"The Supreme Court ruled Monday that people do not have a constitutional right to refuse to tell police their names."
"The 5-4 decision frees the government to arrest and punish people who won't cooperate by revealing their identity."
"The decision was a defeat for privacy rights advocates who argued that the government could use this power to force people who have done nothing wrong, other than catch the attention of police, to divulge information that may be used for broad data base searches."
"Police, meanwhile, had argued that identification requests are a routine part of detective work, including efforts to get information about terrorists." ... ------
Well as long as it will help catch terrorists it's okay that we are moving to a police state! |

"A sharply divided Supreme Court ruled today that people who refuse to give their names to police can be arrested, even if they've done nothing wrong." ...
"The court's 5-4 decision upholds laws in at least 21 states giving police the right to ask people their name and jail those who don't cooperate. ..."
"Privacy advocates say the decision gives police too much power. Once officers have a name, they can use computer databases to learn all kinds of personal information about the person."

"The killing of three Birmingham Police officers with a weapon designed for war could spur debate about a need for more stringent gun restrictions."
"Alabama's current regulations on assault-type weapons don't exceed federal requirements, said Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the Nashville field division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives."
"The slaying Thursday of three Birmingham police officers with an assault-type weapon drew attention to the easy availability of such high-powered firearms, said Mike Coppage, director of the Alabama Department of Public Safety and a former Birmingham Police chief."
"Coppage said a balance must be struck between the constitutional rights of citizens to own firearms and the safety of the law enforcement and the public." ... -------
According to the CDC, bans of firearms are ineffective, so it is not a question of "balancing" rights and safety, but of further infringing rights without impacting officer safety.

"A sweeping mental health initiative will be unveiled by President George W Bush in July. The plan promises to integrate mentally ill patients fully into the community by providing "services in the community, rather than institutions," according to a March 2004 progress report entitled New Freedom Initiative (www.whitehouse.gov/infocus/newfreedom/toc-2004.html). While some praise the plan's goals, others say it protects the profits of drug companies at the expense of the public."
"Bush established the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health in April 2002 to conduct a 'comprehensive study of the United States mental health service delivery system.' The commission issued its recommendations in July 2003. Bush instructed more than 25 federal agencies to develop an implementation plan based on those recommendations." '' |

"During the 1991 Persian Gulf War, U.S. troops used the .50-caliber sniper rifle to take out Iraqi armored personnel carriers from a mile away. Its most powerful cartridge can penetrate inch-thick steel from that distance."
"Could the same weapon, in a terrorist's hands, be used to bring down a commercial airliner or unleash toxic chemicals from a railroad tank car?"
"Originally designed for the military, the .50-caliber rifle is legally available to anyone 18 or older who can pass a background check."
"Most civilians use it for target shooting. Some people fear it could be wielded for darker purposes."
"'They're obvious weapons of choice for terrorists,' said Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va. 'They have no function in hunting, unless you're hunting humans.'"
"Mr. Moran introduced a bill in May that would prohibit sales of the gun, except to the military and law enforcement agencies. He is the latest in a succession of federal and state legislators who have sought to ban or more tightly regulate the .50-caliber, drawing spirited opposition from gun-rights activists."
"These efforts have failed for good reason, say defenders of the rifle."
"'There's no scientific basis for any of this,' said Michael Marks, president of The Fifty Caliber Institute, an advocacy group. 'There's no historical basis. My concern is that this is drawing attention and resources away from some very real threats.'" ... |

An off-duty Houston police officer shot an armed man early Sunday after a confrontation at a northwest Houston car wash, officials said.
Officer Hector Ramirez, 31, was working a security job at the car wash in the 7100 block of Tidwell about 5 a.m. when he spotted James Lee Madden, Jr., 38, carrying a pistol in his waistband, police said.
Police said Ramirez, a five-year HPD veteran, shot Madden when he saw the man make some type of suspicious gesture. Madden was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition. He was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon.
Ramirez was not injured. -------

"Assistant Principal Jamie Addington, who is a hunter, 'knew instinctively' that he had heard the sound of a gun being loaded, his wife, Sherry, told the Washington Post."
