Strong gun sales continued in May, with FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System data showing nearly 1.3 million background checks were conducted pursuant to firearms sales last month. Moreover, the FBI conducted a total of 3.2 million firearm-related background checks of all types – including checks for NICS exempt firearm permits that allow holders to purchase firearms without an additional background check for the next five years. The number of firearm sales checks represents the second-highest May on record, following only the massive firearm-buying surge experienced in May 2020.

It was no secret President Joe Biden’s nominee to direct the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, David Chipman, supports a ban on commonly-owned semiautomatic firearms like the AR-15 and wants to force current “assault weapons” owners to register their firearms with the federal government through the National Firearms Act or forfeit their guns. After all, Chipman has worked as a paid gun control advocate for both Giffords (formerly Americans for Responsible Solutions and Legal Community Against Violence) and civilian disarmament financier Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

The Thompson submachine gun — better known as the Tommy Gun — has a long, mythical history in both popular culture and reality. Starting in 1962 gun-guys my age watched Sgt. Saunders pack his Tommy Gun all over France every week on the Combat TV series. More recently the movie The Highwaymen shows Kevin Costner as Texas Ranger Frank Hamer buying Thompsons over the counter at a Texas gun store when preparing to hunt down bandits Bonnie and Clyde.

We assume that tomorrow will be much like today. That is how we plan our lives and our politics. If we stop to think about it, we remember that the world surprises us all the time.

This week, history reminded us how governments have hurt us. Consider these events and ask if the police were there to protect honest citizens, or would these citizens have been better off if they could defend themselves?

I hope for peace: that’s why I am armed.

The Second Amendment Foundation today filed a federal lawsuit in Minnesota, challenging that state’s ban on concealed carry by young adults between the ages of 18 and 21, alleging the ban violates the Second and 14th Amendment rights of those citizens. The lawsuit was filed in U.S District Court for the District of Minnesota. The case is known as Worth v. Harrington. Joining SAF are the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, Firearms Policy Coalition and three private citizens in the affected age group.

Loyal AmmoLand News readers are justifiably thrilled by the ruling of U.S. District Judge Roger T. Benitez in Miller v. Bonta. The celebration is warranted – a product of decades of legal scholarship and the successful legal efforts to strike down handgun bans in D.C. and Chicago in the Heller and McDonald cases.

9mm Vs. 10mm: Which Handgun Should You Pack?

It may seem silly to compare the 9mm to the 10mm. Even if your ballistics knowledge is minimal, you probably know the 10mm is more powerful. The best 9mm loads will push a 124-grain bullet to about 1165 fps from a common duty- or similar-sized handgun. That equates to about 374 foot-pounds of energy. The best 10mm handgun loads will drive a 180-grain bullet to around 1250 fps and generate more than 600 foot-pounds of energy. So why bother with the comparison?

As turkey seasons begin to wind down across the country, we always love to take a quick gander at gungenius.com (powered by Gun Broker), to see what the top-selling shotguns were toward seasons' end. Clearly, the correlation between these numbers and the season at hand is far from causal. There are far more shotgun purchasers than there are turkey hunters, and even for those who fall into both camps, the purchase could have been entirely unrelated to mid-season gear tweaks. Not to mention, quite a few of the guns below are wholly unsuited to the pursuit. Nonetheless, it can be fun to speculate. Here are the top shotguns sold in the United States in the month of May, broken down by category.

For full disclosure, there are a few things that need to be stated before we start this first impressions review of the Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Shield Plus. One, I carried a S&W M&P 9 Shield sub-compact for years, it holds a nostalgic place in my heart as my first concealed carry pistol. While I’ve since moved on, there were things I loved about it, namely the reliability. There were also some characteristics that left me wanting more, namely the trigger. But I carried it, and it treated me well. I can’t remember a single misfire in over several thousand rounds of fire. But enough about the old, let’s talk about the new. I’ve put 100 rounds through this new S&W M&P 9 Shield Plus and these are my first impressions.

In a 94 page decision, Judge Roger T. Benitez said California’s ban on AR-style rifles is unconstitutional. Read the judge’s decision yourself since he wrote in language that even a journalist can understand. At best I can summarize a few of my favorite parts.

..for 266,560 homeowners each year, either no firearm was at hand or it was not enough to prevent a violent attack. Are the lives of home invasion victims worth less than the lives of mass shooting victims?

For several years now, European American Armory Corp. (EAA) has worked with Girsan of Turkey to import well-made pistols at affordable prices. Many of the models Girsan offers are based on popular semi-automatics, including the 1911A1 and Beretta 92 platforms, but one series that breaks away from the clone mold is the company’s MC28, which is a polymer-frame, striker-fired model in 9 mm Luger. Originally released in 2014, this pistol draws from a variety of modern defensive pistol influences. I got to work with the optics-ready MC28 last year, and found it to be a reliable, feature-rich pistol and red-dot package that was enjoyable to shoot, even though its cosmetics didn’t gladden my eye as much as some models do.

Introduced in 1980, the 9x21mm IMI was a creation between the Franco Benvenuti agency of Italy and Israel Military Industries (IMI). Many countries, including Italy and most of the European Union, have banned the use of all military ammunition, such as the 9mm Parabellum. In order to circumvent gun control measures, the collaborative effort to create a substitute ammunition was seen as a good resolution and would allow civilians to own and use a powerful cartridge without fear of repercussions.
