JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Imagine the scenario: A federal agent attempts to arrest someone for illegally selling a machine gun. Instead, the federal agent is arrested — charged in a state court with the crime of enforcing federal gun laws.

Farfetched? Not as much as you might think.

The scenario would become conceivable if legislation passed by Missouri's Republican-led Legislature is signed into law by Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon

Russia's Emergencies Ministry says it has sent a medically equipped aircraft to bring the 93-year-old creator of the AK-47 assault rifle to Moscow for treatment.

A spokeswoman for the ministry told Russian state news agencies that doctors will accompany Mikhail Kalashnikov on the flight to Moscow on Sunday from his home in Izhevsk, about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) to the east of the capital.

Kalashnikov spent two weeks in an Izhevsk cardiology clinic in May.

The AK-47 is the world's most popular firearm with an estimated 100 million spread worldwide. Its name stands for "Avtomat Kalashnikova," or Kalashnikov's automatic, and the year it went into production.

As progressives from across the nation gathered at their annual Netroots conference, one conservative organization found itself on the lips of many speakers as enemy number one — the National Rifle Association. While House and Senate Republicans, pro-life activists, former Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and the Koch Brothers received their usual share of lambasting, no one had a target on its back quite like the NRA.

Just as summer enthusiasts are hitting the outdoors with warnings of careful swimming, boating, etc., the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) is focusing on another topic as an area to be careful. The issue of safe firearm storage, for all guns, isn’t anything new. However, the NSSF would like to make gun owners aware of their “S.A.F.E. Summer” campaign.

The acronym S.A.F.E. stands for Secure your firearms when not in use, be Aware of those around you who should not have unauthorized access to your guns, Focus on your responsibility as a firearm owner and Educate yourself and others about safe firearm handling and storage.

In 2004, relatives of eight people shot in the Washington-area sniper attacks received $2.5 million dollars from the maker and seller of the rifle used in those shootings. That was a matter of simple justice. But the gun lobby had no use for that kind of justice. They went to work and, the next year, Congress passed the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, severely reducing the legal liability of gun manufacturers, distributors and dealers for reckless acts that send guns to the black market.

The measure (HB 1355) would block gun sales to some people who voluntarily admit themselves for mental-health treatment. It’s backed by the National Rifle Association’s Marion Hammer, one of the best-known gun-rights advocates in the country – which made her all the more effective at helping to pass the measure.

...

As of Thursday, 3,940 people had contacted Scott’s office about the bill, with 3,914 asking him to veto it.

Hammer began pushing back with an e-mail alert on Wednesday, and said she hadn’t expected so much opposition.

A Fox News panel pre-gamed the George Zimmerman trial on Sunday afternoon, debating the crucial strategies and pieces of evidence less than twenty-four hours before the most high-profile trial of the year begins.

Host Greg Jarrett read Florida’s self-defense statute, which says, “A person is justified in the use of deadly force and does not have a duty to retreat…if he reasonably believes such force is necessary to prevent immanent death or great bodily harm to himself.”

More research is needed into the effects of these laws. However, the evidence available now should trouble anyone who thinks laws should make society safer, rather than promoting violence.

People are confused about what constitutes self-defense. What many people term self-defense is really just the last act in an argument gone out of control, a situation that escalates until one or both parties reach for a gun.

Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid insist gun control legislation is not dead — they say they're strategizing on how to bring the issue back to the Senate floor.

Even if it does return, one proposal unlikely to survive is an assault-weapons ban. Military-style assault rifles now form a nearly $1 billion industry supported by gun owners who spend thousands of dollars collecting these firearms.

And while the gun-rights lobby keeps invoking the right of "self-defense" to defend Americans' right to buy these guns, home protection is low on the list of reasons gun enthusiasts keep buying military-style weapons.

GUN manufacturers have gone to great lengths to avoid any moral responsibility or legal accountability for the social costs of gun violence — the deaths and injuries of innocent victims, families torn apart, public resources spent on gun-related crime and medical expenses incurred.

But there is a simple and direct way to make them accountable for the harm their products cause. For every gun sold, those who manufacture or import it should pay a tax. The money should then be used to create a compensation fund for innocent victims of gun violence.

Domain names for MAIG were registered in 2006 by the New York City Department of Information and Technology, and have remained on official city web servers ever since.

Yet the group’s “action fund,” through which he has piped at least $14 million of his own money in ads over gun control this year alone, is registered as a 501c4, a nonprofit “social welfare” group with the same tax status as, say, the Karl Rove-linked Crossroads GPS or Organizing for Action, President Obama’s grassroots arm. And it raises questions about why a website associated with the group is being managed by City Hall.

It may not be the biggest crowd the Washington Arms Collectors ever attracted to its monthly gun show at the fairgrounds in Puyallup, but they are an enthusiastic bunch and Saturday morning saw WAC members signing Initiative 591, the “Protect Our Gun Rights” (POGR) measure announced earlier in the week.

The battle cry: “Save your gun, sign 5-9-1!”

The grassroots effort is off to a decent start as Evergreen State gun owners undertstand what is at stake. I-591 is the counter measure to a 15-page measure put forth two weeks ago by the Seattle-based Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility. I-591 prohibits government gun confiscation without due process, and requires that background checks meet a uniform national standard.

“There are elements in the United States government moving to obstruct commercial ammunition sales,” said Anthony Melé, an international firearms dealer and owner of AMI Global Security, LLC. AGS is a defense trade and manufacturer’s exporter registered with the U.S. Department of Defense and the United Nations.

A gun show was held at the Dayton Community Center Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23, but there was much more on display than guns.

Several dozen vendors bought space for more than 200 tables, and by 2:15 p.m. Saturday they had already welcomed somewhere between 600 and 800 guests.

Inside the were lots of guns to see, of course, but there were also purses, bird feeders, jewelry, toys, wood carvings, knives, coins, antiques, live reptiles and politicians.

The Spurs weren’t the only ones who took serious Heat this week. A thief died trying to rob people waiting in line to buy the new $180 LeBron James sneakers, after he was shot by a customer waiting patiently for his shoes. Police have not charged anyone with a crime, and for now consider the shooting to be self-defense.

In order to take this to the next level and get a victory, your action is needed right now. Starting today, and all the way through the rest of the year, local governments around the state need to be pressed to take a similar action – passing legislation in support of the right to keep and bear arms locally. And at the same time, calling on the state legislature to do the same. When the state is blanketed with local communities willing to nullify violations of the 2nd Amendment, the state legislature will be on notice. Do your job, or else.

Legislation aimed at reinforcing the right to bear arms across state lines has been introduced by Rep. Morgan Griffith.

The Virginia Republican's bill, the "Protecting Lawful Transportation of Firearms Act", would work toward the establishment of common laws across the states for the transportation of a firearm from one to another. As it currently stands, states often have conflicting laws regarding how a lawful owner may transport firearms.

The only public shooting range in Manhattan is tucked away in the basement of a commercial building at 20 West 20th Street. After passing through the lobby and descending a winding staircase, I came to a long corridor whose green walls are adorned with framed newspaper clippings, photos and painted-on golden bullets pointing the way. The muffled blasts of gunfire grew louder as I got closer.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of a citizen to bear arms, in lawful defense of himself or the State, is absolute. He does not derive it from the State government. It is one of the high powers" delegated directly to the citizen, and `is excepted out of the general powers of government.' A law cannot be passed to infringe upon or impair it, because it is above the law, and independent of the lawmaking power." [Cockrum v. State, 24 Tex. 394, at 401-402 (1859)]
