A bill to issue guns to Maine Forest Rangers is close to becoming law. It passed the House and Senate and will go to the governor’s desk for signature. Bill sponsor Will Tuell’s initial proposal called for Forest Rangers to carry their own guns. But the bill was amended to include the firearm training of Forest Rangers, and guns issued by the state.

Tuesday’s Seattle Times carried a column by Nicole Brodeur about a shooting that occurred in the Columbia City area of Seattle, which she suggested may have been a “reality check” for that neighborhood, located north of the Rainier Valley.
Brodeur noted that there have been 85 shots-fired reports this year in South Seattle, “and most of them gang-related.” |

When Florida shifted from a “may-issue” to a “shall-issue” concealed-carry permitting process in the 1980s, the state unknowingly birthed a movement that swept the country. Not only did state after state adopt concealed carry, almost all eventually adopted a “shall-issue” permitting process. Today, every state has some sort of concealed carry, and very few of the states remain “may-issue.” |

Well, yesterday was the one year anniversary of the Pulse nightclub massacre, in which Islamic radical Omar Mateen murdered 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. To commerate the shoot a vigil was held in New York City outside the Stonewall Inn, site of a 60s gay rights demonstration. But instead of just remembering the victim, the vigil became an anti-gun rally. Journalist Chadwick Moore was there at the vigil and he joins us now to tell us what happened next. So Chadwick, this was supposed to be a vigil for the people who die, almost 50 who died in that massacre, but it became something else? |

Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi made the right decision to not challenge a federal appeals court ruling that quashed a state law prohibiting medical doctors from asking patients about guns in their homes. Florida’s Firearms Owners Privacy Act, enacted by the Republican-led Legislature and Scott in 2011, and nicknamed the “docs vs. Glocks” law, was an overblown reaction to a minute matter facing gun owners. Now, since Scott and Bondi let lapse last month’s deadline to respond to a February ruling by the U.S. 11th Circuit Court, doctors may treat patients more fully without, contrary to claims by some gun-rights activists, diminishing gun owners’ rights.

After snubbing the NRA’s offer to shoot with suppressors firsthand and learn how they really work, the Washington Post (WaPo) ran an editorial asking Congress to “turn a deaf ear” to the NRA’s claim that suppressors protect hearing. When the NRA submitted a letter calling them out for rejecting the invite, WaPo printed the letter but only after deleting the line in which the NRA mentioned that the paper’s editorial board refused to come learn about suppressors when asked.

During the recent terrorist attack in London, hundreds of British citizens cowered in pubs and restaurants, completely defenseless, due to the strict gun control laws in the UK. Many police officers were also unarmed, unable to help, and suffered injuries along with the civilian victims of the attack.
Florida’s Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey wants all law-abiding Americans to “arm up, get familiar with their firearm, and be ready to make terrorists worry about defending their own lives, for a change.” |

Changes made to Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law are taking center stage in the case against a Bradenton man charged with the October 2015 fatal shooting of another man. Juan Carlos Ramirez, 32, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Jose Luis Mendoza Aguilar, 48. He was scheduled to stand trial beginning Monday when the defense told the court they wanted to argue to have the charges dismissed based on the “Stand Your Ground” law. |

Hunters' opportunities to shoot game on Sundays would be expanded under legislation moving through the Senate, less than two years after it became legal. The Senate Rules Committee advanced the bill Tuesday. It would eliminate a prohibition on hunting with guns on Sunday mornings, which coincides with church services. Shooting near places of worship would remain illegal all day. Sunday hunting is limited to private property and barred in Wake and Mecklenburg counties. The proposal would lift the ban there and allow hunting on managed public lands. Some birds also could be hunted.

There are “desert rats” that have spent a lifetime exploring San Diego’s arid lands and they have never seen a bighorn sheep. And there is another group of wildlife lovers who spend the hottest days of summer at remote desert locations as citizen scientists counting these beautiful animals. You could be one of those. Kathy Dice, superintendent of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, has put out the call for volunteers to participate in the 47th annual Bighorn Sheep Count. This year’s event is scheduled for June 30 through July 1, with all new volunteers participating in a mandatory orientation in Borrego Springs on June 17. |

Florida's so-called "Docs vs. Glocks" law is officially dead. The demise of this ill-conceived — and unconstitutional — law is very good news. Florida has had any number of unnecessary and bad gun laws. Docs vs. Glocks, which essentially tried to stop doctors from asking patients about guns in their homes, had to be near the top of that list. |

So, I’m at the range with a friend, getting his feedback on a gun I’m reviewing, when he asks “Have you ever thought about setting up some kind of standardized course of fire to run these guns through? Maybe get three people of different skill levels to do it and record all of their scores?” Well, I hadn’t, actually. I don’t really have any experience designing courses of fire, so it was time for some crash research. Fortunately, my range buddy is not just a retired cop, but a retired LAPD tactics instructor with plenty of experience in these matters, and he turned to the task with a vengeance. |

Just before our first wedding anniversary, my wife and I were rear-ended at high speed while making a right-hand turn. Our car was totaled and my wife suffered serious soft tissue damage to her neck and shoulder. Although she has healed over the years (the pain has never completely left her), it was a long time before she could participate in any shooting sports, let alone fire guns with stiff levels of felt recoil. |

From the mountains to the coast, the strong hunting and fishing heritage in North Carolina runs deep. It began for me when my stepfather took me out in the woods near Winston-Salem to squirrel hunt and fish for bluegill and largemouth bass. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to see God’s creations throughout my home state while trout fishing in the Blue Ridge Mountains, turkey hunting in the Piedmont, striper fishing on the Roanoke River, red drum fishing on the Pamlico Sound, quail hunting in the Sand Hills, and duck hunting on the Outer Banks. |

Investigators say one of their narcotics deputies drives the car, and he had parked it in a back parking lot at Fun Spot America Saturday, only to discover it had been taken around 9:30 that night. Thirty minutes later, deputies found it about a half-mile away, ditched at the Artegon Market on International Drive. |
