Defenders of the Second Amendment often use federal lawsuits in an attempt to protect their right to keep and bear arms. This is a really bad strategy. At its core, the Second Amendment exists as a limit on federal authority. When you sue in federal court, you do so in the hope that the federal government will limit itself.

The second amendment reads: a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be abridged. This suggests to me that the government (we, the people) has the right to regulate who can own and shoot them. It would indicate that we are expected to be responsible and employ common sense in there use.

And in the worst case scenarios, those guns are used in crimes. On July 1, 2015, 32-year-old Kate Steinle was shot and killed near Pier 14 in San Francisco. Police say the gun used was stolen from a federal agent's car.
