On Sept. 2 at around 7:31 p.m., Searcy police officers arrived at a residence on Choctaw Drive in reference to a disturbance and possible shots fired. One day after the New York Times editorialized against the idea of armed private citizens acting in self-defense, an armed Tennessee homeowner is being credited with apprehending a pair of dangerous Georgia prison escapees, with the help of an armed neighbor.

Fox News headlined its report by calling the homeowner a hero. Other news agencies are also reporting that the unidentified homeowner held the pair “at gunpoint” until police arrived to take them into custody. That homeowner caught Donnie Rowe and Ricky Dubose attempting to steal his vehicle, according to NBC29. The homeowner grabbed his gun, summoned a neighbor who was also armed, and called the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department.

Gerry Martin isn't sure he will ever tell a police officer during a traffic stop that he has a concealed-weapon permit - and possibly a weapon - on him. The acquittal of a Minnesota officer in the death of a licensed gun owner who volunteered that he had a gun seconds before being fatally shot during a traffic stop adds to the worries of African-American gun owners about how they are treated by police and society.

The governor of Maine recently signed a bill that prohibits the creation of a registry of gun owners within the sovereign borders of that state. This will not only protect the privacy of gun owners residing within the Pine Tree State, but will thwart any effort of the federal government to establish such a registry in the future. Signed into law by Governor LePage on June 12, the new law specifically mandates that: “a government agency of this State or a political subdivision of this State may not keep or cause to be kept a comprehensive registry of privately owned firearms and the owners of those firearms within its jurisdiction.”

Australia will allow gun owners to hand in illegal firearms without penalty beginning next month as concerns grow over crimes involving such weapons, a federal minister said Friday. The three-month nationwide amnesty on surrendered firearms will be Australia's first since 1996, when a lone gunman killed 35 people in Tasmania state and galvanized support for tough national gun controls. Justice Minister Michael Keenan said the new amnesty was needed to reduce the number of guns in the community because of new security threats including Islamic extremism.

More than half of the 1,368 gun deaths in Delaware from 1999 to 2015 were suicides, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition, at least 80 percent of suicide attempts involving a gun are successful, far higher than other methods, according to several studies. It’s partly because of those statistics that Democratic lawmakers say they introduced legislation Tuesday that would institute a process for removing guns from people believed to be a threat to themselves and others.

Amarillo, if not the Texas Panhandle, is described as the reddest of the red political areas — a strong conservative area. For example, there have been numerous rankings and lists through the years that have tagged the 13th Congressional District in Texas (which comprises Amarillo and a good chunk of the Texas Panhandle) as the reddest area in the nation.

Next year, the country will spend one week in June commemorating the anniversaries of three different shootings. On June 12, 2016, there was a massacre at a gay night club in Orlando, Florida. On June 17, 2015, a white supremacist opened fire at a historic black church in Charleston. The most recent shooting, June 14, 2017, saw a zealous Bernie Sanders supporter targeting congressional Republicans at a park in Alexandria, Virginia, just a few miles outside the District of Columbia, as they practiced for an upcoming charity baseball game against Democrats.

Tens of thousands of gun owners in California are in legal limbo because of the state’s newly expanded assault weapons ban. It all has to do with delays in implementing the law, which no one wants to take responsibility for. For years, ARs have been the weapon of choice at the “Guns Fishing and Other Stuff” gun store and shooting range in Vacaville.

As is too often the case after a tragic shooting, the politics started almost immediately after a gunman injured House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and four others while they were practicing for the beloved annual charity congressional baseball game. Some on the right immediately pointed fingers at Muslim extremists, Kathy Griffin and everyone in between without a Make America Great Again hat. Others on the left jumped in to blame Republicans for obstructing gun safety laws, a few of them gleefully neglecting the normal obligatory thought or sensitivity for the pain of the victims.

The reason a lot of shooters out there have problems with double-action triggers is due to bad trigger control. I blame the plastic fantastics; so many people have gotten used to only having to deal with a trigger pull in the 4-pound to 7-pound range common to poly striker guns, which are just too easy.

We feel honor-bound to start with what we think the lawyers call “a statement against interest,” though common vernacular might be closer to simply outing ourselves: We were hacked at the Apex folks for a good long time. You may recollect that we ran the SIG Sauer P320 pretty hard in three calibers and four versions (here, here and here), luckily portending a large-scale military adoption (by the U.S. Army) which has since come to pass.

Sometimes the irony is so thick, you can’t cut it with a laser. House Republicans had planned to hold a hearing on Wednesday on an NRA bill that would make it far easier for gun owners to buy silencers. The Hearing Protection Act — I kid you not — was set for subcommittee scrutiny until news broke about the Field of Screams.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property . . . Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them. — Thomas Paine, Thoughts on Defensive War (1775).
