A couple of months ago, when I was renewing my California CCW permit, I heard an interesting comment made by one of the folks present. It was something like, “I’d never trust the defense of my life to a revolver.” Wow. Talk about a strong opinion. I didn’t know if he was one of the instructors or a citizen going through the qualification tests for license renewal. I didn’t pursue it for several reasons, but I have spent some time thinking about it in the ensuing weeks.

The two frontrunners for the Republican attorney general nomination say they want to expand gun rights for nonviolent felons. The Wisconsin State Journal reported that former state Rep. Adam Jarchow and Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney both said during a debate in Milwaukee on Tuesday night that gun rights should be restored for people convicted of nonviolent felonies when they re-join society. Jarchow said he’s heard from nonviolent felons who are frustrated they can’t use guns to hunt with their grandchildren. |

Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton faced criticism for investigating Twitter bots instead of guns, following the deadly mass shooting at an elementary school in his state last month. Paxton on Monday announced he would launch an investigation into whether or not Twitter has been falsely reporting the number of bots—automated accounts that can be used to inflate the number of a person's followers or in scams—on its site.

Two new surveys about gun rights versus gun control may be helping more to cloud the issue than bring about some semblance of “compromise legislation” as politicians continue this week negotiating so-called “gun reforms” in the aftermath of high-profile mass shootings in Buffalo, NY and Uvalde, Tex.

Late last week, the House Judiciary Committee rammed through an extreme package of gun control measures on a party-line vote. If this terrible legislation becomes law, tens of millions of law-abiding gun owners would be turned into felons and their lawfully-acquired property would be subject to confiscation by federal agents. Nancy Pelosi plans to bring this to the U.S. House floor for a vote this week.

St. Louis Mayor Tishaura O. Jones on Tuesday called on Congress to ban “weapons of war” and raise the age to purchase assault weapons to ensure her city continues to see a drop in violence. ”We have to get guns off our street. Period. Stop,” Jones told Meet the Press Now. “That still makes a difference in how successful we are in continuing our programs.”

It goes without saying that your firearms should be unloaded before you start cleaning them. I guess this Pasco, WA man didn’t get the memo. Pasco Police responded to the report of a shot fired this past Sunday at about 9 PM. They arrived at an apartment complex and found that a man had a negligent discharge while cleaning a rifle. The round went through the floor and landed in the apartment below him. Luckily, no one was hurt. The owner of the firearm might be facing charges for unlawful discharge of a firearm in the city.

Canik’s SFx Rival actually hit the scene just in time for SHOT Show earlier this year with a need for speed. The gun boasts a 5-inch barrel and aggressive front and rear slide serrations. The gun includes an optics plate built to fit a wide variety of current pistol optics ranging from a Trijicon RMR to the diminutive Sig Romeo3 Max.

Elk are a big deal because they’re a big deer, and thus require big elk calibers. Elk carry enough venison on the hoof to suggest a big cartridge and big bullet. Use enough gun, enough caliber, and enough cartridge and bullet to invite them to dinner. But not so much that you’re afraid to shoot it.

Not every gun owner has the goal of going from a casual shooter to a tactical operator, and that’s fine. As an example, I fall somewhere in between. I take various training courses when time allows and I get to the range as often as I can, but would not consider myself an actual operator. While you probably see many self-proclaimed “operators” on Instagram running around in full MultiCam tactical gear and night vision goggles, there is more to being tactically trained and ready than just gear. Quality gear definitely plays a crucial part, but training and maintaining the right mindset are even more important. |
