The spurt in terror attacks, including the recent two in England, are pushing gun sales into record territory just months after predictions that the election of a pro-gun president would end the rush. The FBI just reported that the number of gun sales background checks for May was the highest ever for that month, 1,942,677, a trend that will make 2017 the first or second highest year for gun sales. |

The June 3 London terror attacks reminded a watching world of numerous important lessons, among them the fact that a man with a knife is king in world where guns are prohibited. As the world the watched–outraged at the brutality of the attackers and emotionally devastated by the pain of the families who lost innocents–we also saw that attack survivors were forced to defend their lives by throwing bar stools and “pint glasses.”

A recently introduced bill would make it less complicated for people to defend themselves with a gun or other weapon, but it wouldn’t give someone latitude to shoot because of an attack outside of their home. Jim Irvine, president of the board of the Buckeye Firearms Association, supports House Bill 228, introduced in the Ohio House of Representatives on May 16, because individuals under deadly attack have enough to worry about. They shouldn’t be second-guessed later as to whether they might have been able to avoid using deadly force against an attacker by retreating, he said.

President Donald Trump’s media critics have found yet another reason to attack him, this time about his sarcastic tweet following the weekend terror attack in London: “Do you notice we are not having a gun debate right now? That’s because they used knives and a truck!” Trump’s observation was not as off the mark as writers at Salon or the Globe and Mail would have their readers believe. Indeed, considering the bias about guns that seems to pervade the press, he may have been spot-on.

“Do it for the children.” It’s one of the most heart-wrenching pleas of our time. After all, we all love our children and want to protect them. That’s likely why the anti-gun “mainstream” media is so willing to deceive their readers, viewers and listeners when it comes to endorsing the passage of more restrictive gun laws. And we’ve recently witnessed again how the media are willing to push off lies, half-truths and bait-and-switch reporting as fact to make guns and gun owners look bad. |

A year ago, Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives staged a sit-in demanding a vote on federal gun-safety bills following the shootings at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. The National Rifle Association’s lobbying was largely blamed for no vote happening. But looking deeper, the Second Amendment with the unique American individualism wrapped around it underlies all. It is America’s fundamental gun problem. |

A tip about a felon and firearms led to the seizure of nine long guns, two pistols and about 15,000 rounds of ammunition, as well as the arrest of a Chippewa Township man. U.S. states with tighter restrictions on the purchase and use of guns and ammunitions may have fewer fatal police shootings than places with more permissive firearm policies, a recent study suggests. The U.S. has more citizen-owned firearms than any other country in the world, but also some of the most relaxed gun laws, researchers note in the American Journal of Public Health. |

Here’s one thing you’ve got to hand to the modern American Right: These people can sell. Maybe it’s the presence of so many shameless TV preachers and corporate bosses within their movement. Maybe it’s the “message discipline” that comes more easily with being a mostly top-down movement. But whatever the root cause, there’s no denying that conservatives are often much better at packaging their ideas for public consumption than progressives. |

Gabby Giffords’ gun control is ramping up their misinformation campaign in hopes of derailing permitless carry as it goes to a full House vote in North Carolina. If North Carolina adopts permitless carry, it will be the 13th state to do so. The other 12 are Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Vermont, Wyoming, and West Virginia. Additionally, Arkansas and Montana recognize permitless carry in the vast majority of their states. |

Deb Russo-Blakeman has spent time in hunting blinds before, but taking a shot at a deer? Well, that just hasn’t happened. She says she’d always tell herself, or anyone she was hunting with, “Tomorrow. I’ll take a shot tomorrow.” But she never did. It wasn’t that she was squeamish about shooting a deer; after all, she has shot ducks before. It’s just that she always saw the prospect of shooting a deer with a rifle as more challenging than using a shotgun on waterfowl. “And I just didn’t have the confidence,” said Russo-Blakeman, who lives on the outskirts of Austin, Texas. |

Last week, we asked readers what they thought of a bill in the Legislature that would allow some gun holders to bring weapons on to Wisconsin school properties and would remove the state's current requirements for training and a permit to carry concealed weapons. (We think it's a bad idea, as we said in an editorial, but there are strong advocates for the measure.) |

Selecting the best defensive handgun can be a difficult task, especially for those who are new to the whole business. The major problem is the fact that there are so many good handguns available today for personal defense. And that is coupled with the fact that so many firearms instructors and gun experts are quick to tell you that their choice is the best, and that only a fool would look elsewhere. The real problem is that finding the perfect defensive handgun is a very subjective search. |
