"'Why do you need a gun?' We’ve all been asked this question at one time or another. My essay is a compilation of what (I think) are some of my better responses. I don’t think these points will persuade any hard core gun control advocate, but they might be handy if you ever have a civilized discussion with the growing portion of the population that just doesn’t understand our point of view. Enjoy . . ." ... |

"Apparently the United States Declaration of Independence isn’t good enough for Moms Demand Action. They’ve come up with their own version to 'declare our independence from the gun lobby and its complicity in our nation’s epidemic of gun violence.' They don’t say anything about their complicity in attempting to violate every American’s Constitutional rights. They’re urging everyone to make paper flags, join community parades and otherwise participate in the activities on the 4th of July that celebrate the very freedoms they’re trying to take away (oh, and please send them some money ...). They don’t seem to remember that guns are why we have the freedom to celebrate that holiday. Go figure. And a few days after that . . ." ... |

... "The gun control debate is certainly worth reopening. But if we’re going to reopen it, let’s not just rethink the politics. Let’s take another look at the facts. Earlier this year, President Obama ordered the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assess the existing research on gun violence and recommend future studies. That report, prepared by the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, is now complete. Its findings won’t entirely please the Obama administration or the NRA, but all of us should consider them. Here’s a list of the 10 most salient or surprising takeaways." ... |

"I am not a US citizen (but, would love to become one day). I grew up in a place (India) where guns are not easily accessible and I did not think about owning them for a long time. I was always told to stay away from trouble and I would be OK. I grew up thinking that the world is fair and if I don’t harm anyone, I wouldn’t be harmed. That worked out great for a while until the day it didn’t and I quickly realized that there are physically bigger people who do not always have the nicest of intentions . . ." ... |

"I think every gun owner has had a moment of self-doubt, a moment when they’ve questioned their reasons for owning guns. Do we buy gun after gun for that fleeting feeling of euphoria only to cast it aside as another firearm catches our eye, or is there a deeper reason for why we brand ourselves firearms enthusiasts? I was born in Red China, three months before the start of the Cultural Revolution, and went to college during the student protests and massacres of Tiananmen Square. I’ve lived through the depredations of the Red Guards, and felt that brief glimmer of hope in 1989, only for it to be crushed beneath the steel treads of government tanks . . ." ... |

"I truly do not understand how so many members of my tribe – that is to say, Jewish folk – can say and mean 'Never forget,' and simultaneously push for civilian disarmament. I cannot comprehend how one can reconcile 'Never forget' with 'only the government should have guns.' The same goes for African Americans, the LGBT community, and other minorities who have been or are persecuted, abused, and even extinguished, yet vote D and detest the idea of firearms for personal protection. Apparently Mormons are the rare group that seems to 'get' how important private firearms ownership is . . ." ... |

"Rocket Hub is at it again with new crowd funded uppers from North West Custom Precision. This upper is a nice pairing for that DIY, no serial number, 80% AR15 lower you may have completed. The completed stripped lowers are made from 7075 aluminum and have a flat top picatinny rail. Unlike completed (and more expensive uppers), you'll have to do a little gun smithing to get this baby sending lead down range. This is totally doable, and there are lots of good tutorials on the interwebs. ..." ... |

"The majority of folks I know that own AR15's would love to have a belt fed upper. In California, we'd only be able to have links that hold 10 rounds; above that would be considered high cap. Despite a HUGE demand for for belt fed uppers, they are almost always something that gets teased and never comes to market." ... |

"In 2005, with the passage of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, the gun prohibitionist lobby lost one of its most virulently powerful weapons against the gun industry. Until then, large cities plagued by the out-of-control gang violence of the late '80s and early '90s were systematically using the courts to do to the gun industry with litigation what they could not do with legislation. It was taking a huge toll on the industry--even unsuccessful lawsuits can become enormously expensive to defend against." ... |

"It’s time for ostensibly republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to piss or get off the pot (as the Brits are wont to say) re: the raft of post-Newtown civilian disarmament bills sitting on his desk awaiting his signature. Or veto. Here’s the updated list of gun ban bills passed by both the houses of the New Jersey legislature, incorporating the three passed yesterday. Note: nj.com provides the description of the bills (e.g., the .50-caliber rifles is the most powerful weapon ever created by hand of man), not me. Oh and there are 12 more headed down the proverbial pike." ... |

"The first time many civilians saw armored vehicles deployed by police officers was when news broadcasts showed them rolling onto streets in the Boston area after the April terrorist bombing."
"Coincidentally, the Decatur Police Department obtained a BearCat armored vehicle, the most popular model used by police nationwide, from its manufacturer in Massachusetts a few days prior to that attack."

"Last week, we looked at the story of 14-year-old Jared Marcum, who as an 8th grader at Logan Middle School in Logan, West Virginia, was ordered to remove his NRA t-shirt, despite the shirt being perfectly acceptable according to the school's posted dress code. Young Mr. Markum refused, was taken to the principal's office, and then arrested, for 'obstructing an officer' (a 'crime' he committed by talking when told by the cop to shut up). If convicted, he could be sentenced to a full year in jail."
