"Our Second Amendment grants us the right to keep and bear arms. But two centuries after it was put into our Bill of Rights, the United Nations declares that this civil liberty is a cause of the world’s violence."

"It claims jurisdiction over sovereign American citizens by crafting a global treaty that calls us to surrender our firearms freedom and accept whatever lesser standard of freedom, if any, the U.N. deems appropriate." ...

"The global gun-ban treaty is a ticking time bomb just a pen stroke away from U.N. gun laws being enforced in the United States. Any anti-gun president could call the U.N. document an 'agreement' instead of a 'treaty' and bypass needing two-thirds of the U.S. Senate for ratification. ..." ...

"The National Shooting Sports Foundation, always one to put a smiley face on news from the American firearms industry, notes that 2005 U.S. Department of the Treasury figures show increases in retail sales of firearms and ammunition (2.6 percent) and total volume of sales ($2.1 billion)."

"You've undoubtedly heard that the firearms industry is in trouble; now these figures. Who to believe?"

"Well, the industry is staggering, largely due to the cost of labor and the skyrocketing price of raw materials. It is staying afloat, however, by marketing products - particularly firearms - made off-shore. A total of 1,845,366 firearms were imported for retail last year compared to 2,947,008 made on these shores." ...

"Two northeastern lawmakers joined a small group of law enforcement administrators on Capitol Hill Tuesday to reintroduce legislation they argue will reduce the illegal flow of guns to criminals. ..."

"Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said the bill he is reintroducing is intended to address the 'scourge of gun trafficking in our country.'"

"'This legislation will actually create a new federal crime of gun trafficking, make it a federal crime and give federal authorities the power, which they need, to go after gun traffickers,' King explained. 'It would also make it a new crime for criminals to use stolen firearms [or those] which have [obliterated] serial numbers.'" ...

A dozen guns are off the streets and in the hands of Rochester police thanks to a new gun drop off program.

The RPD showed off the haul Tuesday. 12 guns, big and small, were collected between 6 area churches over the weekend. The program was launched by the new chief of police, David Moore. It's the city's first "no questions asked" program since 1999.

Though the guns were turned in anonymously, they will be tested to determine if they have been used in any unsolved crimes.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all — security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again. — EDWARD GIBBON [On ancient Athens]
