"Headlines are important. Often times while scanning through news, that is all that will be noticed or retained. They are also crafted to facilitate SEO--search engine optimization--and thus the likelihood that a piece will feature prominently in searches to maximize traffic. Skilled press release writers know this, and VPC has been issuing press releases for a long time."

"In other words, a media professional wrote a headline knowing it was false. The press release was authorized. The VPC legal director is quoted, so we also know it was vetted. The lie was not only calculated, it was sanctioned. And the perpetrators are counting on two things: media complicity and us not knowing any better."

The Devil In The Details: LA Times Ignores Substance, Attacks U.S. Gun Manufacturers

"The L.A. Times is parsing math."

"If you were to not read Josh Meyer's June 17 article very carefully, you might think that 90 percent of the weapons recovered from Mexican cartel raids originated in the United States:" ...

"Pay close attention, however, to the wording. That’s 90 percent of the seized firearms – that authorities are able to trace. This wording actually reflects the vagueness of the GAO report's highlights:" ...

"Holy bureaucracy, Batman – these statistics are based on an incomplete knowledge of sample size? Not only that, but the much-ballyhooed 'tracing' of these weapons is apparently done by looking at the firearm and saying 'Yep, that looks like an American weapon.'" ...

"It's been a disappointing year for American cities seeking to curb violence via tough gun laws."

"Since last June, when the US Supreme Court struck down key parts of the District of Columbia's gun-control ordinance, cities have seen the 20,000 local gun regulations enacted over the years begin to slip from their grip, one by one." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Their disappointment is akin to that of alchemists seeking to transform lead into gold: no matter how many different ways you try "to curb violence via tough gun laws", it just doesn't work!

U.S. guns fuel Mexican drug violence

"Fresh[sic] evidence[sic] that high-powered[sic] U.S. firearms are behind much[sic] of the Mexican drug violence isn't likely to change America's gun-control policy, experts say"

"A Government Accountability Office report says 87 percent of guns Mexican officials seize and turn over to U.S. authorities come from America. Many firearms used to kill thousands of police and government officials in Mexico come from gun shops and gun shows in Southwest border states, the GAO said."

"But critics told The Christian Science Monitor the report covers no new ground and appears to be an attempt to 'embarrass Republicans for their ties to the NRA,' in the words of Bill Vizzard, a criminologist at the California State University in Sacramento." ...

"Well, OK, the 'Guns in Bars' bill goes into effect July 14, one month away, before the moving companies are booked from the mass exodus out of Tennessee."

"There are three main arguments the permit carrying gun owners are using to justify this bill:"

"'Other states don't have any problems,' 'concealed weapon gun carriers are some of the brightest people walking the earth,' and 'it's my Second Amendment right.'"

"The honkey tonks on Broadway, numbering over 60 in a two-block area, make Tennessee unlike any other state." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: So much idiocy, so little space. "Mass exodus" - there are nine states remaining that ban guns in bars, which one are you going to? "Other states ..." - so you are saying that Tennesseans, as a whole, are less responsible that inhabitants of other states? "The honky tonks ..." - Oh, I guess that is exactly what you are saying.

"Convicts have no constitutional right to DNA testing, the Supreme Court found, a ruling that left the accessibility of potentially critical evidence to the discretion of individual states." ...

"'A criminal defendant proved guilty after a fair trial does not have the same liberty interests as a free man,' Chief Justice Roberts wrote, adding that it remains an 'open question' whether 'proof of 'actual innocence' is enough to overturn a conviction after a fair trial." [emphasis added]...

Submitter's Note: So if proof of actual innocence is not sufficient, whatinthehell IS 'sufficient'?!? The Chief Justice has a frightening take on Blackstone's classic "Better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer".

"As criminals become more brazen in their attacks, what is the average citizen to do?"

"Some 'experts' will tell you that the odds you'll come into contact with any of these criminals are low, so you should just go about your life, don't go out after dark unless you must, never go anywhere alone, and rely on the (now dwindling) police forces to keep you safe."

"A better option is to take responsibility for your own safety. Buy a gun and get training to use it properly. Get a concealed handgun license. Say 'no' to crime." ...

"D.C. police have adopted emergency regulations to greatly expand the models of handguns that District residents can own, a victory for opponents of gun control."

"The changes mean District residents can legally obtain at least 1,000 additional types and models of handguns that had previously been banned. The changes, published today, are designed to keep the city compliant with last year's Supreme Court decision that overturned the city's long-standing ban on handguns." ...

"State lawmakers have put local officials on the hot seat with the recent passage of a law allowing guns to be carried in public parks."

"... Municipalities have until Sept. 1 to opt out of the new provision and ban guns from their own parks." ...

"'This thing turned 180 degrees,' said County Commission Chairman Houston Naron Jr. '... The biggest issue overall that makes this something we've got to give careful consideration to is this is involving children.'"

"... If local officials take no action, then handgun carry permit holders can pack heat while watching baseball games, hiking or strolling by playgrounds." ...

"Congress bowed to the National Rifle Association last month and voted to permit loaded guns into Acadia National Park. It is not too late to reconsider this move before the federal law takes effect on Feb. 22, 2010."

"Year after year, NRA-sponsored bills to let loaded guns into the national parks had failed. This year, Rep. Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, slipped an amendment to that effect into a popular credit-card reform bill. The amendment was adopted 67-29 with both of Maine’s Republican senators, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, voting for it. So did Rep. Michael H. Michaud, Democrat, of Maine's Second District. Rep. Chellie Pingree, Democrat, of Maine's First District, opposed it." ...

"The SJC decided to review the law less than a year after a Lowell District Court judge dismissed firearms charges against a Billerica man whose handicapped son was accused of shooting a BB gun at a neighbor and who then showed police officers where his father kept other unlocked weapons."

Two of Denver’s “Finest” placed an order at a McDonald’s drive-through in the early morning hours of May 21. Distressed over what they perceived to be unsatisfactory service, the officers became agitated, and one of them “flashed his police badge and pointed a pistol through the drive through window in a threatening manner, before driving off without paying,” reports the local CBS affiliate.

The officers involved in the incident have been placed on “administrative leave with pay” — that is, paid vacation — while the county prosecutor decides whether to file felony menacing charges against them. Any private citizen who did the same would be in jail already, of course.

What is it with police and drive-through service, anyway?

A police officer from western Wisconsin has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography while on duty.

Anthony Miller of New Richmond entered the plea in St. Croix (KROY) County Circuit Court Thursday.

The state Department of Justice says agents served a search warrant at Miller's New Richmond house in December of 2008.

DOJ says Miller worked as an officer in Hastings, Minn. and admitted he downloaded and traded pornographic pictures of children while on the job. Agents say Miller traded images of child pornography through a file sharing program and searched the Internet for child pornography.

Sentencing is scheduled for August 17.
