The University of Michigan can ban guns on its campuses, the state appeals court said, rejecting arguments that the school is stepping on turf controlled by the Legislature. In a 2-1 decision, the court said a 2001 ban doesnt violate the U.S. Constitution. The court also said the university isnt covered by a state law that prevents local governments from putting limits on guns.

One of the more unpleasant instances of media bias in recent memory was the release of Katie Courics documentary called Under the Gun. The sham of a show which claimed to be an examination of guns and violence in the United States was quickly revealed to be a partisan hit job which was fraudulently edited to make supporters of the Second Amendment look incompetent. Answers to pertinent questions were left on the cutting room floor and replaced by a clip of members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) staring silently at the camera as if they had no answers.

No charges will be filed against a man who shot and killed his mothers ex-husband in an apparent effort to protect her, the 4th Judicial District Attorneys Office said Tuesday.

Joseph Lamoureux II, 36, was killed March 17 in a home in the 2300 block of Lexington Village Lane, an act of self-defense, the District Attorneys Office reported.

The shooter was Lamoureuxs former stepson, whom the agency has not identified.

It would no longer be necessary to have a concealed handgun permit to bring a gun anywhere that firearms can already be carried openly, under a bill a divided state House tentatively approved on Wednesday.

The change would eliminate the need for concealed-carry permits for adults who are at least 18 and are not otherwise prohibited from owning firearms, except where open-carry is barred. That would change current law that requires concealed-carry applicants be at least 21 and complete firearm safety training to obtain a permit.

Two kidnappers in India grabbed a 21-year-old Delhi University student who was driving a taxiand inadvertently messed with the wrong woman, reports India.com. "I just took my gun and shot them," says Ayisha Falaq, 32, the man's sister-in-law and a competitive sharpshooter. "I shot one in his leg, the other in the waist." It all started when the kidnappers beat the man for not having more money on him, and they called his brother at 1am demanding 25,000 rupees or "we will kill him." Little did they know that the young man's older brother was a competitive marksmanand that his wife had taken up shooting after the birth of their second child. In 2015, she'd won a bronze medal at a national shooting competition.

Paul D. Clement, a former U.S. solicitor general and one of the countrys foremost litigators, is working once again with the National Rifle Association in an effort to get the largest gun lobby to write an amicus brief in the lawsuit filed by Sandy Hook families.

The conservative-leaning Clement, whos been a go-to attorney for the NRA on Second Amendment issues, is looking to represent the association as an amicus curiae in the lawsuit pitting several families of Sandy Hook victims against two gun manufacturers. The NRAs request to file an amicus brief is pending before the Connecticut Supreme Court.

Its another sign of the growing tribalism in the United States: Seattle City Councilwoman Kshama Sawant drew cheers when she told a City Council meeting that she didnt have any Republican friends. Im old enough to remember when the cosmopolitan elites in our cities considered themselves so much better than provincial, small-town Americans because they were exposed to so much more diversity. Now, according to Seattle Times columnist Danny Westneat, Republicans are likely the fourth biggest party in Seattle behind Democrats, the Social Alternative Party and the Peoples Party. Diversity comes with a distinctly blue tint in Seattle, and most other big cities across the country.

Gun-control advocates want to yell from the rooftops the shocking number: 30,000-plus deaths by firearms each year in America. Why doesn't anyone mention that about two-thirds are suicides? Then subtract how many deaths are a result of drug/gang/criminal activity with illegally obtained guns. We end up with a much less-compelling number to be used in their propaganda.

Consider these numbers: In 2016, more than 40,000 deaths were from motor-vehicle accidents, and more than 50,000 deaths were from drug overdoses.

A mother fatally shot an intruder who was trying to break into her apartment on the citys east side Wednesday afternoon, Fox59 reported.

The shooting occurred around 1:10 p.m. in the 2800 block of White Knight Boulevard near East 30th Street and Mitthoeffer Road.

Police say the mother heard someone breaking into her apartment. That woman then came face to face with the armed suspect before she opened fire.

Cash Freeman was at home when a 12-year-old girl knocked on his door, desperately asking for help. The child said a man had barged into her home and was holding 3-month-old twins in a bathtub, while he threatened the babies' mother with a knife. The perpetrator, it turned out, was 27-year-old Leland Foster, the estranged father of the twins. The mother, Michelle Sorrells, had also called 911 with the same report as the young girl gave to Freeman.

Freeman did what many people would do when they hear the life of a child is in peril: He grabbed his revolver, ran next door, burst into the home, and saw what was happening. He then shot Freeman twice in the back. The babies have been released from the hospital and are reportedly doing well.

Now that the state has determined it will allow the ban on weapons on college campuses and other public buildings to lapse, some people may be prepared to strap on a weapon and take it with them everywhere they go.

But should they?

Although the House gave initial approval to a bill Wednesday that would allow concealed handguns to be carried without a permit in certain places, the debate continues, with even some Republicans opposed to the measure.

The bill passed on a 65-54 vote, with all of the House Democrats and eight Republicans voting against the legislation, which would no longer require a permit to carry a concealed handgun in locations where it's currently permissible to openly carry a gun.

Diamond Reynolds didnt just watch her boyfriend die at the hands of a police officer. She made sure the world watched, too.

But when her Facebook Live video was played during the officers trial Tuesday, she couldnt bear to watch. She turned her head away and wept.

There was nothing Reynolds could do to save her boyfriend, Philando Castile. As he bled, the officer kept his gun pointed into Castiles car.

In order to better the publics safety and prevent innocent lives from being taken, gun laws must be passed. While some argue that guns are a necessary part of the civil liberties of the United States, they are clearly pernicious.

It is undeniable that guns are used in this country to kill, with a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report showing that 87.5 percent of homicides of people ages of 15-24 were committed by a gun.

On June 6, the VCDL announced that it would appeal Gibneys decision. VCDL president Philip Van Cleave posted a statement to Facebook:

The VCDL Board of Directors, after careful consideration, has decided that the recent ruling dismissing the VCDL case against Katie Couric, et al, CANNOT STAND! The lawsuit has far reaching implications for all Americans. If the media can be allowed to change a persons words to suit the medias own needs or beliefs, then a grievous blow will have been struck against the very core of the freedom that the United States stands for!

NO! We are going to fight this because too much is at stake.

It's baffling when legislators run for office on a platform of limited government and individual liberty and then use their elected office in the Alabama Legislature to defeat legislation that promotes these principles. Legislation supporting school choice and Second Amendment rights suffered this fate this past legislative session. Don't blame the Democrats. Enough Republicans joined them to defeat amendments to the Alabama Accountability Act, and a Republican committee chairman in the Alabama House scuttled constitutional carry.

Some Democrats in the Legislature are calling for a law that would allow authorities to seize the firearms of people who threaten to commit suicide or hurt others.

State Representative Robert Wittenberg (D- Oak Park) sponsored a bill that would allow a judge to issue an extreme risk protection order. The order would have to requested by a family member or a law enforcement official. And it could last no more than a year.
