"I believe that the SCOTUS decision to deny certiorari to Emerson made it plain that they were not ready or willing to take up the matter of what has been called the Lautenberg Amendment. The VPC believes the decision is a positive development in their quest for the total abolition of private firearms ownership and unfortunately I have to agree. This ruling is a bad for those [who] ...believe the Lautenberg amendment to be flawed and unconstitutional."

"Officers recently cleaned out the evidence room and found that the department had guns that had been confiscated for various reasons as far back as the 1970s, Captain Cary Bristol said."

"We'd like to return guns to their rightful owners, if they aren't ones that have been seized for illegal activities," Bristol explained.

As most of you know, the sheriff is the top law enforcement officer in a county - superceding even federal power. Don't expect to hear that from John Ashcroft, any District Attorney, or for that matter - most candidates running for sheriff.

Readers? So, what's going on with the campaign for Sheriff in your county?

"Michael Bellesiles, a well-regarded historian at Emory University, should have known that if you're going to write about a topic that interests many Americans to the point of obsession, you'd better have your facts straight. In some significant aspects of his 2000 book, "Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture," he didn't. The resulting furor damaged the credibility of his book and threatened his reputation as a historian."

"MEN armed with tomahawks and hammers smashed windows and terrorised diners at four Sydney restaurants last night. The attacks occurred within 15 minutes of each other by a gang of six or seven men. Armed also with table legs, the men, aged in their early 20s, started their rampage at 10pm"

-- Hmmm. Gun-free Australia. Gangs of thugs running free and wild, unafraid of being stopped. Perhaps there's a connection here for the observant.

"The weekend shooting rampage at a bar and restaurant on Manhattan's East Side is yet another clear demonstration that New York state's anti-gun laws have failed to protect the public.

"failure of gun control." "

"In response to the editorial, "Airline security: Stuck at the Gate?" (AC-T, June 9). Rep. John L. Mica and the Air Line Pilots Association are right - pilots should be allowed to carry guns, but they should also have to go through some sort of training. What good would a pilot with a gun do if he or she didn't know how to use it?"

Kitsap County has some odd zoning regulations.

"The rejection brought a quick reaction from Phil Canter, project manager for Olympic Sportsmen's Club. He said his group will sue to invalidate that section of the county's zoning code as well as a separate ordinance creating no-shooting areas.

"They have just said they will not allow ranges anywhere in Kitsap County," Canter said following the hearing."

"I’ve never met a door that couldn’t be opened or a pilot who’s ever seen an air marshal. So I was perplexed and disappointed when the undersecretary of transportation for security testified before the Senate Commerce Committee that the pilots we entrust daily with multimillion-dollar machines and thousands of lives aren’t to be trusted with side arms."
