The victim, James William Harris, 39, died from a .22 caliber gunshot in the 9:18 p.m. incident Thursday at Beaver Creek Trailer Park in Odenville.
St. Clair County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Gary Cone said the victim's son, Perry William Harris, 20, was initially arrested in the shooting, which apparently arose out of a domestic violence incident.
He later was released without being charged. A county grand jury will review the investigation later. |

FULL TEXT BELOW... ------- A Santa Fe woman arrested during an antiwar protest in March has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit.
Librarian Rebekah Azen, 44, was protesting U.S. military action in Iraq on March 22nd when she was arrested.
Her lawsuit says she was protesting at an intersection when she saw a police officer grab a sign from another protester.
She demanded to know what he was doing.
The lawsuit says she was then arrested for questioning the officer.
The criminal complaint for her arrest says she grabbed the officer’s wrist and that she was a danger because she was in a busy roadway.
Her attorney, Rick Sandoval, says numerous witnesses will testify she never touched the officer and that she was singled out over pro-war protesters because of her stance on the war. |

The writer’s logic in the letter “Nearly 31,000 killed by guns each year” (YDR, June 6) baffles me. He disputes that the benefits of carrying concealed firearms outweigh the costs of crimes committed by firearms by citing 1998 data: 318 deaths by firearms committed in self-defense compared to nearly 31,000 total firearms deaths. Would he be happier if the number of deaths committed in self-defense were, say, 50,000 or 100,000? I sincerely hope not. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
To trust arms in the hands of the people at large has, in Europe, been believed...to be an experiment fraught only with danger. Here by a long trial it has been proved to be perfectly harmless...If the government be equitable; if it be reasonable in its exactions; if proper attention be paid to the education of children in knowledge and religion, few men will be disposed to use arms, unless for their amusement, and for the defence of themselves and their country. — Timothy Dwight, Travels in New England and New York [London 1823] |
