A former Shelby Township public official is expected to be arraigned Monday in Macomb County Circuit Court on a felony weapons charge in connection with a traffic accident he was involved in.

Nicholas Nightingale, a former township trustee, faces one felony count of carrying a concealed weapon, and misdemeanor charges of operating a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol level of 0.17, possession of a weapon under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

He was ordered to stand trial following a preliminary exam in 41A District Court on May 21. Defense attorney Vincent Manzella said he plans to file a motion to quash or overturn Visiting Judge Matthew Rumora's decision on the CCW charge.

On Wednesday, the Senate Codes Committee passed S.6151 (Kavanaugh) on a 9 to 4 vote. This legislation is a desperate attempt to moot United States Supreme Court review of New York City’s unconstitutional firearm travel laws in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. City of New York. The Supreme Court has already rejected New York City’s effort to moot the case by offering to amend its current regulation. Now, suddenly, there is a second effort to stop the Supreme Court from hearing this case by changing New York State penal law.

The gunman who killed 12 people at a municipal building in Virginia Beach appears to have bought the guns he used legally, a U.S. federal agent said on Saturday. ATF Special Agent Shawn Benedict said two .45 caliber pistols were found at the scene of Friday's rampage, one purchased by the shooter in 2016 and one in 2018. Two other firearms were found at the home of the suspect, 40-year-old DeWayne Craddock, Benedict said at a news conference.

One of the most popular handguns in the world is a Swiss-German design that traces its origins back to the immediate postwar era. The Sig P226 is a full-sized weapon that while failing to capture the prize as the Pentagon’s new pistol in the 1980s went on to achieve underdog acclaim as the official handgun of the U.S. Navy SEALs.

Deer hunting season is still several months away but hunters are already buzzing about South Carolina’s “most popular, sought after, economically important and controversial game animal” — the white-tailed deer. The S.C. Department of Natural Resources recently released its 2018 Deer Harvest Report, showing a slight increase in the total number of deer killed in the state. The complete report, compiled by wildlife biologists Charles Ruth and Jay Cantrell with the SCDNR’s Big Game Program, can be found at the department’s website, dnr.sc.gov.

Mark Cuban might be a billionaire entrepreneur, NBA team owner and celebrity investor with a television show. But a constitutional scholar, he’s not. It’s time to call foul on Cuban’s latest foray into the gun rights debate. He offered to “update” the Second Amendment. What he really offered was lower the hoop to six feet so gun controllers could finally dunk. Cuban’s proposed changes include:

The United States militia is enshrined in the Second Amendment of the Constitution. And while the militia movement of today is widely known, its history – and the history of independent Constitutional militias stretching back to the dawn of the republic – is far less well known. Why does this matter nowadays? Because understanding the historical roots of America's militias helps modern-day members appreciate the role they play in our federal system of government.

TO BE CLEAR, there was nothing I could’ve done to save him. It’s just a fantasy that has been circling my brain in a holding pattern for decades — that somehow I could have intervened. On the evening of Dec. 14, 1992, a student armed with a semiautomatic rifle fired into the guard shack at the entrance to Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, Mass., seriously wounding the guard stationed there. Moments later a car pulled up to the guard shack and the killer shot point-blank into the car’s side window.

Too many guns. Too little hope. After each succeeding gun massacre, a dull fatalism grips the American mind. The victims of such massacres are counted in the thousands; the victims of individual murder, of suicide, and of heartrending accident by now are counted in the tens of thousands. Yet action to save lives is vetoed again and again by an implacable minority who see gun ownership as integral to their identity.

The question whether video games affect people is a sensitive one, especially when it comes to the possible relationship between violent video games and gun behavior. Unfortunately, it is a topic that must be discussed especially since among the resource-rich countries, the United States actually has the highest child mortality rate resulting from unintentional firearm use.

During his CNN town hall on Sunday, 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Seth Moulton (MA) was asked what he would do to combat the gun violence problem in America. Naturally, Moulton ran with the typical anti-gun talking points, despite being a former member of the military. "It's almost embarrassing to be standing here as a member of Congress even how little we've done about gun violence in America," Moulton said. "I carried guns In Iraq every single day, two. I had to use guns for my job. Guns saved my life. But weapons of war have no place on our streets or in our schools."
