The federal government doesn’t have a monopoly on unconstitutionally infringing on the rights of the people to keep and bear arms, and one West Coast county is prepared to defend that right against all enemies — federal and state.

On June 2, the county commission of Lane County, Oregon, voted 4-1 “that local government could not afford to investigate violations of the new law, and affirmed the ‘right of the people to keep and bear arms’ under the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment,” Reuters reported June 4.

Anyone who knows me understands the reason I own firearms is to hunt. I own a couple pistols but they are a legacy of my grandfather’s career as a federal marshal. The recent use of lethal force by Utahns, such as the killing of a carjacker and a drunk breaking into a house, made me think it was time to better understand the rules associated with using a gun for self-defense. In the region we live, the easiest way to gain this insight is to take a course to get a concealed weapon permit.

Another measure pitched overboard was an expansion of gun rights that passed the House on a 73-25 vote. It would allow parents to teach gun safety to minors with no age restriction, create a restricted access database for verification of permits, legalize suppressors for Iowa gun owners and make permits valid for five years. Senate Democrats passed a scaled-back measure that only legalized firearms suppressors.

“The Iowa Senate refused to advance the Second Amendment rights of Iowans,” Rep. Matt Windschitl, R-Missouri Valley, said.

A new provision added to gun legislation under consideration at the General Assembly would allow state legislators and legislative employees with concealed handgun permits to carry their weapons around the state legislative complex, including on the floors of the House and Senate.

But General Assembly Police Chief Jeff Weaver, whose force is responsible for maintaining safety throughout the complex, said Thursday morning that he didn’t want to comment on the provision because he hadn’t talked to the gun bill’s main sponsors about it. He said he’d rather address the issue with legislators rather than through the media.

Sometimes it takes a difficult situation to let you know who your true friends are. At least, that’s the case for Steffon Josey-Davis, a 24-year-old New Jersey resident whose life was turned upside down almost two years ago after police stopped him for expired registration tags and learned he had a loaded gun in his glovebox.

Josey-Davis, who is waiting on a pardon from Gov. Chris Christie for what he calls a mistake, was charged with second-degree felony, put on probation and fined for possessing the loaded 9mm Smith & Wesson. The weapon was purchased legally through the armored truck company he worked for, but his carry permit was pending.

Detectives with the Fresno police department are investigating what they are calling a home invasion shooting that left the suspect dead.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. at the Stonegate Apartments on Blythe and Ashlan in northwest Fresno.

Police said, according to the man living in the apartment, a man he didn't know walked into his apartment, where the door was unlocked but closed.

As detectives investigate exactly what happened, Lt. Mike Doyle with the Fresno Police Department said they are not ready to call it self-defense. He said no one else was in the apartment at the time.

When movie star and comedian Vince Vaughn says he’s pro-gun, he isn’t joking. In fact, he’s got to be the most pro-gun actor in Hollywood.

The star of Wedding Crashers and HBO’s True Detective, with both guns blazing, in a British GQ interview said a few interesting things.

Your NRA-ILA has learned that the Delaware Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hear Senate Bill 83 next Wednesday, June 10, 2015.

SB 83 would violate the due process of Delaware citizens. SB 83 would exceed current Delaware and federal law, and would allow abuse orders, which can be issued ex parte, to be issued without evidence that a person committed any actual act of harm against a person, or that the person has even been charged with any criminal act.

In what surely comes as no surprise to gun owners, there is a Democrat member of Congress who wants to further infringe on the right to keep and bear arms by forcing gun owners to purchase liability insurance.

As reported by The Hill, Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) has introduced a bill, H.R. 2546, that would “require gun buyers to have liability insurance coverage before being allowed to purchase a weapon, and would impose a fine of $10,000 if an owner is found not to have it. Service members and law enforcement officers, however, would be exempt from the requirement.”

As the legislative session nears an end, those who wish to infringe upon your rights turn to increasingly desperate measures to push their misguided agenda.

