The expeditious arrest of a Black man claiming self-defense in a subway killing this week in New York City stands in stark contrast to the way the police responded to Daniel Penny choking Jordan Neely to death on the subway last month despite the two instances sharing a number of similarities.
Jordan Williams was arrested Tuesday night and charged with manslaughter in the stabbing death of Devictor Ouedraogo, who was reportedly “acting belligerent and violent” on the J train when the two men encountered each other, according to local news outlet PIX 11.

Deaths caused by guns have never been higher in this country. It is no different here in Michigan, where the gun death rate has been climbing and where firearms are the leading cause death of children between the ages of 1 to 19.
The sheer impact of gun violence on human life should demand a response from Catholics who champion the dignity and sanctity of human life above all other principles. |

Congressman Clay Higgins (R-La.) this week voted to pass H.J. Res. 44, which overturns a Biden Administration Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) rule that classifies a firearm and stabilizing brace as a short-barreled rifle making it subject to regulation.
This new ATF rule contradicts the prior 2012 determination made during the Obama Administration – which many individuals, including disabled Veterans, relied upon – that firearms equipped with a stabilizing brace would not be subject to NFA control.
“For a decade, the ATF rule allowed braced pistol purchases. About 30 million Americans legally purchased 'braced' firearms, including me," Higgins said. |

House Republicans passed a resolution that would repeal a Biden administration rule tightening federal regulations on stabilizing braces for firearms, an accessory that has been used in several mass shootings in the U.S. over the last decade.
The resolution passed 219-210 nearly on party lines and after a contentious floor debate where Republicans accused the administration of “executive overreach” and Democrats condemned a bill they said would “help kill people.” Two Democrats voted in support and two Republicans voted against it. |

When these resolutions instruct county police not to enforce certain laws, such as red flag laws that allow the confiscation of firearms from certain people, they violate Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution. Article 6 declares that the Constitution itself and federal laws are “the supreme Law of the Land” and cannot be overruled or superseded by state laws or laws at lower levels of government.

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously directed staff to draft an ordinance that would be the "best gold standard" for placing restrictions on gun sales and ownership.
The measure -- which must be prepared within 60 days -- could ban the display of guns at the city's only licensed gun retailer and impose an annual fee on gun owners to pay for gun safety programs.
It also could require that gun sales be videotaped and that gun owners safely store guns at home and in vehicles, report guns that are lost or stolen and carry liability insurance.
"We want to make it as difficult as possible for (guns) to get into the hands of folks who might do something," said Councilmember Caroline Torosis, who co-sponsored the discussion item. |

Campbell has said she will propose bills to expand background checks, limit magazine capacity to 10 rounds or less, ban assault weapons and bump stocks, enforce guns-in-trunks law and also , repeal permitless carry, add a 72-hour firearm purchase waiting period and create a wreckless endangerment felony for failing to secure firearms if a child younger than 13 gains possession, among other proposals. |

President Joe Biden (D) and Vice President Kamala Harris (D) are seeking a second term, despite abysmal approval ratings. With that in mind, it’s curious that Biden announced that Harris would be his “leading voice” in addressing what he calls “gun violence.”
It’s not that Biden and Harris don’t agree on what they want to do with our freedom. Harris has not only expressed a desire to ban common semi-automatic firearms that gun-ban advocates call “assault weapons,” but she has also spoken in favor of confiscating those firearms from the millions of Americans who legally own and use them. |

However, the Second Amendment apparently must be protected at all costs, to the extent that any individual can obtain any firearm they desire, regardless of their background — be it criminal or not — with no concern for the consequences in terms of lives lost.
It would be fascinating to hear an explanation of why certain parts of the Constitution are optional, while other sections are mandatory. And while we’re at it, perhaps our Utah lawmakers could specifically explain their disdain for the 21st Amendment — you know, the one that repealed prohibition. |

We need a federal ban on assault weapons now. Bills that would accomplish this popular goal are now sitting in the House as H.R. 698 and the Senate at S. 25, waiting for a vote. Gun violence is the No. 1 cause of death for children in this country, and most of our nation’s deadliest recent mass shootings have been carried out with legally purchased assault weapons. We know a federal assault weapons ban saves lives. We’ve done it before, and we can do it again. From 1994 to 2004, the manufacture and civilian use of semiautomatic and automatic assault weapons was prohibited.

A fatal shooting on a remote Gwinnett County dirt road that was initially labeled a homicide is now being investigated as self-defense, police said Thursday.
The shooter in Tuesday’s incident was identified, but Gwinnett police are not publicly releasing the person’s name. Officials said the victim and shooter knew each other and that a fight preceded the gunfire. Investigators believe the shooting, which happened along the dark and quiet Stanley Road in Dacula, was an act of self-defense. As a result, no charges are being filed, according to police. |

A Columbus man who a jury previously found not guilty of murder for fatally shooting his second cousin is facing three years of probation for tampering with evidence and will not be tried again for a second murder charge.
Anthony Wilkes, 24, of the Far East Side, appeared in Franklin County Common Pleas Court on Thursday for sentencing where Judge Mark Serrott ordered him to perform 40 hours of community service. |

Indianapolis City-County Council committees approved a series of proposals this week that aim to address gun violence, after a weekend that saw multiple shootings across Marion County.
One measure would initiate the hiring of three attorneys to prosecute violent offenders on the federal level. Another proposal would control access to guns in Marion County, but would go into effect only if state law changes. The efforts are part of Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett’s violence reduction plan, which began last year with the hope of curbing crime in the city. |

However, the agreement paved the way for some gun control to continue to move forward. House Bill 2005’s unfinished frames and receivers and unserialized firearms and parts provisions will continue to move forward. The amendment was adopted today in the Rules Committee and passed 3-2. The amended bill is expected to receive a vote on the Senate floor very soon. Prosecutors have dropped the criminal case against a woman who St. Petersburg police said stabbed a man in February after reviewing evidence that she may have been acting in self-defense.
Shakerra Long, 30, was arrested on a second-degree murder charge earlier this year in the stabbing death of 43-year-old Brian Graham at a home in the 1900 block of 17th Street S in St. Petersburg. A neighbor reported that Graham had been found dead two days later, police said. According to St. Petersburg police, Long and Graham were in a domestic relationship. |

Bottom line: The 2nd Amendment is a deadly joke. For implicit in every individual’s “right” to bear a gun is the “right” to use it if, in said bearer’s sole assessment of the moment, somebody needs a good shooting.
