"What everyday citizen among us needs an assault weapon any more than he needs a machine gun, flame-thrower, bazooka, or tank?"

The third suspect, Antonio Harris, 18, was killed after being struck in the head, Schwartz said. All three were from Detroit."

"The disguised motivations for drug prohibition and its associated propaganda had now infested their way to the consciousness of most Americans, and those who did not use drugs became afraid that they were a 'scourge' of mankind. Indeed, drug consumption was on the rise, culminating with the indulgent activities of Woodstock, the 'Be-Ins' in San Francisco, music groups like the Grateful Dead, and educators like Timothy Leary who encouraged drug use. The mainstream culture of the U.S. had become exasperated over this issue, wanted something to be done, and was prepared to vote for political candidates who would take action to stem the tide of widespread drug use."

I can perhaps understand why certain individuals in the military, police or other government or security services might need a weapon for personal protection, but what puzzles me is why a teacher needs a gun. Is it enough just to say I like guns and/or I want one, and you are sold a weapon? Is it not also necessary to demonstrate need?

Kevin Alton

Well, Kevin, maybe teachers need to be able to protect themselves from dangerous little thieves and violent criminals to whom you refer in your rather naive and uninformed letter.