Senate Bill 650 went before the senate on Tuesday night, but thanks to your earlier efforts, it was set aside without a vote. Its defeat is not a foregone conclusion. SB 650, in its current form, allows the applicant of an ex parte temporary restraining order to indicate whether the respondent is in possession of any firearms or ammunition or holds a state issued firearms permit or ammunition certificate and to have a sworn police officer serve the order.

From a political standpoint, advocating more federal gun control is about as popular with voters these days as a skunk in a party punchbowl and any member of congress seeking re-election runs from the issue.

That’s because new public opinion surveys have shown a remarkable change in voter attitudes concerning firearms.

For the first time since the 1970s, a significant majority opposes additional federal gun laws.

In a time when ammunition shortages, real or imagined, are the norm, it’s comforting to see emerging companies jump into the fray to meet consumer demand. When a small company’s product meets or exceeds the standard set by a well-established manufacturer, virtually all shooters benefit, as the bar is raised for ammo performance.

Todd Frankel is one of the Washington Post reporters covering Second Amendment issues, and is a nice enough guy to chat with over the phone.

Unfortunately, Mr. Frankel suffers from the same delusions about how the public perceives the struggle between gun rights supporters and gun prohibitionists as do many inside the Beltway, the media in general, and in gun control groups themselves.

That was painfully evident in his newest contribution to the Post Wonkblog, “Support for gun control isn’t dead, new poll shows. It just matters how you frame the question.”

Pro-gun Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is proving he’s a straight shooter once again, vowing to sign the “campus carry” bill passed by his state’s lawmakers to make it easier for college and university students to defend themselves.

Senate Bill 11 passed in the Texas House of Representatives with overwhelming support, though some opposed it as not going far enough because it will not extend campus carry rights to students of private universities.

As was the case over 200 years ago, the 2nd Amendment IS homeland security. The armed, law-abiding citizen is our first line of defense. The Right to Keep and Bear Arms is as important today as it was then, if not more so, but talking facts to gun control zealots is only likely to make them angry. Much of what they claim simply will not stand up under scrutiny.

The 2nd Amendment isn’t really about guns - it’s about our inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Many who don’t even own a gun understand this and completely support the Constitution of the United States of America.

Silvester v. Harris is a federal civil rights lawsuit that challenges the State of California’s 10-day waiting period laws (“WPL”) as unconstitutional under the Second and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution. (Because the Court found the WPL to violate Second Amendment rights, it declined to rule on the Fourteenth Amendment claims.) The plaintiffs in the case are gun rights groups The Calguns Foundation and Second Amendment Foundation, and individuals Jeffrey Silvester and Brandon Combs. The defendant is California Attorney General Kamala Harris.

that requirement, allowing the stores selling firearms to do the background check instead.

Reid believes that change could put people at risk by removing local law enforcement's knowledge of a problem.

"Identified gang members that have not been convicted of a crime that would keep them from getting a purchase permit,” Reid said. “But our officers know who they are and that they're a threat to society."

In North Carolina, a sheriff can reject a gun permit based on moral grounds.

t’s become increasingly clear that we shouldn’t trust President Obama’s friends at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Earlier this year, the ATF proposed a rule that would have banned commonly used rifle ammunition. In an attempt to scare the American public, the ATF claimed that “armor piercing (AP)” ammunition was being used to kill police officers and should be banned. In reality, the specific ammo in question—M855 5.56x45mm NATO—is just an average sporting rifle cartridge used by sportsmen, hobbyists, and firearm enthusiasts alike. It turned out that the ATF had no basis for its cop-killing claims.

It was a British philosopher, Thomas Hobbes, who theorized during the 17th century about what he called the “state of nature,” a world without government. Hobbs wrote: “In such condition, there is no place for industry; because the fruit thereof is uncertain: and consequently no culture of the earth … no arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short.”

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of men and women. — Thomas Paine, The Crisis, Intro. (Dec. 1776).
