You now can pack heat if you are visiting the Macomb County's register of deeds and vital records offices. Officials removed security equipment and armed guards just days after the county clerk sued, in part, to lift a firearms ban.
Clerk/Register of Deeds Karen Spranger said she had asked for armed guards to protect her offices, but not the X-ray machine and metal detector to prevent people from bringing guns to the county-owned Talmer Building in downtown Mt. Clemens.
Spranger found the security equipment and guards gone when she arrived Tuesday morning, according to a news release from her private attorney, Frank Cusumano. The register of deeds and vital records were recently moved into renovated space in the Talmar Building. |

Oh California. First you write unconstitutional gun control bills, then your senile communist governor signs them into law, then you try to write regulations on how you'll implement the law which go far and beyond the scope of the already unconstitutional and asinine law you're tasked with enforcing, and then your own Office of Administrative Law tells you that your regulations are crap. |

While the city did recently lift its ban on stun guns (in order to avoid a lawsuit it most certainly would have lost), elected officials and busybody bureaucrats still seem to think the easiest way to bring down crime in Baltimore is to make it as hard as possible for law-abiding folks to exercise their Second Amendment-protected rights. There’s been no acknowledgement in City Hall (or in the Democrat-controlled Legislature in Annapolis) that the Maryland Firearms Safety Act, passed in 2013, has been an abject failure. Self-defense still isn’t a good enough reason to receive a concealed-carry license. |

A judge is re-hearing evidence in the murder case against an Escambia County man who shot his stepfather as he broke into the family home in 2014.
A jury trial for James Greenwood, 35, was set to start Monday, but the case was kicked back to an evidentiary hearing under Florida's revised "stand your ground" law.
Greenwood's attorney, Christopher Klotz, filed a motion to dismiss charges under the "stand your ground" law, claiming his client was defending himself against Al Jones, his estranged stepfather. |

“Two-thirds of gun owners say protection is a major reason they own a gun,” according to a recently released Pew Research Center survey. Seventy-two percent who owned a firearm said they have a handgun and one out of every four carry it outside their home—a figure that rises to 41 percent when they consider their community unsafe. Four out of 10 have a loaded gun close-at-hand in their residence. |

When I say spare tire, I mean those little “donut” spares that grace the trunks of most modern automobiles these days. While they're not full-size wheels, we're sure glad to have them if the need arises. In the same spirit as keeping a donut in the trunk, the strategies for boosting the defensive potential of less-than-ideal defensive guns provides a temporary emergency measure until something better can take its place. I’m not saying that a .22 rimfire pistol is “just as good” for home defense as a medium or large-bore center-fire pistol, but what I am striving to do here is provide those with limited resources the best edge possible—for now. |

Tacoma has dropped its ban on stun guns, like Tasers, meaning people can now legally buy, sell, carry, manufacture and own them within city limits.
The City Council voted to repeal the ban on Tuesday.
City legal staff recommended ending the ban following a 2016 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court. That ruling effectively overturned the conviction of a Massachusetts woman who was found to be in possession of a Taser.
...
Earlier this year, a gun-rights advocacy group prodded the city with a letter, saying that Tacoma’s ban on Tasers and other stun guns violated the Second Amendment. |

Australia’s Justice Minister Michael Keenan announced two weeks ago that his government would be trying once again to remove “illegal” guns (that is to say, privately-owned firearms that the government doesn’t know about) from society. This time it would not be a mandatory buyback program such as the one that followed passage of the country’s draconian gun-control laws back in 1996, but instead an “amnesty” program where those “illegal” guns could be turned in without fear of prosecution of their owners. It starts July 1 and runs through the end of September. After that, the hammer comes down on anyone found to own one of these “illegal” guns. |

A local processing fee has been dropped in Washington County to give more residents an opportunity to obtain a concealed handgun carry permit.
Sheriff Fred Newman said all non-mandated fees associated with obtaining a Virginia concealed weapons permit in Washington County will be waived beginning July 1. County citizens will no longer be charged the county’s $25 processing fee and will only be required to pay the $15 fee mandated by the state.
The $25 local fee had gone into the county’s general fund. |

As I was growing up in south-central Colorado, every couple of years my family was invited by friends to drive a few hours away to an area 10 miles south of Raton, N.M., to a shooter’s paradise known as the NRA Whittington Center (WC). I never really saw the practicality in it. In my ignorance, not once did I bother to go see what all the fuss was about. But that all changed when I finally went to the WC in late December of last year. |

The United States Supreme Court has declined to affirm the constitutional, Second Amendment rights which are guaranteed to citizens. They did so by rejecting an appeal from a lower court. That court had ruled that the state of California can impose severe restrictions on issuing permits to carry firearms.
In refusing to hear the appeal, the lower court ruling remains in effect.
Only two justices, Clarence Thomas and the newly seated Neil Gorsuch, dissented. Quoting them from Fox News, “The Court’s decision… reflects a distressing trend: the treatment of the Second Amendment as a disfavored right,” they wrote. |

It is extremely disappointing to report that the Supreme Court of the U.S. has rejected the petitions for their review of the cases Peruts v. San Diego County, and Binderup v. Sessions, but it's better to have the cases rejected than to have them heard and lost.
And unfortunately, winning either of these cases with the current justices wasn't anywhere close to a sure bet. |

Today, June 27, Governor Brown signed the state budget along with budget trailer bills including AB 103. AB 103, the Public Safety omnibus budget trailer bill changes current law by significantly expanding the prohibiting categories for firearms to include persons who have a warrant for a felony or disqualifying misdemeanor. Current law prohibits a person from owning, purchasing, receiving, possessing, or having under his/her custody or control a firearm upon conviction of a felony or for ten years upon conviction of a specified misdemeanor (29085 pc). AB 103’s drastic policy change will violate an individual’s right to due process as warrants can be issued without notice or hearing. |

Seminole County Tax Collector Joel Greenberg soon will allow his employees to openly carry firearms, particularly those who seize property such as desks, chairs, computers, file cabinets and phones from tax-delinquent businesses.
“When we go out and seize property we don’t know what could happen,” Greenberg, who was elected last year after promising to “modernize” the office, said Wednesday. “I’m a big believer in the Second Amendment, and this is mainly to protect our staff, our customers and to serve as a deterrent.” |
