Bears are no laughing matter, especially whenever one is actively gnawing on your lower giblet region. However, if you intend to pursue outdoor recreation or gainful outdoors employment in regions where Ursus conducts business — a large and growing percentage of our country — you have to acknowledge the fact you are sharing space with a mammal who scoffs at the idea of humans being at the top of the food chain. This is why “bear defense,” especially involving firearms, is such a staple topic of conversation among those who venture outdoors on a regular basis.

The title of Stephen P. Halbrook’s new book, ‘The Right To Bear Arms‘, is the very question at issue in the case of New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Corlett, which the United States Supreme Court recently decided it would hear in its next term. The timing and importance of both the book and this case couldn’t have been better!

Montgomery County is facing a lawsuit that says the Ghost Gun law passed in April goes against Maryland state law. Ghost guns are categorized as firearms that are made at home using a 3-D printer or a kit you can buy online, making them essentially untraceable. The Montgomery County law says residents of the county cannot manufacture, possess, sell, or transfer ghost guns to minors, nor can they manufacture, posses, sell, or transfer them within 100 yards of a public assembly.

Oregon Governor Kate Brown is the epitome of a progressive by actively imposing legislation that she and colleagues deem looks good on paper, but in reality, is an absolute train wreck in costing tax paying law-abiding citizens billions in undoing the damage. It’s like a bad rendition of “Lord of The Flies”, as individuals marooned on their own island of discontent, lack the necessary skills and capabilities to build a simple shelter, and hunt or fish for food. For this ilk of idealists, Darwinism is both a conundrum, and an inherent danger. In all probability, Brown has never touched a firearm in her life.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is expected to sign the Firearm Carry Act of 2021 (House Bill 1927) into law. Texas will join several other states that have enacted or plan to enact similar permitless, “constitutional carry” statutes in support of the individual right to keep and bear arms under the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The act, which will go into effect on September 1, 2021, allows individuals 21 years of age and older to possess and carry a handgun in public without a government-issued permit or license, provided they are not otherwise prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law. |

The Louisiana legislature passed SB 118 with veto-proof majorities. The House sent the bill, with amendments to the Senate, after voting for it 73 to 27 on 27 May 2021. Constitutional Carry is a reasonable facsimile of the state of law when the Second Amendment was ratified in 1791. At that time, no state, nor the federal government required any governmental permission to carry arms openly or concealed. |

A federal judge has overturned California’s three-decade-old ban on assault weapons, ruling that it violates the constitutional right to bear arms. U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez of San Diego ruled Friday that the state’s definition of illegal military-style rifles unlawfully deprives law-abiding Californians of weapons commonly allowed in most other states.
