John R. Lott, Jr.: The Big Lie of the Assault Weapons Ban

"This wasn't supposed to happen. When the federal assault weapons ban ended on Sept. 13, 2004, gun crimes and police killings were predicted to surge. Instead, they have declined."

"For a decade, the ban was a cornerstone of the gun control movement. Sarah Brady, one of the nation's leading gun control advocates, warned that 'our streets are going to be filled with AK-47s and Uzis.' Life without the ban would mean rampant murder and bloodshed."

"Well, more than nine months have passed and the first crime numbers are in. Last week, the FBI announced that the number of murders nationwide fell by 3.6% last year, the first drop since 1999. The trend was consistent; murders kept on declining after the assault weapons ban ended."

What does President Bush think of the Kelo decision?

Presidential press secretary Scott McClellan:

"I think the president has made his views clear when it comes to private property rights. In terms of Supreme Court decisions, we obviously have to respect the decisions of the Supreme Court."

-------
Submitter's Note: Respect their decision? I don't like their decision.

Where will this treason go next? Watch for an assault on your firearms like you've never seen before!

"If District of Columbia officials persist in their attempt to thwart revision of D.C. gun laws, Congress ought to consider recision of D.C. home rule, John Michael Snyder, public affairs director of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), suggested today in a statement submitted to the House Committee on Government Reform." ...

"While a number of local officials argue that adoption of the proposed Act would be an infringement on local home rule, said Snyder, "this ignores the fact that the District of Columbia is a special constitutional entity. ..."

"President George Bush should regulate blunt objects that could cause severe injuries or even death. . ."

"Farm and Field Auctions maintains that the United States cannot stand idly by, while Great Britain takes the lead in injury prevention. . ." We can claim our rightful lead in personal safety by regulating all blunt objects before they do."

"We have taken the first step," says Brown. "We do not allow anyone to bid on rocks, metal pipes, clubs or bats, not even rolling pins or frying pans, unless they can produce a certificate of proper training. Now it is up to the government to take action."

"Most of us who write for STR presently own guns, have shotguns, or received weapons training while in the US military. As a teenager, I owned shotguns and rifles, a semi-automatic .22 with 4x scope, was briefly a member of the NRA and an enthusiast at the local gun club. Later, I earned a sharpshooter ribbon with a weapon I had never shot before, the M-16, as a US Air Force trainee."

"Perhaps the greatest reason many Americans believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone and killed Kennedy is that a majority of Americans have never shot any guns, and certainly not a rifle with a scope. If the Warren Commission had been composed of unbiased shooters instead of senators and lawyers, the final verdict would likely have rejected the ludicrous assumption that Oswald acted alone. The 'trumpeting of falsehood, however virtuous in intent,' was indeed a vicious lie, supported by the government then and now."

"A Southern Illinois sheriff finds himself on the other side of the law, after a grand jury indicts him and two of his deputies."

"On Monday, officers arrested Wayne County Sheriff Everett 'Sonny' McCulley, Chief Deputy David Zola, and Deputy Mark Tipps. McCulley and Zola face felony charges of obstructing justice and official misconduct. Tipps faces felony charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm and obstructing justice. That's because court documents claim Tipps fired shots at a suspect back in December of 2004, but didn't include that fact in his police report. According to grand jury indictments, McCulley and Zola were included because they helped furnish false information regarding the incident."

"'Mayor Daley could give Emperor Nero some lessons in how to mismanage his responsibilities,' said SAF founder Alan M. Gottlieb. 'Here's a guy who should have, and could have, provided true leadership to prevent these kinds of outbreaks, but instead, he's spent far too much of his time trying to interfere with the gun rights of honest citizens. On the one hand, he touts Chicago's tough gun laws and wants to make them a model for the state, yet he hasn't stopped gun crime in his jurisdiction, on his watch. What's wrong with that picture?"

"The publication of a Unesco study of deaths in Brazil by firearms has ratcheted up the pressure on the Chamber of Deputies to vote authorization for a referendum on the sale of firearms and ammunition (Congress has already passed a bill prohibiting the sale of firearms and ammunition in Brazil). Voting in the chamber is presently tied up because of other measures that have priority (temporary measures (MPs) and bills earmarked 'constitutional urgency')."

"Justice Souter's vote in the 'Kelo vs. City of New London' decision allows city governments to take land from one private owner and give it to another if the government will generate greater tax revenue or other economic benefits when the land is developed by the new owner."

"On Monday June 27, Logan Darrow Clements, faxed a request to Chip Meany the code enforcement officer of the Towne of Weare, New Hampshire seeking to start the application process to build a hotel on 34 Cilley Hill Road. This is the present location of Mr. Souter's home."

"Clements, CEO of Freestar Media, LLC, points out that the City of Weare will certainly gain greater tax revenue and economic benefits with a hotel on 34 Cilley Hill Road than allowing Mr. Souter to own the land."

"The proposed development, called 'The Lost Liberty Hotel' will feature the 'Just Desserts Café' and include a museum, open to the public, featuring a permanent exhibit on the loss of freedom in America. Instead of a Gideon's Bible each guest will receive a free copy of Ayn Rand's novel 'Atlas Shrugged.'"

At a time when people are upset and fearful of serious sex offenders that are being placed in group homes in their neighborhood with little or no oversight, the Democrats in the legislature have once again rallied around their favorite 'tough on crime' issue and declared war on… bullets!"

"But while these gun bills have passed the floor in their house of origin, bills to extend parole periods and require GPS tracking of sex offenders, prevent felons from owning sex offender group homes, keep sex offender group homes away from schools, and create a one-strike punishment for certain sex crimes against children have been defeated or stalled in Sacramento by the Democrat majority"

"This story suggests that the man was not at fault, had a reasonable and honest belief that he was in danger and tried to run away. How was he rewarded? By being shot in the arm and foot despite following steps that gun ban extremists and certain law enforcement personnel often advocate. They would have us believe that running away or driving off when faced with danger will bring a pleasant outcome to the event. Unfortunately, as this story indicates, criminals do not follow the same guidelines."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.... We've been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of government himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price. — Ronald Reagan
