Radio silence. It’s never a good sign. Experts and pundits will tell you that before a terror attack, the chatter goes silent. When radio stations stop broadcasting – not even an emergency alert – you know something is very wrong. In the military, typically it means an operation is underway. But radio silence on social media? That’s something most of us have never seen before.

The Hancock Central High School Marksmanship Team has been around for 10 years, but Randal Meyer doesn’t think too many people know about it.
Meyer, the sergeant major in the HCHS Junior ROTC and the team’s instructor, said some Houghton High School students are part of the team.
The team competes at the Michigan Technological University shooting range, Meyer said. They shoot .177 pellet rifles, which is the same rifle used in some Olympic contests.
Meyer said marksmanship competitions are different from other sports in that the competitors don’t travel to contests. The team shoots at the Tech range and then sends paper targets to whichever school is hosting the competition.

Concealed carry and personal defense have been hot topics among Americans for quite some time now. Defending yourself and your family from violent attack is important to us, and we naturally seek to learn as much as we can and to be as informed as possible. However, as with serious discussion, the true facts get all mixed up with rumors, myths and downright fabrications. It is often difficult to sort them out and find things that work for us and make us safer. What follows, in no particular order, are some of the myths, mistakes and misconceptions regarding concealed carry that I have encountered. |

I’m aware stats suggest that very few shots are usually fired in defensive engagements, but that doesn’t stop me from preparing for a siege-length battle versus multiple attackers. I believe this is why many tactical-minded folks choose handguns or carbines with greater capacity over the superior energy of shotguns—their old 870 holds only five rounds and takes as many seconds to reload. Yet, times are changing. While tactical shotguns with dual magazine tubes, drums and cylindrical magazines are now available, 2017 is the year of the removable-box magazine. |

Most schools are off for the summer, but some Ohio teachers are spending part of their break training for next fall. They’re preparing in case of an active shooter in their schools. But this isn’t ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) training, where educators are taught to barricade doors or counter a shooter with distractions. In the small town of Rittman, Ohio, south of Akron, a pro-gun organization funs so-called force training. |

The attempted mass political assassination of GOP congressmen last week has, to paraphrase Doctor Johnson, concentrated the solons' minds wonderfully when it comes to the right of self-defense. Washington, D.C. has some of the most draconian gun laws in the nation, and last week, Congress suddenly realized the truth of the old saying: "When seconds count, the police are minutes away." While Steve Scalise's security detail prevented a systematic mass slaughter, 99% of Congress has no such police constant companionship.

Wednesday morning turned tragic when a gunman opened fire at a practice in Alexandria, Va., for the annual congressional charity baseball event. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., two U.S. Capitol Police special agents, one staff member and one former staff member were wounded in a despicable attack that sent other members of Congress running for cover. We'll continue debating what caused a deranged individual to commit this horrible act, but the sad fact is that whether it is by bomb, vehicle, knife or gun, America, and the world, are witnessing horrific carnage.

In an educational op-ed posted Thursday at newyorkdailynews.com, criminologist and author John Lott makes the case that the previous day’s shooting at a GOP Congressional baseball practice proves why the country needs national Right-to-Carry reciprocity. Lott, president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, said restrictive carry laws—like the one in Washington, D.C., forbidding nearly all law-abiding citizens from carrying firearms, even if they have permits from their home states—leave people helpless against attack. |

Today, 19 children will die or receive emergency treatment for a gunshot wound in the U.S. And tomorrow, another 19 will. And then another 19 the next day. In fact, 91% of all children who die from firearms in high-income countries across the world come from the United States, and guns are the third leading cause of death for all children between ages 1 and 17. Those are a handful of the sobering statistics reported in a new study on gun violence in Pediatrics. |

U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R – AL) wants to make it legal for members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to carry guns in the nation’s capital. Brooks was at softball practice in Alexandria, VA with his fellow Republican lawmakers Wednesday, when a gunman unleashed a spray of bullets on the field. Rep. Steve Scalise (R – LA) was shot and remains in the hospital in serious condition. Four others, including two Capitol Police officers, who ultimately killed the gunman, were also shot. |

In the winter of 2008, shortly after the election of Barack Obama, my fiancee and I stopped into a local gun shop in Austin to buy ammunition for target practice, a hobby we enjoyed once or twice a month. Though we hadn't asked, the clerk behind the counter told us that all the AR- and AK-style rifles were back-ordered. We could get on the waitlist, he offered, but the delay might be a couple of months — "if it's still even legal to buy one then." |

One of the most powerful of transgressions which the certain lawless residents of Chicago unleashed upon the nation, was the rigging of elections and of course the very politicized phrase, “Vote early and vote often”. While the five words succinctly capture the reign of mayor Richard J. Daley’s stranglehold over the Windy City for two decades, good old fashioned voter fraud continues to persist in the digital age. On Friday, a Texas constable was convicted of manipulating the voter forms of senior citizens, according to Dallas News.com.

A newly-released on children and guns is making lots of Monday headlines, but there are several points about the study, or at least the reporting, that should raise a few questions and plenty of eyebrows.
The study reports that “More than half (53 percent) of deaths due to guns among children were homicides,” according to CBS News. However, most of the reporting, with the possible exception of USA Today, seems to avoid the term “gangs.” In the USA Today report, one finds this: “Boys account for 82% of childhood firearm deaths and 84% of non-fatal injuries, with black boys between 13 and 17 making up the majority of homicide victims.” The USA Today report offers these details” |

Remember the old Samsonite commercial with the gorilla tossing around the suitcase? Well, that’s me with my guns and shooting gear. I’m tough on my kit, but I know I’m not alone in that. So when I first laid eyes on the Elite Iron Revolution bipod, my first question was: Is this a match made in heaven, or has this bipod met its match? I’ve used this bipod nearly exclusively on my long-range GA Precision 6mm Creedmoor since it was introduced about four years ago. I’ve beat on it, pounded on it, and otherwise treated it terribly, and other than the wear on its finish, it’s as good as new.
