"The market for guns is growing faster than the national debt. Paradoxically, the guns themselves are shrinking. Powerful handguns are getting smaller, easier to carry and less expensive. The Smith & Wesson M&P9 Shield continues this trend. It’s a pistol trimmed down to a size often reserved for weaker cartridges like the .380, but it maintains many of the ruffles and flourishes of its larger siblings in the M&P series. That’s all well and good, except that there are hidden costs that can outweigh the benefits of proliferating pistol shrinkage . . ." ... |

"While enjoying a lovely dinner in Newport, RI with TTAG’s impresario, the conversation drifted to firearm technologies that could still use some improvement. We agreed that the magazine has always been one of the weak points of any semi-auto pistol platform. Feed lips get bent, springs weaken and can rust, schmutz can enter and cause all sorts of long- and short-term problems with functioning and reliability. Anyone who is serious about their carry equipment knows that you need to maintain your mags and should have a spare close at hand. Even then, they screw up occasionally. So what can be done about this state of affairs? . . ." ... |

"As part of our continuing series ramping up and training for the IDPA Nationals in September, we have to take a hard look at the gear you’re going to need for shooting Stock Service Revolver. Obviously, you’ll need a gun, but one of the most critical components is also the most frequently overlooked. I’d tell you to guess while I wait, but that doesn’t work so well in a text format, so I’ll just tell you: speedloader carriers." ...

"The Galco Ankle Glove is the Cadillac of ankle holsters. As if anyone could ever make that analogy. The foundation (the part that actually wraps around your ankle) is made of thick neoprene material. This is the same material that’s used to make wetsuits for divers and cold water surfers. It’s thick, cushy, durable, and comfortable. Our first thought was to take up combat swimming, but common sense prevailed and we figured the leather holster pouch (and gun) may not fare as well in 65 feet of salt water. Baywatch lifeguards could use this piece of equipment as they rarely seem to enter the water." ...

... "Well, while shooting my Smith & Wesson Shield at the range last Sunday, I had a failure, which you can read about here if you’re interested. The short version is that on the second round of the first mag, the Shield failed to go into battery, and the slide was completely locked up. Since the Shield is my primary gun for the summer, it certainly made me stop and think. What if this had happened when I really needed my gun? After only one shot, my one and only gun was now a rather expensive club."

"Precision shooting is a pretty broad category. Or maybe it’s a really, really narrow category as the word 'precision' denotes an elite quality that not everything can possess. Are we talking long range precision shooting? Speed precision? Competition precision? Camp Perry? Optics or iron sights? All are viable questions, and outside of hunting big game (Never taken a whitetail, muley or elk past 300 yards) and long-range plinking (700 yards is my max so far) I’ll be honest and say my experience with the above generic categories beyond the hunting realm is admittedly limited." ... |
