Gov. Jay Nixon has vetoed Senate Bill 656, which would have eliminated the current requirements that individuals must obtain training, education, a background check and a permit in order to carry a concealed firearm in Missouri. The bill would have allowed individuals, including those from other states, to legally carry a concealed firearm even though they have been denied a permit because their background check revealed criminal offenses or caused the sheriff to believe they posed a danger. |

I still remember your funeral. I still remember the white casket, small with only two handles on each side. I still remember the red teddy bear someone had placed near your head. I still remember then-Florida state lawmaker Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall weeping over your coffin, then-Congressman Kendrick Meek standing there in speechless anguish, and then-Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio deploring the violence that took you away at just 9 years of age.

Gays with guns don’t get bashed. That was part of Kimberly Lang’s thought process when she bought her first gun last week. Lang, 26, and her wife, Naomi Ramirez-Lang, 27, had been talking about firearm ownership for some time, but the Mesquite residents always hesitated. They have two children and anything-can-happen concerns with having a gun in their home. |

For this I want to delve into the conversation a little. Most on the “pro-gun” side say that restricting liberties or gun rights will not solve this. Also, the “gun-control” side says that we need to keep guns away from terrorists. I agree to both arguments. But what is feasible? What works? |

Starting July 1, Idahoans will be able to defend themselves — without needing permission from the government to do so. You no longer will have to see your sheriff, prove your worthiness and pay a fee to carry a weapon concealed. It’s a big day for freedom. Equally important, it’s a big day for the safety and security of all Idahoans. |

The carnage in Orlando last week left Americans feeling helpless. And so it makes sense that many took heart in Congressional Democrats’ push for gun control legislation. In light of shooter Omar Mateen’s potential ties to terrorism, politicians jumped on a loophole that allows Americans on terrorist watch lists to buy guns. Connecticut senator Chris Murphy spent 14 hours leading a filibuster calling for an end to this loophole on June 15. When the Senate failed to pass any laws that might address the problem, House Democrats staged an old-school sit-in for 26 more hours. It was all very dramatic.

Gun ownership rights can be denied to people who commit reckless acts of domestic violence, the Supreme Court ruled Monday in a decision that brought a blistering dissent from Justice Clarence Thomas. The 7-2 ruling, written by Justice Elena Kagan and endorsed by conservative as well as liberal justices, upheld the sentences imposed on two Maine men who had argued their misdemeanor convictions for domestic abuse should not trigger a federal gun control statute. Thomas and Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented.

Andrea Teichner knew exactly when she’d had enough. “My point was three years ago,” she said, recalling how she watched in April 2013 as an amendment to a gun control measure introduced in the U.S. Senate failed to get the 60 votes needed to avoid a filibuster (a legislative delaying tactic) and was effectively defeated. |

Friday’s episode of his program Real Time on HBO featured former RNC chairman Michael Steele, The Daily Beast’s Betsy Woodruff, Democratic operative Paul Begala, and comedian Larry Wilmore on the panel. While the segment that led into the Second Amendment started off with Maher bashing our system of government, saying that our Constitution needs a rewrite, Begala noted how the current Democratic gun control push, specifically the “no-fly, no-buy” bill (which Gawker found odious) is common sense. |

Singapore is known for its strict laws, which include prison sentences for a wide range of what people in the west would consider minor offenses, such as littering. The country is also known for having one of the toughest gun laws in the world, with unlawful possession alone being punishable with a prison sentence or a caning, while using or attempting to use a gun illegally is punishable with death. And as a controversy over an annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rally revealed, those same Singapore laws apply to 3D printed guns of all kinds. |

Political Heat blogger Chris Walker contends that state Rep. Bob Gannon's gun view relies on the doctrine of "mutual assured destruction." What Gannon and others who think like him are trying to do, Walker asserts, is to shift the blame of gun violence away from guns and onto business people who don't want guns in their establishment. His reasoning isn't rational, the blogger says. |
