Monday's quadruple failure of four different gun control measures in the Senate was virtually a foregone conclusion, and it happened only a day after anti-gun Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) virtually acknowledged to ABC This Week that discussing why yesterday’s measures would not have prevented Orlando would be falling “into that trap.”

At a press conference today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees, joined a bipartisan group of Senators to introduce a compromise proposal “to help keep guns from terrorists and make America safer.” The measure would prohibit those on the No Fly List or the Selectee List from purchasing a firearm. “This body has been impotent, weak, silent and a bystander to this carnage of gun violence that is going on in the United States,” Kaine said during a press conference in the Capitol today. “There will be no meaningful gun safety reforms done in this body unless it is bipartisan. We’ve got to make progress, and to make progress we’ve got to do it in a bipartisan way.”

Her remarks follow:
“Well, here we go again. Another mass shooting—this time the largest in history. Forty-nine dead, 53 injured. Another chance for Congress to take meaningful action. Another missed opportunity.

Atlanta Public Schools is saying little about an investigation into guns suspected stolen from the school district. The suspected theft comes as the school district forms its own police department to replace the Atlanta Police Department officers who had patrolled local schools. District officials have said an in-house police force will give them more control over how officers are assigned and trained.

Some Tennessee lawmakers are calling for universal background checks while others are standing firm in their opposition to more gun control. “When it comes to the Constitution, there are no compromises,” said Rep. Glen Casada, R-Franklin, chairman of the House Republican Caucus. Last October, Middle Tennessee State University conducted a poll of 603 random voters statewide. Eighty-three percent said they were in favor of background checks on all gun sales, including gun show and private transactions. |

The story the bounty hunter eventually told police made an already bizarre incident even stranger. Although no one died in the incident, McCarther's shooting of Lupe and Roger Sanchez has raised questions about the authority bounty hunters possess and the lack of regulations they face in Colorado. |

In this time when it seems impossible for Congress to agree on anything, it's refreshing to know that sometimes they can still manage to find common ground. And that common ground is that America will endure more mass shootings. Hooray. The Senate had four chances to pass gun-control on Monday, with two weak Democratic bills and two even-weaker Republican bills. And congratulations, Congress, you defeated them all! Thanks to you, we can look forward to even more death and carnage and mayhem and late-night comedy hosts writing somber monologues about persevering through difficult times. |

Officers took nearly 100 guns off the streets during a violent Father's Day weekend, police said. Some were semi-automatic weapons. With the help of community organizations and gun buy-back events, officers have seized 4,200 guns so far this year. Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson renewed his push to get guns off the city's streets. "These are exactly the types of weapons that have captured the national spotlight and I can tell you right now, there's no place for weapons of war on the streets of Chicago," Johnson said during the department's graduation and promotion ceremony at Navy Pier Tuesday. |

After three burglaries in the last three days many people are wondering if gun shops in the Twin Tiers will tighten up their security to prevent yet another robbery. Hesselson's in Elmira Heights is a popular spot for people shopping for hunting guns. Owner Tom Witzel says even after the recent burglaries he's not worried about a break in at his store. "We do have two security systems in the store so we have a regular security system which alerts the police department and there's a backup system to that too," Witzel says, "Plus the fact that Elmira Heights Police Department is like right behind us, so they kind of circle the building already 10 to 12 times a night." |

Relax, people. Your Second Amendment rights are in no danger of being eroded. But your Fourth Amendment rights? They're as good as gone. In fact, they've been gone a good while now. The noisiest gun partisans say that the 2nd Amendment is their protection against a government run amok. But if the U.S. Supreme Court continues to shrug and give attaboys to police who stop and search people on a whim, then all that talk about guns protecting us from government overreach is just chatter.

Montana lawmakers in Washington voted for and against two sets of opposing gun control measures Monday. None of the four amendments, which were spurred on by the recent mass shooting at a nightclub in Orlando, passed the Senate votes. Republican Senator Steve Daines voted in support of two Republican measures that would improve but not expand background checks and require the FBI to seek a court order before preventing a gun sale to a suspected terrorist.

Gun control debate dominated the June 20 Charlottesville City Council meeting as members of opposing sides of the issue cited the Second Amendment—“the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”—and the Declaration of Independence’s inalienable rights to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” that victims of gun violence had been denied. In the wake of the Orlando massacre, the largest slaughter of Americans by a lone gunman, City Council passed 4-0 a resolution demanding state and federal legislators enact legislation to require comprehensive background checks and ban assault weapons. |

Mayor Jack Thomas and the Park City Council will likely address state gun laws this summer in the weeks or months after the deadly attack at an Orlando, Fla., nightclub. It is not clear what sort of role the Park City officials could have in a discussion that typically unfolds on the state and federal levels. Tim Quinn and Rudi Kohler, though, could eventually hold a post of influence should the state government consider changes to gun laws as a result of calls for tighter restrictions in the period after Orlando. Quinn, a Republican, and the Democratic Kohler are vying for the District 54 seat in the Utah House of Representatives. District 54, now held by retiring Republican Kraig Powell, stretches from Heber City into Park City. |

As a national debate rages on gun rights and gun control, a federal appeals court is mulling a Florida law that restricts doctors from talking about gun ownership with patients. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday heard arguments on a legal challenge to the 2011 law that requires doctors to have a legitimate safety concern before they start asking a patient about guns. Doctors who violate the law could face professional discipline, such as a fine, or even lose their medical licenses. |

I am not a gun-fearing liberal who thinks that we should ban all guns. I come from a family of avid hunters and gun owners. I received my first handgun as a Christmas gift when I was 13. I respect guns, I enjoy shooting from time to time and if I really thought the government was plotting to snatch up all our guns, I’d be pushing back against that with a vengeance. But I’m also not a gun-owner who eats the fear-laced shit sandwich the NRA keeps putting on my plate, and hearing the news that the senate has once again refused to pass common sense gun reform fills me with frustration. |
