"It depends on what the meaning of the word 'viral' is, because that will certainly be news to tracking websites like What’s the Trend and hashtags.org, where it’s not even registering as significant. Looking it up on the Twitter website, it appears to be an active enough hashtag, but then, it’s getting a lot of artificial help from the media. It also looks like not all who are using it are doing so in support of citizen disarmament." |

A former police officer accused of killing “Big Boy” — a huge elk beloved by a Colorado community — was convicted Tuesday of all nine counts against him. A jury in Boulder County found Sam Carter guilty of illegal taking of big game, attempting to influence a public official, forgery and tampering with evidence, among other charges, said Boulder County prosecutor Stanley Garnett. ... It wasn't just the killing of the animal that had people in Boulder upset, Garnett said. "The fact that somebody would use the uniform and badge of a police department in such a case was equally disturbing to the community," he told NBC News.

A routine request in Florida for public records regarding the use of a surveillance tool known as stingray took an extraordinary turn recently when federal authorities seized the documents before police could release them. The surprise move by the U.S. Marshals Service stunned the American Civil Liberties Union, which earlier this year filed the public records request with the Sarasota, Florida, police department for information detailing its use of the controversial surveillance tool.

A heavily armed man killed three police officers and injured two others Wednesday in Canada’s eastern New Brunswick province, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said. The RCMP tweeted that a man it identified as Justin Bourque, 24, of Moncton, had opened fire and that three officers were mortally wounded and two others injured. It said Bourque was “armed and dangerous” and it warned residents to stay indoors away from windows and to lock their doors.

Most history students never learn that even Martin Luther King Jr.—arguably history’s greatest spokesperson on behalf of nonviolence—had armed guards stationed outside of his home and a pistol tucked in his sofa in 1955 when he emerged as the leader of the bus boycott in Montgomery, Ala.
But he did.
As time went on, he came to trust in the philosophy of nonviolence in his personal life as much as he believed in its power politically, and eventually got rid of both the guards and guns. At some point, though, we glossed over this complexity and began to think of nonviolence as preordained and as a natural outgrowth of the movement. |

Handgun sales are hot — particularly compact pistols that are easily concealed for self-defense.
Smith & Wesson’s handgun sales jumped by nearly a third at the end of last year, and Colt Manufacturing sold twelve times as many handguns early this year as it did in 2013.
And now Colt is moving to boost its handgun production by 50%. |

For those unfamiliar with the Open Carry Texas movement, it’s helpful to know who’s who and what’s what.
There are two Open Carry Texas philosophies or core strategies employed by two different Open Carry Texas organizations. While both organizations lawfully tote long guns during demonstrations as a way to bring awareness to the state law that prohibits the open carry of handguns and to normalize the practice of openly carrying any firearm, they go about it differently.

While gun prohibitionists have been trying to capitalize on the recent Santa Barbara tragedy to push their gun control agenda, on Monday CNN Money reported that handgun sales are hot, and that, “The market is driven by a growing interest in self-defense and concerns about tighter gun restrictions.”
The report, picked up by several news agencies including WLTZ, said the top two companies for sales lately appear to be Smith & Wesson and Colt. S&W’s sales are reportedly up “by more than 30 percent” and Colt “sold 12 times as many handguns in the first five months of 2014 than it did in all of last year.” |

The National Rifle Association is distancing itself from an article on its website that called demonstrations by gun rights advocates who brandished weapons in public “scary” and “weird,” and that said such advocates had “crossed the line from enthusiasm to downright foolishness.”
The article and the subsequent denunciations in the past week are an unusual public disagreement inside the N.R.A. about the tactics of protesters, particularly in Texas, who have shown up with shotguns and rifles in parking lots and inside stores and restaurants to assert their right to openly carry firearms. |

It's rare that I agree with National Rifle Association officials about anything. Recently, though, they rightly sent a message to gun owners in legal open-carry areas, suggesting that what is (and, in their view, should be) legal is not always appropriate. In particular, groups of people "toting a variety of tactical long guns" to fast-food restaurants and similar establishments might be, at best, demonstrating poor manners. |

Killings show access to guns still too loose
The recent tragedy in Isla Vista occurred across the street from where my daughter lived for two years while attending UCSB and, for me, was the last straw. Some of my dearest friends own guns. They happen to be very responsible people, and I wouldn't want to deny them the right to own guns for hunting or self-defense, but something has to change. |

Local open carry groups fired back at the NRA on Tuesday after the nation’s largest gun-rights group chastised them for headline-generating demonstrations geared to promote their quest to openly carry sidearms legally.
Many members denounced the group and posted photos on Facebook of torn up NRA cards, which they plan to send back to the organization.
“It is unfortunate that an organization that claims to be dedicated to the preservation of gun rights would attack another organization fighting so hard for those rights in Texas,” according to an Open Carry Texas statement. |

There is growing concern that law-abiding gun owning Americans are under attack by every level of government.
In our public schools, children are taught under Common Core that guns are evil and the Second Amendment is invalid. Joe Wolverton II, J.D. in The New American reports, “In a textbook approved by Common Core for use by students studying for the Advanced Placement (AP) history exam, the Second Amendment is defined this way: “The Second Amendment: The people have the right to keep and bear arms in a state militia.” |

Support appears to be growing in Congress to strengthen laws designed to keep guns out of the hands of the seriously mentally ill following the latest mass shooting in Santa Barbara, Calif. Still, hurdles remain that leave final passage of meaningful legislation this year in flux.
The shooting and stabbing in California in late May has renewed calls for stricter gun regulations, even drawing support from ardent supporters of the Second Amendment. The incident in Santa Barbara is among the latest mass-killings, following similar violence at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 and the Virginia Tech massacre five years earlier, where mental illness was believed to play a role in the shootings. |

On May 30th, in a 1400+ word essay, an unnamed NRA-ILA writer ignited a firestorm against Second Amendment supporters in the opposition media.
In a few badly chosen words near the end of the essay, the unnamed staffer gave the opposition priceless ammunition to smear open carriers.
This should be a lesson to everyone to choose their words carefully. I do not know if editorial control was exercised. It is clear that the word choices were emotionally loaded and welcomed by those who desire a disarmed population.
In other words, the unnamed writer pulled a Zumbo. |

Every time this happens Wayne La Pierre and his ilk drum up the band wagon with their "they're going to take away our guns", and many gun lovers gullibly buy into their rhetoric and buy guns like there is no tomorrow. Of course there is a tomorrow for the gun buyers just not their victims. No one is asking to take away guns from responsible people. We need regulations that protect everyone, gun owners and non-gun owners alike, from madmen and from the incompetent . That people make huge sums of money through gun sales as a result of these horrific crimes is ... words fail me. |

On The Colbert Report last night, Stephen Colbert defended gun owners against the newest lobbying group to target them — the National Rifle Association.
“There’s no bigger defender of the Second Amendment than old facey-face right here,” Colbert began, pointing at his face. “I’ve always said that the best defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy hoarding guns in a backwoods shed muttering to himself about the coming race war — which is why I support the ‘open carry’ movement, where patriots stand up for the Second Amendment by proudly displaying their guns in public places.” |
