn out the light and remain absolutely quiet. This includes silencing your mobile phone since even the vibration of a muted phone can tip someone to your hiding place. |

His fellow demonstrators, however, were strapped with real firepower—the kind that the convention planners explicitly banned and that the NRA originally described as “downright weird” in open-carry demonstrations. While the NRA walked that statement back, Republicans seemed to share it at the convention booth for the Texas State Rifle Association, an NRA affiliate. “They’re poisoning the well,” said Alice Tripp, who manned the booth. “They say, ‘well, that's my right’ and that’s childish.”
The irony, as Tripp noted, was that the open-carry groups actually just want a legal right to openly carry pistols wherever they please. Many of them use the larger weapons simply to bring attention to their cause. |

Oregon State Sen. Ginny Burdick, described yesterday by the Portland Oregonian as “the Legislature's most vocal advocate for stricter gun laws,” said the parents of the Reynolds High School shooter “should be held criminally responsible for the death of Emilio Hoffman.”
Hoffman was the 14-year-old student killed at the Troutdale high school on Tuesday. The shooter, Jared Michael Padgett, reportedly brought the two guns he carried, an AR-15 rifle and a handgun, after removing it from what was described as “secure storage” at home. |

Yesterday’s Portland Oregonian profiled a science teacher-turned-gun control-advocate who was at Reynolds High School Tuesday when the shooting occurred, and he posted a lengthy message on Facebook detailing his newborn activism, and a proposal for gun control, but it omitted one important fact that is being largely overlooked by gun prohibitionists.
Wayne LaPierre was right. LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, told a sneering press corps 18 months ago that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, and that scenario played out at the Troutdale campus Tuesday. |

SB 53 will now go to the Assembly floor where it could be considered at anytime. It is CRITICAL that you contact your state Assemblyman TODAY and urge him or her to OPPOSE this egregious legislation. ...
SB 53 would require the purchasers of ammunition to register with the state Department of Justice (DOJ) prior to purchasing any ammunition. This registration would require the submission of fingerprints, a background check and fees to the DOJ. If passed and enacted into law, SB 53 would require the collection and reporting of personal consumer information and thumbprinting for all ammunition purchases throughout the state. It would also ban online and mail-order sales of all ammunition, including hunting and collectible ammunition. |

Licensed gun owners and a group dedicated to firearms rights protected under the Second Amendment filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Attorney General Martha Coakley, alleging her office has tolerated ambiguously defined regulations in an effort to suppress Massachusetts sales of the popular Glock handgun.
Commonwealth Second Amendment (Comm2A) sued Coakley in U.S. District Court in Boston, with six consumer and two commercial plaintiffs requesting a preliminary injunction that the group's president says would prevent her office from taking any action against a Massachusetts gun dealer for selling Glock handguns. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She well knows that by one enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. — JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1821) |
